7 Canadian Brands that Celebrities Love
Too often Canadian fashion labels are seen as the underdog, but that just isn’t the case. Designers all over our country are creating stunning women’s clothing pieces that rival some of the fashion world’s most elite designers. Some so much so that they have become go-to style favourites of celebrities and models alike.
Some of the most cutting-edge and celebrity favourite brands were born and bred right here in the Great White North. From brands like Joe Fresh and Aritzia to more luxurious contenders like Erdem and Jason Wu, Canada’s fashion industry is thriving and taking over A-listers’ closets. We’re talking everyone from Kate Middleton to Karlie Kloss to Michelle Obama and even Beyoncé. Here are a few Canadian fashion labels celebrities all over the world love.
Erdem Moralioglu, the Montreal-raised designer now based in London, is renowned for his creative floral patterns and edgy Victorian-era silhouettes. He works to create romantic, feminine pieces with a hint of attitude and his well-cut dresses and swing coats are easily spotted on red carpets across the globe. The brand has been seen on celebrities such as Keira Knightley, Ashley Olsen, Claudia Schiffer and Lena Dunham.
With a wide variety of in-house brands under its umbrella, Aritzia’s separates and dresses have become a major hit among A-list celebs. The Babaton, Wilfred and Talula brands have most recently been spotted on celebrities such as Meghan Markle, Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Taylor Swift and Kate Bosworth. It’s safe to assume Americans love Aritzia just as much as your average Canuck.
Raised in Toronto but designed in New York City, the Tanya Taylor brand embodies youthful spirit with its artful use of colour, bold prints and simple feminine shapes. Her garments are sophisticated yet fun, and have recently been spotted on a slew of stars including Reese Witherspoon, Lena Dunham, Cobie Smulders, Tracee Ellis Ross, Michelle Obama and Beyoncé.
Started by Christie Smythe and Andrea Lenczner back in 2004, the Smythe brand created staple wardrobe pieces that are a worthy investment for any woman — celebrity or not. The company has a strong focus on beautifully tailored blouses, blazers and jackets, and has been seen on celebs such as Gigi Hadid, Blake Lively, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson. However, the brand’s number one fan is none other than the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton who wore her first Smythe coat when she came to Canada in 2011.
Joe Fresh isn’t just for those of us who like the convenience of affordable, quality clothing while stumbling through a Loblaws or Real Canadian Superstore. The brand has recently launched stores across the United States and has quickly gained a number of high profile followers such as Solange, Molly Sims, Nikki Reed and celebrity fashion correspondent Louise Roe.
Jason Wu is now American based, but the fashion designer was born and raised in Vancouver where he first started his fashion line. Wu most notably went mainstream amongst celebrities when Michelle Obama wore that dreamy cream-coloured dress to Barack Obama’s first inaugural ball after winning the presidency in 2009. Since then, Wu’s designs have been seen on multiple celebrities including Diane Kruger, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. From models and actresses to the former First Lady, it’s clear the brand is a major style favourite around A-listers.
Whether you knew it or not, Pink Tartan actually started in Toronto in 2002 and creator Kimberley Newport-Mimran has been providing effortless simplicity to its garments ever since. Over time the brand has garnered a following by celebrities like Jenny McCarthy, fashion icon Kim Cattrall, Maggie Gyllenhaal and others. Clearly whatever Pink Tartan has been doing when it comes to fashion has been working as more and more celebs are repeatedly caught in the brand at red carpet events.
