The Beginner's Guide to Getting a Bikini Wax

Most women will admit that when it comes to wearing bikinis, one of the biggest regrets made is forgetting to shave down there. There’s nothing more horrific than looking down to realize you have a few stray hairs poking out the sides of your bikini bottoms and worrying that someone will catch a glimpse.

While shaving is a great solution, the bikini wax is one of the oldest tricks in the books – and there are so many different kinds that you can get these days, which means you can get whichever one suits your style.

If you’re someone like me who’s never braved the bikini wax, and have heard many a horror story from friends, we talked to expert and founder of WAXON Waxbar, Lexi Miles, for all the do’s and don’ts for staying smooth this summer.

Are there any common mistakes people make before getting a bikini or leg wax?

Absolutely! The two most common mistakes we see are over trimming (for below the belt services) and not exfoliating for leg services. Ensuring hair is being prepped for removal is essential to achieve a flawless waxing experience.

When it comes to first time waxing, the scene where Steve Carell gets his chest waxed in 40 Year Old Virgin instantly comes to mind – is there anything a first timer can do to prepare for a wax or ease the pain? Especially more sensitive areas like the bikini.

While the movie was very funny, this does not represent the reality of waxing, especially not at WAXON. If you’re nervous for your first wax, there are a few things you can do to reduce pain. The first is to always go to a certified waxologist – at WAXON our waxologists are trained in waxing techniques to reduce pain. We also use our exclusive gold hard wax for all below the belt services. We created this wax with sensitive areas in mind and it’s made with mica and titanium dioxide so the wax adheres to your hair and not your skin!

Usually, painful waxing experiences are the result of an inexperienced, untrained waxer or low quality wax.  With that being said, if you find waxing especially painful, you can also take a mild painkiller 30 minutes before your service, or use BareEase numbing cream, which helps take the ouch factor away (available at all WAXON locations).

At WAXON you offer 7 different below the belt services – is there one that’s more popular than the others? And have you noticed different trends in the time that you’ve been open?

Our most popular service continues to the be our Braziliant – all the hair below the belt is removed, including between the cheeks. We always hear different below the belt “trends” in the media, but our Braziliant has always been by far the most popular!

Now let’s talk aftercare! Does it exist? Are there any special instructions or lotions you suggest to keep your bikini area looking fresh?

Aftercare is SUPER important! After every WAXON service we apply Prince Reigns ingrown hair serum, we also recommend clients continue to apply Prince Reigns everyday following their wax. This stuff is magic and keeps ingrowns away! We also recommend exfoliating using our On the Rocks body scrub and keeping your skin super hydrating with our BodyShot or Body Cocktail. Hydrated, exfoliated skin makes for the most flawless waxing experience!

Are clients able to get waxed during “that time of the month”?

At WAXON, yes! Ensure you wear a tampon (tuck the string in) and let your waxologist know. Depending on where you are in your cycle, you may be more prone to pain. Taking a mild painkiller or using our BareEase numbing cream 30 minutes prior to your service can reduce pain.

How long should your hair down there be before you go in for another wax?

Ideally, a little longer than the length of a grain of rice. If your hair is longer, no problem. Remember, over trimming can lead to the wax not properly adhering to your hair and the hair not being removed completely from the root. Always better too long than too short!

Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid ingrown hairs?

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! And, get professionally waxed every 5 weeks. You want your hair to be on a consistent growth cycle, this will reduce the pull during waxing and therefore reduce the amount of ingrown hairs post waxing. Ingrown hairs can also be reduced by the miracle serum mentioned above – Prince Reigns, use everyday for best use!
