Some of us are born cooks, while others are honed into the finest takeout gurus your eyes ever did see. Now if you fall into the latter bucket and want to shake things up in your life – perhaps you’ve met someone new and want to up your frozen dinner game, or you’re realizing how much money takeout’s costing you over the years – whatever the reason for the change, know that we are here to provide you with support. You can do it. We believe in you, but if you need some help, here are a few golden tips to save more money by cooking at home:

Purchase a slow cooker

Remember that heavy kitchen contraption your mom bought you Christmas that one year? Take it out, because it is a newbie cooker’s best friend. With so many slow cooker recipes readily available online, you’ll have so many cooking options you won’t even know where to start. And best yet? It is incredibly easy to use and even easier to clean!

Search for Simple Recipes

Websites like Real Simple and Budget Bytes have a great collection of three-ingredient recipes which makes food preparation a breeze. The latter will also save you a few bucks!

Portion out your Meals for the Week

If you find yourself with some extra time on your hands, make several different batches of meals, package them individually and keep them in the freezer. This way you’re not stressing about what to cook for dinner which, most of the time, can lead to the convenience of picking up take out. Check out the Reddit’s Meal Prep Sunday subreddit for inspiration.

Have a Wide Selection of Spices

If you’re not into bland tasting leftovers, mix in some spices like black pepper, sage, oregano or whatever your heart desires and it’ll transform boring leftovers into a tasty (free) delight.
