Like a fine wine, girl’s nights in get better with age. I find, the older I get, the less I care about drinking myself silly with shots at the newest bar and the more I care about catching up with the people I adore, over drinks we actually enjoy. Fortunately for me, I had just that experience (thanks to a #MontesAngel looking over me,) at a Montes Wine tasting party earlier this week.

Our sommelier for the evening, Ashley Ellen Martin, walked us through four different Chilean wines: Montes Twins Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay Viognier, Montes Twins Malbec Carbernet Sauvignon, Montes Alpha Malbec and Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon.

While most of my friends are natural-born winos, I’d definitely consider myself the novice of the group. I can’t tell you which regions have the best whites or which reds have well rounded tannins, but I can tell you that when I find something I like, I stick to it. My favourite of the night was Montes Twins Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay Viognier which was sweet with notes of pineapple, citrus and peach. At $11.90 at the LCBO, it’s quite the steal!

Of the red wines, Montes Twins Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon, only $12.95 at the LCBO, stole the show amongst my friends. They enjoyed the mix of red and black berries, combined with the spicy notes attributed to aged oak.

While Montes Twins won our hearts, Montes Alpha Malbec ($19.95) and Cabernet Sauvignon ($19.95) would not be turned down at our dinner table. Both wines are made with grapes from Montes’ Colchagua Valley vineyard, which are irrigated through their Sustainable Dry Farmed system. The Cabernet Sauvignon is perfect for those who shy from sweet and are enticed by fuller bodied, dry wines, while the Malbec is ideal for summer barbecues as the notes of plum, blueberry, vanilla and coffee perfectly compliment grilled chicken and burgers.

If your friends are anything like my friends, they’ll enjoy a night in like this. Run to the LCBO or have your girlfriends each bring a bottle, and sip the night away! Pair that with an awesome charcuterie board or your favourite take-out and girl gabs because, wine not?
