A couple days ago, Mashable published an article on how image recognition companies are on the rise and how this could eventually lead to “Shazam for shopping” like Apps. While an App where you take a picture of a product and subsequently purchase it may seem like a genius idea, their’s a huge potential downside. If image recognition companies such as Slyce & Pounce were to succeed, it would mean that individualism as we know it would end. While we all have grail items we’ve seen on street style photos that we’d love to buy, the fact that we don’t know necessarily know the designer and if it’s even available anymore is what makes it unique for the owner already in possession. While street style already plays a big role in influencing people’s personal style for better or worse, imagine if you could buy the other persons entire outfit… We’d have little replicas of Nick Wooster & Anna Dello Russo everywhere (which gives me nightmares just thinking about it!) With limited copyright laws already in place on the design side of the industry, the last thing the industry needs is people buying their entire outfits based on Tommy Ton’s latest shots.
