If your wedding day is coming up and you’re looking for something that’s beautiful and out of the ordinary, then & For Love might just be for you. The Toronto designed line was founded in 2012 by Angel Spendlove and Julie Forand and focuses on providing gowns for brides-to-be that aren’t necessarily interested in looking like the typical bride. The line was designed to express the personalities of the downtown girl, the romantic dreamer and the bohemian bride on their special day through gowns that are effortless and elegant, edgy yet romantic and glamourously laid-back.
We got to chat with the creative minds behind & For Love to find out how they started, where they get their inspiration and what makes each gown so special. Check out our interview below.
SD: How was & FOR LOVE started?
& For Love: We both studied design at OCAD University and first worked together in London, England, during a study abroad program that was hosted by Will Alsop. We just clicked. When we got back to school in Toronto, we remained great friends and wanted to keep working together. The name & FOR LOVE is a mash up of our two last names.
SD: What inspired you to do bridal gowns vs. a traditional clothing line?
& For Love: We both love the idea of celebrating love, and there was just something extra-special about a white dress. We actually never discussed doing ready-to-wear- but you never know!
SD: Explain the process that goes behind making each dress.
& For Love: We approach the design of our line first by understanding the context of the environment. Where is the bride going to wear this? And how does she want to feel when wearing our dress? That’s really important to us. Then we start sketching, making inspiration boards, and editing. Julie is inspired by minimalist styles, while Angel likes to play with more layered and complex looks. We then make mock ups of the dresses and edit again. It’s a long process! Absolutely everything is done here in Toronto, from the design to the cutting to the hand beading. We love the final result of Bohemian Love. The dresses can be worn with a little or a lot of styling, and that makes them a unique blend of the both of us.
SD: What inspires the designs of the dresses?
& For Love: We were really inspired by the women that we know, people who are comfortable with who they are and don’t feel the need to be over-the-top on their wedding day. Bohemian Love, our debut collection, was very much a reflection of a free-spirited mood, a 1970’s bohemian wanderer… natural, effortless, with a touch of glam.
SD: Are the dresses custom fitted to each bride?
& For Love: Everything is made to standard dress sizes, and has room for alternations if the bride wishes to do so. Everything has a very relaxed fit so it’s not quite as strict as traditional wedding dresses. We also have lots of styles with sleeves or lace straps, and everything flows with the body.
SD: Do you design the accessories as well?
& For Love: Yes we do! We have beautiful vintage inspired lace bracelets and cuffs, as well as gypsy style headbands and fresh flower crowns made especially for us by our partners at Sweetpea’s.
SD: Which styles are your favourites?
& For Love: Angel’s favourite is either the “Amy” dress, which is total bohemian-glam, or the “Inès”, which is a little more rock’n’roll with hot pink dip-dye at the bottom. Julie loves the “Gwen” dress because it’s so suitable for a beach wedding
