Last night, MTV hosted the 33rd annual VMAs (Video Music Awards) and as always the night was a medley of star-studded performances. While Rihanna was slated to be the main performer throughout the night, the BeyHive ultimately swooped in for 15 breath-taking moments of Bey, just being Bey – sorry Riri, bees make a lot of buzz. Other stage acts included Britney Spears’ somewhat anticlimactic performance and another Kanye awards show “riff”. But let’s be honest, at the end of the day, we’ve probably already forgotten who came out on top and who won what award – all that really matters is what the celebs were wearing. See our best and worst dressed picks below:
While the Queen of pop’s performance may have been anticlimactic, her red carpet look was not. Spears’ Julien Macdonald dress revealed skin in all the right places, leaving just enough to the imagination.
Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson
We might still be on a Rio Olympics high, but Michael Phelps and Nicole Johnson are basically #couplegoals. The lovebirds both sported a paired down look, a refreshing break from so many other try-hard ensembles.
We’ve witnessed a lot of “naked suits” this year – some of them done well, some of them not. Fortunately, Hailey Baldwin’s jumpsuit by Georges Chakra was another one well done, proving that naked can be classy.
Not a women of subtleties, Minaj opted for a more elegant look at the VMAs. Her floor length bodycon gown succeeded in showcasing the assets she’s known for without being too obnoxious.
Model, Taylor Hill, sported a bedazzled gown by Moschino that likely would have looked bad on anyone else. We guess being a Victoria’s Secret model helps… do they ever look bad in anything?
With so many high profile celebs donning the label, we almost feel like it’s not a red carpet event without a Balmain look (who remembers the Kardashian Balmain Army at the Met Gala?). The VMAs was no exception with actress Hailee Steinfeld in this playful mini.
We have to give to Future. With the amount of bling on this ensemble, it easily could have gone in a tacky direction, but the rapper kept it simple with all black accents, ultimately pulling off the look.
Kim Kardashian-West and Kanye West
Kimye was so close to making the “best” list, although we can’t stop staring at the awkward crotch tassel on Kim’s dress. Not too mention, Kanye’s shoes make us wonder if he snowboarded his way onto the red carpet.
There’s SO much going on with this outfit, we don’t even know where to start. We’re just going to sum it up as a heavy metal mishap.
We never thought we’d see Bey make it on to a “worst” list, but even the best stumble sometimes. The dress itself was stunning, but the furry collar resembled something from a Dr. Seuss story.
The rapper’s suit was pretty dapper, except for the fact that he forgot (?) a shirt. Oh well, we’re just happy he didn’t show up dressed as a Panda.
Don’t wear sweats to a red carpet event… just don’t.
Nev Schulman and Laura Perlongo
We’re all for moms-to-be flaunting their baby bumps, but this outfit just looks odd – we’re not sure if the public is quite ready for ‘Baby Bump Bombers” yet.
The Smith kids are known for their risk-taking style, but Jaden’s outfit is a little too eccentric for our taste this time around. Did the seamstress run out of suit fabric? Is his jacket a quilt? So many questions.
