Toronto was Ranked the Most Welcoming City in Canada

It’s no secret that Toronto is one of the most attractive, comfortable and multicultural cities to live in in the world.

With an average of 235,000 newcomers entering the country per year, Canada has gained a reputation as “a land of immigration.” And according to Statistics Canada, four in every 10 new immigrants find their home in the Toronto region.

Recently, Toronto received the title of the most welcoming city in Canada, accepting over 40 million visitors annually, and has been ranked number 14 in the world, according to a new study conducted by TravelBird, a Netherlands-based travel agency.

The study concentrated on such topics as the impact of over-tourism on international cities and their residents. According to TravelBird, over-tourism is a serious issue that is dampening the spirits of local communities and affecting visitor experiences. As attempts to promote thoughtful travel and sustainable tourism, the company polled over 15, 000 travel journalists and industry insiders from 110 countries to support their study and bring awareness to the topic.

They also looked at such factors as: how likely are locals to accommodate tourists in their homes, their English language proficiency, how welcoming their airports and train stations are, and even how happy the residents of the country are. TravelBird analyzed over 500 tourist destinations in the world, polled travel journalists who based their opinion on their personal experience, as well as including local residents’ opinion on how tourism has positively or negatively impacted on their daily lives.

While Toronto ranked in the top 15, it was Singapore that scored the top spot, with Stockholm, Helsinki, San Francisco, and Rotterdam following close behind. To see the full list of the world’s 100 most welcoming cities, you see TravelBird’s findings here.
