This is very interesting. Reports from major outlets are surfacing that Canada’s biggest drugstore chain – Shoppers Drug Mart is looking at the possibility of incorporating the sale of medical marijuana in their overall offering of products.
This would be huge for the medical-marijuana industry as one of Canada’s best-known and well-respected brands enters into the weed game.
According to the Globe and Mail, Shoppers Drug Mart Corp has had numerous meetings with licensed medical marijuana producers across Canada.
A rep from Shoppers Drug Mart is quoted by the Globe and Mail as saying
“We believe that dispensing medical marijuana through pharmacy, like other medications, is the safest option.”… “Pharmacists are medication experts and play a significant role in the prescribing and monitoring of medication to ensure safe and optimal use,” – Globe and Mail
While Shoppers Drug Mart does indeed have the infrastructure to effectively sell Marijuana as a controlled drug, as most Canadians are aware, the federal government is planning on eventually legalizing marijuana for personal recreational use.
With this in mind, many insiders are saying that although Shoppers Drug Mart is touting themselves as a safe option, they really are just looking to corner the market. Having a monopoly in marijuana distribution for any company would be a massive game changer.
We will keep you posted as this story develops.
