6 of the Best Places for Gelato in Toronto

On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than a scoop (or three) of gelato. Ice cream’s less-fatty cousin, gelato is made with a blend of mostly milk, some cream, and sugar. It’s denser, creamier and silkier than ice cream, and served with a spade rather than a scoop. With flavours ranging from the classics like vanilla, pistachio, and bacio, to the adventurous like raspberry chipotle and black sesame, there’s a gelato to suit your taste buds.

Here are 6 of the best places for gelato in Toronto.

1. Kekou Gelato

With two locations (one on Queen Street West and one in Baldwin Village), Kekou serves delicious cold treats, featuring a wide variety of Asian inspired gelato flavours. At their Queen Street location, you’ll also find popsicles, soft serve, teas, bobas and pastries. You can find gelato flavours ranging from black sesame and red bean to green tea and HK milk tea. Or you can opt for a gelato bar, topped with melted chocolate and nuts.

2. Death in Venice Gelato

At Death in Venice, the gelato is made daily, and the flavours are created to wow your taste buds. Stepping away from the traditional, you’ll find flavours like Popcorn and Salted Caramel, Rhubarb and Licorice, and White Chocolate and Hibiscus. They also offer vegan and dairy-free options including Cardamom Rosewater and Lime, and Raspberry Chipotle. Not to mention their extra adventurous combinations like Grilled Cheese and Sourdough, and Nu Bagel and Cream Cheese.

3. Ed’s Real Scoop

Serving gelato-lovers in four different areas (The Beaches, Leslieville, Roncesvalles, and Mimico), Ed’s Real Scoop offers homemade artisanal gelato you’ll love. Their gelato is a blend made with mostly milk and some cream, and they use only the finest ingredients. Think pistachio gelato made with 100% pure pistachio paste and hand-chopped pistachios, and hazelnut gelato made with pure hazelnut paste. On top of gelato, they also serve ice cream, sorbet and fro-yo, so you can try them all!

Whether you prefer a plain, sugar, or waffle cone, or a cup (they offer 3 sizes), you can enjoy your gelato just the way you like.

6. Bar Ape

Bar Ape does gelato differently, offering soft serve, sundaes, bars, and take-home tubs. Their soft serve is served in a cup, and every Wednesday there’s a new soft serve pairing planned around seasonal Ontario fruit. Their gelato sundaes are made with Fior Di Latte (sweet milk) and rotating toppings made from scratch in-house or by other local businesses (think: Kitten and the Bear and Roselle). Plus, they have a mobile gelato truck that serves their handcrafted gelato bars.
