Welcome to StyleDemocracy’s first installment of ‘Store Chatter’, where we bring you gossip* we’re hearing in the world of Canadian retailing. We hear a lot of it, and we’ll share some of the juiciest bits. Our group of knowledgeable industry leaders write and submit tips and info to this monthly segment. Stay tuned for breaking retail news that you’ll hear first through StyleDemocracy.
1) Could Holt Renfrew’s Bloor Street Store be Demolished?
Chatter on the Urban Toronto forum indicates that Holt Renfrew’s flagship store at 50 Bloor Street West could be demolished as part of a major redevelopment proposal. Much of the two blocks bounded by Bloor Street West, Bay Street, Yorkville Avenue and Yonge Street could be redeveloped, with a private competition being held by landlords to determine a winner. Three landlords own much of those two blocks and sources say they’re willing to cooperate.
According to Urban Toronto forum member ‘Josh’, any new development would have to 1) maintain the CIBC office tower at the northwest corner of Yonge and Bloor, and 2) make provision for a Holt Renfrew to be “accommodated somewhere on site”. So the good news is that even if Holt’s current store is demolished for redevelopment, it will build a flashy new store in the immediate area, provided this actually happens, which is of course speculative.
2) Sandro and Maje are Coming to Yorkdale!
Get your credit cards ready, everyone! French fashion brands Sandro and Maje will open their first freestanding Canadian stores in October at Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall! Both will be in the new “Nordstrom wing”, according to a source at Sandro. Sandro will get a corner location, kitty-corner to Canada Goose, which is opening its first store in the world in the mall this fall. Yorkdale’s Sandro store will carry men’s and women’s clothing, while Maje will be just for the ladies.
Sandro and Maje aren’t new to Canada, however. Sandro operates little boutiques inside of Hudson’s Bay stores in Toronto (Queen Street, Yorkdale and Sherway Gardens) and at Hudson’s Bay in Vancouver and Montreal. Maje has boutiques inside of Hudson Bay’s Queen Street, Yorkdale, Vancouver and Montreal stores.
Off-White to Open Toronto Store!
Pricey high-fashion men’s streetwear brand Off-White is planning to open a store in Toronto! This, according to creative director Virgil Abloh, who mentioned his Canadian intentions in an article in WWD.com. There’s no word yet where Off-White will land in Toronto, but it’s likely to go where the money is given the prices on some of the brand’s clothing. With this and other recent luxury announcements, Toronto is enjoying a retail golden age!
