While the weather has had a mind of its own lately, we’ve had a few sunny days that are a glorious reminder of the warmer days to come! Summer’s not really that far off if you think about it, and before you know it you’ll be stripping down to your skivvies and tossing a bathing suit on.
But one thing I don’t understand (just like this random ass weather) is how a teeny, tiny piece of fabric can cost so freakin’ much!!! Like I could buy half a week’s worth of groceries with that kind of doe. Lucky for you, there are some great alternatives, that don’t make you choose between eating and looking like a bronzed beach babe – you can have it all.
Take a look at the best places to buy affordable swimwear below:
Being the OG of fast fashion you can expect to find trendy bathers for cheap at Forever 21. Bottoms start at around $7 and tops and one piece bathing suits start at around $20. They have a whole range of different styles from string, to high neck, to retro, but in my experience, I find stores can be pretty picked over, so consider ordering online. Shipping is free when you spend over $50 so we suggest stocking up on a few styles.

Another great option for affordable swimwear in Toronto is Joe Fresh. Pop-up over to the Joe Fresh department next time your grocery shopping and do a little browsing or head to the flagship on 585 Queen St. West for the best selection. If you’re looking for simpler and more modest styles like tankinis, Joe Fresh is your best bet. Prices start at $19.

Fast fashion giant H&M, also has a ton of affordable swimwear and with their recent introduction of online shopping in Canada, it’s now easier than ever to get the styles you’re looking for. I found in my past experiences, similar to Forever 21, the stores can get picked over real fast. But don’t fret! If you can’t find your size or the style you’re looking for in-stores, use ordering online as a backup. With standard shipping of only $8 we’d still call it a steal.

Ardene may seem like a bit of a teeny-bopper store, but they’ve really stepped up their game in the last several years, adding a much broader offering. If you’re looking for funky prints and bold colours then this is the place. Plus it’s hella cheap – they frequently have BOGO deals on.

While slightly more expensive (bottoms start at around $30), I’d still deem this cheap in comparison to the swimwear priced well over $100 at boutique stores. Aerie has some great bikini and one-piece styles available in a wide range of neutrals, fun colours and prints. And if you’re on a budget, mixing and matching your top and bottom is always in, so opt for buying only one or the other to wear with some of the swimwear you already own.

When shopping for swimwear, Walmart probably isn’t a retailer that comes to mind. However, if you’re looking to replace a simple string bikini you should definitely try here. They don’t have the trendiest or widest selection, but I’ll admit that a couple of my plain string bikinis were purchased at Walmart. I got them several years back and they’re actually still in my current bikini rotation.
