Here’s some great news for Torontonians! A brand new farmer’s market is headed to the city next year and it’s going to be its largest one to date.

The new spot will open on the north of St. Lawrence Market and is expected to be completed by fall 2022.

There is a thought out reason for this development. The North Market building was underutilized before and wasn’t maximizing the potential of the entire St. Lawrence Market complex. This redevelopment will now improve all areas for both vendors and customers.

Not only will you be able to shop for fresh produce and delicious goodies, but there will also be an archeological display that will show historical artifacts of the City of Toronto, as well as courtrooms, and offices.

If you’ve walked past the area, you’ll see that construction on the building has already begun, which is super exciting.

Based on current events and the year we’ve had so far, we can potentially expect some delays, but fingers crossed the farmer’s market opens on time!

Staying home for isolation doesn’t mean you have to eat canned food every night — there are still plenty of local grocery delivery services that will drop food off on your doorstep, including a Toronto farmers market that recently announced it’s going digital!

Kendal Hills Farm just opened a virtual farmers market.

The virtual farmers market features pretty much everything you’d get at your local market, sans the human contact. Online you’ll find meats, vegetables, fruits, eggs, bread, and much more. And while we’ll certainly miss interacting with local makers and farmers, the Kendal Hills Farm platform is a great way to continue supporting them.

The online farmers market is open to shop 24/7.

However, no-contact deliveries are only made three days a week: Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Delivery to West Toronto (west of Bathurst) is on Thursdays, delivery to East GTA (Toronto east of Bathurst, Scarborough, Pickering, and Ajax) is on Fridays, and delivery in Clarington and surrounding area (Whitby, Oshawa, and Bowmanville) is on Sundays.

As the Kendal Hills Farm online farmers market gets settled, shoppers can expect other fun things like live music, children’s activities, and more.

Everyone loves a good farmers market. Farmers market have really reached their pinnacle in the last few years with markets popping up in parks, underused parking lots and alleys all across Ontario.  The reason why they are so popular is that it’s a great place to support local businesses and pick up food that was grown and sourced locally.  Sounds great right?  While for most of us our experience at a farmers market is positive, it turns out that many of us could be getting duped.  It turns out your local vegetable vendor could be giving you the runaround.

CBC’s Marketplace has recently uncovered that there is a seedy underbelly to the farmers market industry where vendors are purposely misleading consumers about the food for sale on their tables.  The article which can be read in full here exposes the fact that many consumers could be paying a premium for products with fake backstories and about where it was grown.

The Marketplace team went undercover to 11 farmers markets across Ontario and discovered that at certain markets different vendors were claiming that their product was fresh and recently picked whereas, in reality, the vendors were purchasing the product from a wholesaler and reselling the good elsewhere. Tsk, tsk.

While technically if they are selling you a tomato you get a tomato, and that’s not the problem. The problem is if you think you are buying a tomato that was grown in your provincial backyard, but really the product could be coming from the U.S.A or Mexico. And if that okay with you, you might as well just go to No Frills and not pay the premium the vendors usually ask for.

Take a look at the video and decide for yourself. While many local vendors are doing the right thing, as consumers we always have to be vigilant especially when buying “premium” products.

Summer farmers markets are a real treat. They give you access to fresh produce, you get to meet the people who actually produce your food, and it’s a great way to support the local economy. If you’re a big fan of farmers markets like us, you’ll be happy to hear that new one will be popping up right in the heart of the city this summer.

Starting June 7th, 2017 – Yorkville Village will be hosting a high-end farmer’s and artisan market showcasing some of the best foods Toronto has to offer. Expect to see local produce, freshly baked bread and treats, artisan cheese, VQA wines and other upscale market goodies.

As this farmer’s market is taking place in Yorkville and the organizers have stated that they will only be offering the highest quality of products to keep in line with the personality of the neighbourhood, this market won’t be cheap.

Regardless of the price, those of you that are interested can check out the market in the outdoor courtyard of Yorkville lanes, at 136 Yorkville Ave. every Wednesday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm from June 7th, until August 30th.

This will be a real delight for people that work in the neighbourhood.
