The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has now arrived! It’s one of our fave sales of the year so we couldn’t be more excited—get ready to shop ‘til you drop
From beauty to purses, to sneakers, and more—it’s Nordstroms biggest shopping event—you’ll definitely be able to snag some brag-worthy deals.
The women’s clothing section had the most selection, so we ended up spending most of our time browsing the racks there. Aside from everyday apparel, there’s also activewear, sleepwear, and intimates. You’ll also find staple sneakers and statement heels which are perfect for the summertime. The men’s section had a ton of super chic button-ups and casual items as well as an array of dress shoes to choose from. We also can’t forget about the kid’s section which had a variety of basics and super adorable pieces.
The beauty section had a handful of makeup kits and perfumes from brand names like Charlotte Tilbury, Dior, Nars, and Le Labo. We actually preferred that most of this section had bundled kits, that way you can try a couple of products at a time, for an awesome price.
We totally think it’s worth it to take a peak at least—a little browse never hurt anybody. It’s a great way to stock up on wardrobe essentials or items you’ve been eyeing while saving some cash along the way.
The entire event ends July 31, with prices going back up on August 1. For even more information on what you can find, click here.

Have you been missing Topshop lately? Well, we have some good news. According to Retail Insider, the British retailer is headed back into Canada.
Ever since then, if Canadians wanted to purchase trendy clothing from the brand, they had to do so through ASOS, which unfortunately has duties.
Now, Topshop is re-entering, but with the help of another major retailer—Nordstrom.
You’ll be able to browse the brand in-person and on Nordstrom.ca starting April 1, plus you won’t have to pay any extra shipping duties anymore!
Retail Insider also states that allegedly Hudson’s Bay and ASOS were unable to come to an agreement to continue carrying Topshop in Canada, so ASOS turned to Nordstrom. Since losing this, Hudson’s Bay partnered with YM Inc. to have Forever 21 as part of their offering.

Listen, we’ve all heard how incredible and amazing Nordstrom is, as the retailer has an incredible return policy and tons of great designer brand selection. But, if you’re like me and on a budget, then maybe Nordstrom Rack is more in your price range. To me, stepping into The Rack was like going out with the more classier and sophisticated sister of Winners. So here’s the deal, as someone who typically wears plus sizes (size 18/20), I wondered if a place like Nordstrom Rack could accommodate larger bodies like mine. I took a visit to the flagship store at Yonge and Bloor to find out the answer.

I have to admit, normally when I take myself out for these Style Tests, I’m not that intimidated but for this one, I was. As I found myself on the escalator, rising up to the second floor where all the women’s pieces were organized on racks by style: jackets, cardigans, formal wear, pants, tops, blouses, dresses, and more — I felt a bead of sweat roll down my face. Did I belong here, and what was this place?
Prior to arriving at the store, I tried to do a little bit of digging to see if there was even a plus-size section. An online community I was a part of said, yes but that it’s quite small.

The largest size that Nordstrom Rack offered was an XXL, which depending on the brand and fabric, can fit a body that is a size 16 or at best, size 20.
I didn’t think this could be right, I mean: Nordstrom has a plus-size section on its website. So I approached a salesperson on the floor to see if my eyes deceived me: “Excuse me, but do you have a plus-size section?” I sheepishly asked.
Well alright then, I guess we’re just going to try and fit my fat body into as many of these XXL’s as possible to see how she does. To say the least, I’m not surprised, but disappointed.

Because this is the off-price retail division of Nordstrom, nearly everything was 30% to 70% off the original price. Since there isn’t a dedicated plus-size section, I pulled six items which included four dresses, one jumper, one skirt, and one shirt. Each of the items could have transferable from day-to-night, which was fantastic and were definitely trendy and hip.

This dress fit perfectly and gave me Little House on the Prairie vibes. The dress had a built-in elastic paneling in the waist, for extra comfort. But it also meant that I could fit into it with ease, and still had room. As soon as I put this on, I fell in love. More of a fall vibe, rather than spring/summer.

I got this dress onto my body, and immediately loved it, but as soon as we got to my boobs, it was an immediate no go. My chest, which is a 42 DD, could not be contained in this. Now if I wanted to go for more of a busty look, maybe. But literally my boobs felt as if they were just hanging out, and I did not feel comfortable at all. Maybe if this came in one size up, we could have remedied this.

When I saw this on the rack, I knew I had to have this on my body. Just look at the colour! I was surprised (and shocked) when it fit, but was a bit worried about the arms, which did feel a bit tight. Now for those that don’t know, I am a short person standing at 5’2 and this dress hit me at my knee cap, which is fine. For you tall folks out there, it might be a bit too short. My favourite part of this look? How it rocked every single one of my curves.

Once again, I saw this on the rack and needed to have it on my body, immediately. So in the change room when I got it on my body, you don’t know how excited I was. But boobs man. It’s like clothing companies don’t think about boobs. There was no way to contain my 42 DD chest from this look, and quite frankly, I’m upset. Do better, Nordstrom Rack. Boobs are a real thing, no matter what size you are.

When I saw this I got vibes of Premme and Modcloth, and it gave me hope. So immediately I picked it up and thought, “This will come home with me!” Wow, was I sorely mistaken? I barely got it down over half of my body. What a mess, it was horrible. I’ll still have visions in my head of what that jumper COULD have been.

Wouldn’t you know: this fits! But also, it looks like something I would wear out into the day-to-day world and I really like it. Everything hugs my body perfectly and I am kind of obsessed with how sparkly I am. The perfect outfit if I had an office to go to.

Okay so let’s be honest: shopping here wasn’t terrible, but it also wasn’t great. Why? Well, I’m lucky that I am a smaller sized fat person, who can fit into XXL’s or in some instances XL’s. But what about people who are trying to shop for office clothes or clothes for special events and don’t?
Some people have said that Nordstrom Rack is kind of like Winner’s so based on returns or other shipments, sizing can (and does) vary. Which is great and all, but why not just carry a dedicated plus-size section? I know me and some other fashionable plus-size babes would shop the hell out of it. Heck, I wanted SO MANY of the items that I tried on, but just couldn’t buy them because they didn’t fit.

Feel blessed because 2018 was a huge year for store openings! Following closely in the footsteps of 2017, international retailers like Muji and Uniqlo continued to expand, while brands like Oomomo and Nordstrom Rack set up shop for the first time.
And while the number of new international retailers may have slowed down, it’s clear that their Canada-wide takeovers haven’t. 2018 was the year of store expansions and off-price retailers, with Japanese dollar stores and Nordstrom Rack ruling the market.

Off-price retailers really had a moment in 2018, including Designer Shoe Warehouse who opened three new stores this year. According to Retail-insider, the company opened one in Edmonton, while the other two stores opened in the GTA bringing DSW’s North American store count up to 27 on March 1st, 2018. The new stores also include 1,500 square feet dedicated to women’s handbags as it grows its accessory business. Watch out! Before you know it, DSW will be your new go-to for off-price accessories too.

Facebook/Toronto Premium Outlets
During the fall of 2018, Aritzia opened its first North American outlet right here in the GTA. The store opening was part of the Toronto Premium Outlet’s much-anticipated expansion, and was joined by other new and exciting outlets like Gucci, Prada, Jimmy Choo, and more.
Nordstrom Rack is essentially Nordstrom’s version of Winners or Marshalls where you can expect to find incredible deals (up to 70% off) on some of the most coveted brands including Theory, Kate Spade, Rebecca Minkoff, Ted Baker and more. With six stores across Canada including the downtown Toronto location, get ready for more! Nordstrom Rack has made it clear they’re not slowing down anytime soon – expect to see up to 15 new stores in the next several years.

While Levi’s may already be one of our favourite denim brands, the retailer just opened their first downtown flagship store at CF Toronto Eaton Centre this summer. Although stores like Urban Outfitters and Aritzia distribute Levi’s, the flagship has several perks. Here, you can find Levi’s Authorized Vintage for the first time in Canada, not to mention tech-supported touch points with call buttons. Shopping has never been made easier.

Instagram/@miniso.canada
Miniso burst into the scene beginning in 2017, and since then has opened countless Canadian stores. The brand even announced their plan to open 500 stores in Canada within three years, with their latest store openings happening this fall in Quebec, Vancouver, and Ontario. While the name Miniso might not spark the same surprise effect, expect to continue seeing news about one of Dollarama’s biggest competitors.
Another one of the biggest international retailers to enter Canada and continue opening stores at an unbelievable rate is none other than Uniqlo. While Torontonians got the first taste of the affordable apparel retailer in 2017, the Japanese lifestyle brand just opened four more stores between the months of September to November of this year. The first store opening took place in BC, while the others graced the GTA area (Vaughan Mills, Markville, and Mississauga)… I think it’s safe to say that Canadians aren’t getting tired of Uniqlo yet.

Queen Street West is renowned for having some of the coolest shops in Canada, including Asics’ first North American stand-alone store. Along with the innovative store being a whopping 4,400 square ft, it also houses two of the Asics family brands: ASICS and ASICSTIGERTM. The first of its kind, the Queen West store introduced Canadians to the new direction of the brand when it opened its doors to the public this past March.

Casper, one of the most innovative sleep companies out there, opened their first “Casper Sleep Shop” at CF Sherway Gardens this past summer. The location no doubt signals the brands initiative to interest premium shoppers meaning the brand will likely continue to expand into more upscale malls. My, my has Casper come far since 2016! They recently opened a Queen St. West location, too.

Apparently, the Japanese dollar store craze can only get crazier. Oomomo is the newest international variety store to enter the Canadian market, however, the main difference being that Oomomo carries the ever-popular brand Daiso. Having two Canadian stores as of now (Edmonton and Toronto), the retailer has plans for a major Canada-wide expansion. Check out our inside look at the Don Mills and Lawrence store here, and get excited.

If you’ve been keeping up with SD news, then you’ll know that OVO’s newest store was a major hit. Opening in Square One Shopping Centre this past November, the store represents the third GTA-installment. If you don’t believe the hype, just check out the crowd that showed up to support our boy Drizzy at the Mississauga store opening. Clearly, OVO still hasn’t lost its status as it continues to grow in North America.
Muji was BIG news in 2017, so it’s no wonder that the brand decided to make another splash in 2018… just in case you forgot. Introducing Muji Atrium, situated across from the Toronto Eaton Centre, the new store is not only the flagship but is also the largest Muji store outside of Asia. Don’t believe us? It’s 19,000 square ft and has special features like a coffee counter, aroma bar, and digital printing service. Muji Atrium is truly impressive.

Nordstrom has just announced opening dates of its next three Canadian off-price Nordstrom Rack stores, as it continues with its national expansion. Apparently, can expect as many as 15 locations over the next several years. This year, Nordstrom Rack opened its first three Canadian stores which are now open at Vaughan Mills, at Deerfoot Meadows in Calgary, and at One Bloor Street East (the Canadian flagship).
The expected date for the Nordstrom Rack opening at Heartland Town Centre in Mississauga is on September 6, 2018. The store will span about 35,000 square feet in a massive centre that includes the new location for the restaurant chain Jollibee.
A month later, on October 11th, Nordstrom Rack will open at The Ottawa Train Yards in Ottawa. “The 750,000 square foot power centre spans 110 acres of property which, when viewed on a map, is shown to be remarkably close to Ottawa’s urban core.”
“On October 25, 2018, Nordstrom Rack will open its Edmonton location at South Edmonton Common in Edmonton, which will become the second Nordstrom Rack location in Alberta”
Nordstrom Rack offers customers a wide selection of on-trend women’s, men’s and kids’ fashion from many of the top brands sold at Nordstrom stores at everyday savings of up to 70% off, including Ted Baker London, Kate Spade New York, Theory, Bobbi Brown and more! Nordstrom Rack will finally have a second location, this time in downtown Toronto. One Bloor will be their largest Nordstrom Rack in Canada with two levels and 38,600 square feet of fashion!
As reported by Nordstrom Rack, “when planning for our Canada openings, we identified new ways to make the shopping experience even more convenient. Our Canada stores will be strategically merchandised by gender and category (e.g., jeans, coats, etc.) to allow customers to more quickly and efficiently find that they’re looking for within specific categories.”
The store opens up on May 3, 2018. Now, if you live in the city you don’t have to trek far to find “deals at a fraction,” the new store will be at the base of the One Bloor building – RIGHT at the heart of Yonge and Bloor. This will certainly be filled with people non-stop, as it’s located in such a populated area with so many residences and businesses.
One Bloor (Toronto) will be their third store to open in Canada, following their second opening at Deerfoot Meadows (Calgary) on April 26. Fall openings include South Edmonton Common (Edmonton), Heartland Town Centre (Mississauga) and The Ottawa Train Yards (Ottawa).
