Our friends at Retail-Insider are reporting that China-based variety retailer MINISO has considerable plans for expansion throughout Canada and especially in Toronto. MINISO, which positions itself as a “Japanese Lifestyle” brand and specializes in value-priced household and consumer goods, has already established itself in Vancouver and is looking to make MINISO a national Canadian brand.

The store’s branding is similar to that of Uniqlo, and MINISO considers itself a competitor to Uniqlo, MUJI and Dollarama.

What’s cool about MINISO is that the store releases new products every 7 days and will provide customers with access to Dollarama priced products in a trendy Japanese retail environment.

Industry insiders speculate that MINISO will target large-scale Canadian cities like Toronto and could potentially disrupt the already crowded value-priced good market which includes stores like Dollarama, Giant Tiger and even Joe Fresh. Furthermore, depending on MINISO’s product selection in the new stores, brands like Canadian Tire could also start to feel the competitive pinch.

We will keep you updated when we get specific store locations and opening dates.
