It’s a given that shopping involves spending money, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be smart about it and save a few dollars along the way! There are plenty of tips and tricks to help you save money while you shop. And in girl math, the money you save is just extra earnings in your pocket! From browser extensions to the best times to shop, consider this your savvy shopping guide.
If you’re new to the world of browser extensions, you’re in for a treat. Honey, for example, is completely free to download, and it automatically searches for coupon codes while you shop. At checkout, you just click the Honey extension, and it does the rest – trying any and all recent coupon codes that customers have used on the specific site you’re shopping at. (Not sponsored, we just love it).
It goes without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway – wait for sales. Especially if you’re planning on going on a shopping spree. That way, you’ll only spend a fraction of what you normally would. Different stores and brands have varying sale patterns, but dates like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day, and towards the end of each season, are safe bets to expect markdowns. Also… you already know we love a good warehouse sale.
One of the best ways to save money is by avoiding impulse buys. Keep a shopping wish list on hand and try not to stray from it. For example, if you notice a particular gap in your wardrobe, jot it down in your notes app and focus on shopping for the things on your wish list rather than just aimlessly shopping. You can also make wish lists directly on most online retailer’s websites in order to keep tabs on your most coveted pieces.
You have to be careful with this one, as it can be all too easy to slip into debt, but simply paying with your credit card instead of debit or cash (only spending the amount you would on debit or cash, anyway) can earn you points and cashback (depending on your plan), but it also allows you to shop in a secure way.
As much as no one likes receiving too many branded emails in their inbox, you never know when that one email with a coupon code or information on a limited-time sale will come in. It’s definitely worth signing up for your favourite brand’s email subscriptions! Fun fact: In our weekly newsletter, we always include a round-up of 20 sales happening at the moment. 😉
Almost every brand you shop at likely has some kind of rewards program at this point. Be sure to join the reward programs from your favourite brands to get all kinds of perks. Sephora, for example, offers a point-based rewards program, where you can earn points to get free products or money off – plus get access to exclusive discounts during sale times.
We’ve all been guilty of buying an item, it not working out, and then it just ends up staying in the bag past the literal point of no return. Before buying anything, make sure to know the return policy, and actually return within the return window if it doesn’t end up working out! Otherwise, you might as well just throw out your money.
Shopping savvy is all about making informed shopping decisions. Before pulling the trigger on a specific item, do your research to ensure you’re getting the best price.
Whether you’re shopping online or in person, never neglect the power of a coupon! Browse the internet, check your mail for flyers, and tune into your favourite influencers offering discount codes!
When shopping in person, always do your own quality inspection. Check for any flaws, loose seams, or signs of a poorly made item. Follow @wangjenniferr on TikTok for tips on what to look for when checking garments for quality. When shopping online, be sure to perform your own little inspection when you receive it before pulling off any tags.

The fall season is arguably the best time of year to treat yourself to a day trip. With the beautiful colours that surround us, along with the crisp fall air, it’s the perfect time to get a short trip in before it reaches that time of year when it’s too cold to even want to go outside. We know travelling can be expensive and we don’t all have the luxury to pick up and leave our day-to-day lives. Luckily, there are so many great places surrounding Toronto that are totally day-trip worthy, so you don’t have to stray too far away to treat yourself to a day of fun activities, stunning scenery, and much-needed relaxation. We’ve rounded up a handful of easy and fun day trips you can go on that are under four hours away from Toronto!
Cranberry growing has been a Johnston family tradition since 1950, located within Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery, the cranberry farm is just about two hours away from Toronto. The farm has things to do all year round! This fall you can take a wagon tour, see the harvest, visit the Cranberry Café, or take the insta-worthy Cranberry Plunge, where you actually go into a cranberry marsh! If you want to have a fun day full of adventures, cranberries, and even some wine, check out Johnston’s Cranberry Farm!
Check out all of the wineries at the Beamsville Bench area! It makes up the westernmost part of the Niagara Peninsula wine-growing area and is home to some of the best vineyards in Ontario. Now all you have to choose is which wines you want to sip on that day.
Hamilton is only about an hour away from Toronto, and is the Waterfall Capital of the world! Some popular waterfalls in Hamilton are: Albion Falls, Webster Falls, Tiffany Falls, and so many more, as there are over 100 different waterfalls in the city! If you’re bored with your regular trail, a day trip to Hamilton is the perfect way to spice up your routine hike and see some amazing waterfalls.
There is a little something for everyone over at Kelso. You can take a lovely chairlift ride right down the escarpment, pack a lunch for a picnic, adventure around on a mountain bike, and so much more.
There are endless activities to do during a day trip to Niagara Falls which located under two hours away from Toronto. Clifton Hill is a Niagara Falls attraction that is sure to keep your day packed with all sorts of fun. Don’t miss out on great activities, including the Skywheel, where you can experience spectacular views, and the Wax Museum, where you can see your favourite celebrities in wax form. Also make sure you visit Ripley’s, or simply just walk around and enjoy the beauty of Niagara Falls.
Dundas Peak is a hiking trail located in Dundas, Ontario which is about an hour away from Toronto. Dundas Peak is known for its breathtaking, beautiful view at the top of the rocks, so if you love nature, hiking, and great views (who doesn’t?!) Dundas Peak is definitely worth checking out!
Algonquin Park may seem far away, but it’s actually only around three hours from Toronto! Algonquin Park is the perfect day getaway if you really want to forget about the city for a little while and enjoy the fine beauty that nature has to offer. Of course, we love a good hike, but forests and trails near the city just won’t have the same kind of nature or wildlife Algonquin as to offer. Let’s face it: you’re not going to get the chance to see a moose on your local Toronto trail!
Don’t want to travel for up to 4 hours? No worries. Mount Nemo is a total fan favourite with hikers in the area. This peaceful spot is perfect to take in the breathtaking view, which you can see the CN Tower if it’s a clear day!
The old town of Cambridge is so underrated! There are a ton of beautifully designed buildings, shops, and, of course, the Cambridge Grand River to walk around and explore.
Okay, so maybe going on hikes and getting down and dirty with nature isn’t your thing. If you’d rather spend a day off relaxing at the spa, Scandinave Spa has you covered. Located about over two hours outside of Toronto and surrounded by beautiful views, this spa is the perfect way to spend a day and relax. The Scandinave Spa offers multiple different packages, all sure to serve you ultimate relaxation.
Take a day trip to Canada’s Wonderland this fall to enjoy rides, roller coasters, games, food, and more! The hours vary throughout the fall, so check its calendar here! Halloween Haunt also begins September 27th until November 2nd if you’re up for an evening trip instead!
Popular for its ski hills, cozy hotels, and fun activities, visiting Blue Mountain is well worth the 2-ish hour drive, even if you’re just planning on spending the day! Visit the shops within the resort, eat great food (we recommend Firehall Pizza), and partake in numerous activities that are sure to keep you busy with a Day Pass.

If you’re on the hunt for quality men’s wardrobe staples and don’t know where to begin, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking to add to your denim collection or buy a new go-to knit for the cooler months, there are so many great stores to shop at, across all different price points. And let’s face it – not all wardrobe staples are made equally, so knowing what stores to visit is essential when shopping for essentials.
When it comes to wardrobe staples, Uniqlo knows what it’s doing. You can find everything from cashmere sweaters to dress shirts to functional outerwear, all at a reasonable price point. Plus, its pieces are never overly trendy, meaning they can last in your closet for years to come.
For all of your cozy clothing needs, head to Roots. Its sweat sets are notoriously super comfy, and the brand also carries some stylish basics as well.
Kotn is known for its timeless, high-quality, fashion-forward wardrobe basics. Browse through its selection of Canadian-designed essentials, all made with care from the finest natural fibres. Although the brand isn’t overly “cheap,” pretty much all of its items are under $200.
From perfect-fitting jeans to classic shirting, Everlane has it all. Hitting a high/middle price point, Everlane is a great place to shop for investment-worthy wardrobe staples, designed to be worn for years to come.
If you’re looking to add some high-end wardrobe staples to your wardrobe, check out Massimo Dutti’s extensive selection. We’d recommend shopping for items like blazers and jackets here, as you really are paying for quality and design.
Of course, it’s no secret that people turn to Lululemon for athletic wear, but did you know the brand also reps some really great everyday classics? Well, now you do. Whether you’re hitting the gym or going out to lunch, you can find an array of options at Lululemon.
For trendier wardrobe staples, you can’t forget about Zara. Here, you can shop for essential items with a modern twist at a relatively affordable price. There’s never any shortage of items to browse, as new styles are constantly being added.
If you’ve yet to check out Frank And Oak, what are you waiting for? Pretty much any item the store carries could be considered a wardrobe staple thanks to their classic and wearable designs.
