5 Stunning US Cities Within Driving Distance of Toronto
One of the (many) perks of living in Toronto is just how close we’re located to the US border. This opens up many opportunities for weekend road trips, without having to shell out a ton of money on plane tickets and other travel expenses. To assist in your upcoming travel plans this spring, we’ve put together a list of 5 US destinations that you can drive to from Toronto in 6.5 hours or less.
NIAGARA FALLS, NY
Travel Time: 1 h 40 min
If you grew up in Toronto, chances are you’ve been taking day trips to Niagara Falls, NY (or just “Buffalo” as we like to say) for as long as you can remember. With great malls like the Fashion Outlets, Boulevard and Walden Galleria (in addition to the mandatory Target, TJ Maxx and Trader Joe’s stops), Buffalo is always productive shopping trip. Not only is the merchandise selection different than what you’ll find in Toronto, but the prices are better too!

Travel Time: 4 h
You may not immediately think “vacation destination” when you think of Detroit, however, it’s still a great city to visit with a lot to offer. Detroit’s Motown Museum, which is located in the original “Hitsville U.S.A.” headquarters, is a must-see for music and history buffs. Other popular attractions include the Detroit Institute of Arts (which includes works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Picasso), catching a Detroit Tigers baseball game at Comerica Park, and visiting the Henry Ford Estate.
Travel Time: 5 h 4 min
In case you didn’t know, Cleveland has a bunch of fun attractions to check out. Of course one of the most popular things to do is take a musical pilgrimage to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which is spread over 6 floors and tells the stories of rock’s biggest legends. Other things to do while you’re there: catch an Indians game at Progressive Field stadium, take in the beauty at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, and eat your heart out at the West Side Market.
Travel Time: 5 h 30 min
Depending on traffic, Pittsburgh should take about five and a half hours to drive to from Toronto. Once you get there, you should get a bite to eat in the Strip District, which is full of trendy restaurants and shops. You’ll also want to enjoy some craft beer at one of the cities many breweries, and pay visits to the Andy Warhol Museum, the Heinz History Center and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY
Travel Time: 6 h 30 min
Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, Saratoga Springs is a storybook-like town full of old world charm. While it’s an excellent place to visit all year round, the city especially comes alive in the summer with its thoroughbred horseracing, so spending a day at the racetrack is a must! Other top-notch attractions include the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, the Saratoga Winery & Tasting Room, Saratoga Spa State Park and the Saratoga Automobile Museum.
