With outdoor dining season on the horizon, we wanted to help you choose the best bang for your buck. Shopping for wine can get expensive and stressful. If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you can end up feeling overwhelmed and confused. We’ve rounded up the top 5 tips to help you next time you’re buying wine.

1. What’s inside matters

Don’t be enticed by kitschy label designs, ones that have little to do with the wine itself and more about marketing a lifestyle. If the back label tells a fluffy story and gives little detail about the wine itself, it’s likely because there is not much to say about what is in the bottle.

2. Don’t follow the crowd

Try something different from the handful of wines that the masses drink. Try some different wines and decide for yourself what you like best, there is a world of exceptional wine out there to be discovered. Try some regions and grape varieties that are new to you. It will expand your tasting knowledge.

3. Revisit the Old World

A lot of wineries in Europe make wine in fresh, exciting styles and there is a lot of terrific value to be had in certain regions in Italy, Spain, Greece, Hungary, and Portugal.

Tuscany, Italy

4. Professional Opinion

Tap into the experience of the person working at your local store, they’ll have tasted loads of wines and can help to find exactly you what you need.

5. Comparison Test

To hone your tasting skills and really get to know a grape variety buy two bottles made from the same grape, but from two different countries. It will allow you to get familiar with the distinct characteristics of the grape, as well as the characteristics of two different regions.

This is our pick for the month:

Gabbiano – Chianti Classico 2014
