As the province enters Stage 3 of reopening, our list of summer activities is getting longer. This August, we’ll see restaurants, fitness centres, and other forms of entertainment reopen with restrictions, including movie theatres.
Canada’s largest movie theatre chain is one of the entertainment services that will be reopening. The company made the announcement after movie theatres were given the thumbs up to expand capacity.
Cineplex announced to open select cinemas across the province on Friday after Ontario’s chief medical officer of health gave movie theatres the green light to expand capacity.
Movie theatres are now permitted to have 50 people per screening and multiple screenings in one building at one time. Prior to this, movie theatres were only allowed to have 50 people in the building at a time, which would have meant that many theatres would operate at a loss. The change in restrictions is a huge win for theatres and moviegoers.

For a limited time, you can score movie tickets for select showings and theatres for just $5 and on Tuesdays, movie tickets will run for $2.99. You can reserve your seating online, which will ensure proper physical distancing. Additionally, guests in “communities where it is mandated” will be asked to wear masks for their visit, so don’t forget to bring yours!

Attention all movie lovers! If you’ve been missing your nights at the cinema, then this is the news for you. Cineplex has revealed its Canadian reopening plan and we don’t know about you, but we’re counting the days until we can get into theatres.

This news is super exciting but let’s not forget about the safety measure that will be put into place. According to The Chronicle Journal, Cineplex will ensure physical distancing between moviegoers with reserved seating as well as staggered showtimes to control congestion in lobbies.

“In all markets where Cineplex is permitted by government and health authorities, it plans to reopen as many of its locations as it can on July 3, 2020 (or as soon thereafter as permitted by law),” reads a release.

With the events that have unfolded over the past few weeks and everything we’ve learnt, it’s more important than ever to keep it up and continue educating ourselves. A great way to do that is to do a deep dive into black cinema to further understand all of the struggles, stories, and experiences. Although we can’t go to movie theatres right now (hello, COVID-19), Cineplex has done us a huge solid by making movies by black creators totally free to rent.
“In a time when many are turning to movies to become informed and empowered, we want to help. This collection of important films was curated to elevate Black stories, artists and filmmakers and spark discussion. These films are available to view at no cost,” reads the company’s website.

To start streaming, all you have to do is create an account and rent your movie of choice for $0. Once you rent it, it’ll be available to watch for two days.

While you’re there, spend your time cuddled up on the couch, roasting s’mores over a bonfire, and drinking hot chocolate.

Get outdoors while you still can without having to pile on a million layers of clothing and take a romantic hike with your boo. The best thing about the autumn season is all the colours of the changing leaves on the trees. So, grab your date and hit the trails to soak in the fresh air and admire that gorgeous view with your date!
