In a time where we’re relying on food delivery apps more than ever before, it’s disappointing to hear that one, that’s beloved by so many, is leaving us. It’s just been announced that food delivery app, Foodora will be leaving the Canadian marketplace, and it’s happening soon.

After 5 years in Canada, The delivery app will cease all Canadian operations by end of day on May 11.

In a release, the company stated that it “has been unable to reach a level of profitability in Canada that’s sustainable enough to continue operations.”

“I’m very proud of what foodora has accomplished over the last few years. I’ve been able to witness food delivery grow from its infancy into what it is today, and helping to build a brand I’m proud of. However, there’s been some challenges along the way. We’re faced with strong competition in the Canadian market, and operate a business that requires a high volume of transactions to turn a profit. We’ve been unable to get to a position which would allow us to continue to operate without having to continually absorb losses,” said David Albert, Managing Director of foodora Canada.

All employees and riders have been notified and, according to this release, “will continue to be paid as stipulated in their contractual agreements.”

Foodora currently has a roster of 3,000 restaurants in 10 cities across Canada.

Beginning today, one of the top on-demand food delivery services in Canada, foodora, will be delivering meals directly to the doors of Mississauga, Burnaby and Laval foodies.

If you haven’t heard of foodora yet, the service uses bike couriers to pick up your meal from your chosen restaurant and deliver it to your doorstep. Just enter your address in the app and it will bring up the closest restaurants to you that you can order from.

If you live in Mississauga, Burnaby or Laval, you can now order fresh restaurant food of your choice from more than 150 places. And the best part is that delivery on all foodora orders will be free for the first month in each city!

“Providing convenient and fresh delivery to Canadians has always been our top priority, and we are excited to continue expanding foodora’s services to Burnaby, Laval, and Mississauga,” said David Albert, Managing Director, foodora Canada. “With more restaurants being added to the platform, we look forward to the coming weeks where users in these communities can experience easy access to popular food spots and delivery that the larger neighbouring cities already have.”

To celebrate the company’s expansion, foodora partnered up with one restaurant in each city to offer a special dish made to represent the city:

In Mississauga, users can order the “Special Jerk Chicken Fried Rice” from Charlie’s Caribbean Cuisine. This dish includes Caribbean fusion fried rice, mixed with vegetables and bits of jerk chicken throughout and three pieces of jerk chicken leg and thigh on top. To celebrate the launch, Charlie’s Caribbean Cuisine is offering this popular dish for $7.99.

Burnaby can satisfy their cravings with the “Hail, Caesar-acha” from Big Star Sandwich Co.. The sandwich features roast beef, capocollo, lettuce, tomato, onion, caesar dressing, sriracha mayo and parmesan, priced at $9.89 for small and $12.49 for large.

Looking to spoil your other half with an unusual gift this Valentine’s Day? Foodora has got you covered! For a limited time only, the on-demand food delivery service teams up with local restaurants to deliver exclusive edible bouquets accompanied by a unique Valentine’s Day card with a message.

According to the company, the way to your lover’s heart is through their stomachs and we cannot agree more. “This year, we wanted to give foodies a new way to show their love and we thought what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by sending someone special a delicious and unique treat!” said David Albert, foodora Canada’s managing director.

In partnership with Bacon Nation and Fancy Frank’s, foodora created two different bouquets to satisfy both sweet and savoury tastes. The sweet option is called “I Adough You” and is made with vanilla glazed mini doughnuts, topped with cinnamon heart candies. The sweet bouquet will be available for $15 at Fancy Frank’s College, Queen, and Bloor West locations.

The company is sure that the second bouquet – Bacon Nation’s “BAE-con”- will hog the spotlight this Valentine’s Day. Six tasty bacon roses will cost you $25 and will definitely add a little sizzle to your relationship.

You can pre-order foodora’s food bouquets starting February 12 on the foodora app and website. Bouquets can also be ordered for delivery or pick-up for February 14, while quantities last.

Food delivery pulls on our heart strings because it combines two of our favourite things: eating and not having to leave the house.

There’s so much comfort in knowing that apps like Foodora are able to satisfy the most complex of our cravings at almost any hour of the day. Longing for dumplings? You’ve got it. Starting a juice cleanse? The app is brimming with options. What about some brisket? Yep, it’s available, juicy and slow cooked. And with Foodora’s delivery areas expanding to North York and Etobicoke, and new restaurant partners like Eat BKK Thai, Muncheez, The Burger’s Priest Queensway, Gohyang, TICH Modern Indian Cuisine, The Captain’s Boil , Woody’s Burgers and Pusateri’s, the options really are endless!

But with so many restaurant choices, sometimes making a decision is tough. And when you can’t decide, the city’s favourites can never fail! We asked the good people at Foodora to let us in on a little secret: the most ordered menu items and most popular plates on the menu.

Not so surprisingly, Torontonians have a penchant for Thai, with the particular cuisine raking a nice chunk of their orders and Salad King being the most popular restaurant on the whole app. Also in the top ten most popular Foodora restaurants are Fresh, The Burger’s Priest, Me Va Me, Banh Mi Boys, and Rolltation, with some restaurants having multiple locations in round-up.

And as for the city’s most requested dishes, the top 10 are as follows: Fried Chicken Bao, Cheeseburger, Lemongrass Chicken, Butter Chicken, Gyoza, Edamame, Five Spice Pork Belly Bao, Quinoa Onion Rings, Laffa Bread and Pad Thai.

Are you surprised by who topped the list of the most popular restaurants in Toronto?
