The day has finally come! Downtown Toronto is getting its very first IKEA location. That’s right, now you don’t have to travel outside the city to browse affordable furniture and snack on Swedish meatballs.

IKEA Canada announced the store will be situated on the first two floors of the Aurora Shopping Centre (382 Yonge Street) and will officially open on May 25 at 10 am.

The Aura location will actually be the very first of its kind across the country. In a small store format, it’ll offer the classic IKEA experience we all know and love plus innovative ways to shop and a new food concept.

IKEA Canada CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer, Michael Ward, spoke about the news in a release, “Opening our first store in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant downtown core is an important milestone in our  retail transformation to bring IKEA closer to where customers live, work, shop and socialize.”

What’s great about the 66,000 sq ft. shopping spot is that it’ll cater to the needs of Toronto residents including a major focus on affordable and sustainable items as well as small-space living solutions.

There will be over 2,000 products that will be available for immediate takeaway, while the larger pieces of furniture will be on display and available for home delivery. It also has the option to purchase your items from the IKEA app if you choose to do so or visit one of the multiple checkout lanes on both levels.

Now for the part you’ve been waiting for. The new food concept that’ll be implemented is called the Swedish Deli where you’ll find healthy meals and specialty beverages to enjoy while dining in, as well as recipes and food options to take out.

Due to the potentially high volume on opening week, register your spot in line at IKEA.ca!

Plus, three IKEA Design Studios will open in the GTA by November which includes 25 Peel Centre Drive in Brampton,  221 Glendale Avenue in St. Catharines, and 1680 Richmond Street North in London.

As of right now, you may be familiar with the Design Studio currently located at stackt Market which is open for business six days a week.

IKEA Design Studios are a bit different than the traditional IKEA storefronts. The spots are much smaller and have specifically picked products as well as a digital showroom.

Dreaming of IKEA’s famous meatballs? Well now you can make them yourself at home because the global furniture retailer with its even more iconic in-store restaurant has blessed us with the recipe.

In true IKEA fashion, the meatball recipe has been shared in cute step-by-step instructions, similar to a manual for building its furniture.

Instagram/@ikeacanada

The recipe isn’t at all complicated, unlike building IKEA furniture, and it’s comprised of ingredients that can be easily found at your local grocery store. We bet you even have most them in your refrigerators at home.

Here’s how to make them!

IKEA

For the meatballs

  • 500g beef mince
  • 250g pork mince
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, crushed or minced
  • 100g breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tablespoons of whole milk
  • generous salt and pepper

Method:

  • Combine beef and pork mince and mix with your fingers to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper
  • Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover, and store in the fridge for 2 hours. This will help them hold their shape whilst cooking.
  • In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add meatballs and brown on all sides.
  • When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven (180°C or 160°C with a fan) and cook for 30 minutes more.

For the cream sauce:

  • dash of oil
  • 40g butter
  • 40g plain flour
  • 150ml vegetable stock
  • 150ml beef stock
  • 150ml thick double cream
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard

Method:

  • Melt 40g of butter in a pan. Whisk in 40g of flour and stir for 2 minutes. Add 150ml of veg stock and 150ml of beef stock; continue to stir. Add 150ml of double cream, 2 tsp soy sauce, and 1 tsp dijon mustard.
  • Bring to a simmer and allow sauce to thicken.
  • When ready to eat, serve over meatballs with your favourite potatoes — either a creamy mash or mini boiled potatoes.

Luckily enough, IKEA is continuing to expand their ready-to-eat bistro food to something that will attract more customers but also stays loyal to their affordable price points.

This week, the Swedish chain announced a new veggie dog that only costs .75 cents and will continue to introduce veggie-friendly offerings to the Canadian menu soon. This even includes a plant-based soft serve that is expected to arrive next year.
