Summer is in full swing so it’s time to test out Toronto’s new patios. The sun is shining and the days are long, so bring your sunscreen, have a drink, and enjoy the rays.

Assembly Chef’s Hall

A post shared by Toronto Life Guide (@torontolifeguide) on

At 4,000 square feet, this is Toronto’s biggest new patio. No need to line up or wait for a harried host to seat you. It’s all self-serve, so just pull up a chair on the patio, which has a bar converted from an Airstream trailer. There are 18 restaurants inside, all self-serve, including DaiLo, Ramen Isshin, and more, plus a second terrace at the back. There is some communal seating, some tables for two and a few loungers, with one area partly covered. This place has something for everyone’s tastes.

The Rooftop at the Broadview

A post shared by Sunshine After Dark (@sunshine.after.dark) on

If you love stunning 360 views of Toronto’s skyline and fun cocktails with cute names, this romantic place is for you. There are snacks to share, charcuterie and cheese boards, beef tartare, pork buns, salmon ceviche, and other treats. The rooftop brunch is available every day until 3 p.m. Sun is plentiful, and with 140 seats, you have your pick of tables for two, for four, plus bar seats.

Gare de L’Est

A post shared by Gare de l’Est Brasserie (@gdlbrasserie) on

If the Broadview Hotel scene is too crowded for your taste, this under-the-radar brasserie, run by the same people who did the food program at the Broadview, is just a few minutes away at Queen and Carlaw. Open from lunch until late night, sink into a handsome blue-cane bistro chair and enjoy an aperitif or a Saulter Street pilsner brewed only a few blocks away. If you’re going to a  show at the adjoining Crow’s Theatre, there’s a $36 prix fixe dinner.

Drake Mini Bar

A post shared by PAGE SONG | Fashion + Travel (@page.song) on

While the Financial District can feel soulless, this sunny outdoor terrace is an oasis, with plenty of greenery and a real waterfall. Drake’s latest venture also has an indoor “patio” space, with colorful banquettes and tropical palm fronds, topped with a pergola that you can enjoy in the winter, watching the snow outside. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails are available, so sit under one of the umbrellas and savour the weather.

Dumbo Snack Bar

A post shared by Alyssa Cabral (@alyssacabralxo) on

Located at the former Raca Café and Bar, this cozy back patio is a full-blown party spot, complete with fire pit, pop-up bar and a jam-packed events calendar (including movie screenings and silent disco nights). Want something different and potent? Try a teapot cocktail, served in weird vintage pots sourced from the restaurant’s patrons. Nightbirds can revel here until 2 am!

Northern Maverick

A post shared by Northern Maverick Brewing Co. (@northernmaverickbrewing) on

If you didn’t check out this beer hall’s large patio at the end of patio season last year, now’s your chance. Its front terrace has 100 seats of prime beer-drinking real estate, where you can sample a flight of house-brewed beers and shucked oysters, a buck-a-shuck on Sundays. Lots of afternoon sun, with seating for two, and four.

K?ST

A post shared by K?st (@kosttoronto) on

With dizzying city and waterfront views of Lake Ontario from 44 stories high, a swimming pool to pose at for selfies, pitchers of sangria, and Baja California-inspired dishes, Kost holds court on the rooftop of the new and ritzy Bisha Hotel. All-white patio sets grace the poolside real estate, where you can soak up the sun on loungers. This is not for those on a budget: Kost margaritas and fancy G&Ts run a cool $16 and $17, respectively.

Constantine

A post shared by Constantine (@constantine_toronto) on

The fancy, clubby lobby lounge at the Anndore House has an equally swank patio, ideal for people watching. With navy-hued planter boxes, modern chairs, and fern fronds overhead, there is some protection from the sun from an overhang. Savour the Mediterranean menu from Constantine, Chef Craig Harding, including lamb burgers, wood-fired pizzas, Fogo Island cod, and inventive cocktails and huge wine selections.

Lot 30 Brewers

A post shared by Lot 30 Brewers (@lot30brewers) on

The old Landsdowne Brewery has been transformed into Lot 30 Brewers, with a sun-drenched 36-seat front patio. There are five communal tables where you can sample their nine brews, all brewed in-house. Guzzle their new releases, like a NEIPA hopped with Simcoe and Mosaic with upcoming strawberry kiwi and boysenberry sours, under their sizeable umbrellas.

New releases, like a NEIPA hopped with Simcoe and Mosaic and upcoming strawberry kiwi and boysenberry sours, are made to guzzle sleeveless and behind polarized shades. July will mark the up is a piña colada brew, obviously.

Café Cancan

A post shared by Café Cancan (@cafecancanto) on

A pastel dream of a place, Victor Barry’s Harbord bistro has a 30-seat back patio that has everything…fairy lights, a floral print mural, and wicker bistro chairs. Open for a leisurely weekend brunch, a hearty dinner, or late night cocktails and light snacks.

Toronto’s best patios are a staple of the summer season. While immediate proximity to your home or office is a bonus, the cream of the crop are destination-worthy and most definitely worth the trip. Explore a neighbourhood you might not venture to and you might just discover a hidden gem. The trifecta of food, friends, and fancy drinks all but guarantee a good time.

Bar Reyna

best patios in toronto

The queen of Yorkville has now been crowned with Bar Reyna reimagining the space that was once Caren’s Wine and Cheese Bar. The back patio is a jaw-dropper; a chic space with banquette style seating, and charming wooden feature walls which all but beckon you to lose track of time (and how many copper pineapples you’ve tipped). The retractable roof keeps this patio party going year-round, and who can resist a menu devoted to French fries?

Trattoria Nervosa

best patios in toronto

Celebrating their 20th anniversary this month, Trattoria Nervosa has been a cornerstone in Yorkville’s restaurant scene. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in people watching, including famously hosting Blue Ivy and her parents when they were in town in 2013. Owned by the Gusto 54 Group, the kitchen pours out upscale Italian eats and pairs them perfectly with their old world wine list or pitchers of sangria.

Chabrol

best patios in toronto

With more seats outside than in, Summer may be your best time to visit Chabrol, the hidden jewel of Yorkville. Only open since last fall, the sister restaurant to Cava specializes in French food, with Doug Penfold executing classic cuisine in a kitchen that is no bigger than most walk in closets. Slightly shaded and set back from the busy avenue, this patio is a perfect perch for those who wish to see without being seen.

Bar Buca

bar buca best patios in toronto

The concrete jungle may surround Bar Buca, but with wafts of freshly planted rosemary and even more drool-worthy aromas permeating from the kitchen, Bar Buca’s patio is truly a downtown oasis. Part grab and go, part sit and swoon, this eatery has gourmet finds like the stunning Caprese Salad ($11), Insalata d’Arancia ($10) or the porky Porchetta ($14) all paired flawlessly with their deluxe cocktail program. Smart money stops by between 4pm and 7pm for their aperitivo ‘happy hour’, with a picture-perfect platter of gourmet bites that will whet any appetite.

El Catrin

el catrin best patios in toronto

Distillery District darling El Catrin is a favourite for downtown patio-goers, and for good reason. The massive space is punchy and fun – with hits of colour from the playful décor and swathed in mood lighting that makes Distillery such a destination for countless date nights. Tipples here are mainly tequila based, which pair nicely with their share-style menu that goes beyond mere tacos.

Miku

best patios in toronto

If the humidex is high head south to the lake, with Miku’s brand new patio, giving diners a brief reprieve from the heat with gentle breezes swooping in from the nearby lake. Miku’s patio is a breath of fresh air, with not only a dining area but also a laidback lounge perfect for sake sipping. Aburi style sushi lends itself well to the lakeside location.

Auberge du Pommier

best patios in toronto

The cottage in the city that is Auberge du Pommier is still as quaint and charming as it always has been, now surpassing its 29th year on Yonge just a pinch past York Mills. Swathed in greenery, this lush patio terrace evokes the French cuisine that current Chef Malcolm Campbell has been executing on with great success, including the delectable weekday afternoon Champagne menu, which sees guests clinking glasses of Perrier-Jouët and noshing on midday nibbles like fresh market oysters or steak tartare.

Colette

colette best patios in toronto

White lattice surrounds the beautiful patio that houses Colette, part of the Thompson Hotel (which of course has a splendid rooftop that is not to be missed). Sidled up to Wellington Ave West, this quiet patio is a relaxing space to reinvigorate to start your day, but even better with a squad for a little cinq a sept with a special menu dubbed Île de Colette meant for especially for the summer season.

Macho Radio Bar

best patios in toronto

The sunny patio at Macho Radio Bar is a nifty find in City Place. The patio is a flanked by a colourful pergola that echoes the party theme inside. Pitchers of sangria wash down a little too easily, especially paired with their Chorizo Queso Fundido ($10) or Macho Fries ($12). The patio vibe here replicates a day at the beach mood so try and snag one of the back booth tables for extra-long fiesta fun.
