When the cold weather hits, it can be tempting to stay bundled up inside hibernating for the next four to six months (or however long it takes until we see the sun again). With snow on the ground and temperatures in the double negatives, the last thing on anyones mind is going on a date. But this year don’t let your love life catch the winter blues. These cheap and cozy winter dates will make you fall in love with the city you live in – and maybe even with that special someone you bring along with you.

Here are 8 fun and cheap winter dates to go on in Toronto!

Spend a Friday Night Live at the ROM

Explore the Toronto Christmas Market

The annual Toronto Christmas Market is a must-see attraction in the months leading up to the holidays. If you haven’t been, then you definitely need to check it out and if you have then you know how magical it is. Stroll hand in hand with your date as you browse the vendors for unique gifts and tasty winter treats. With Christmas carollers singing in the background and Christmas lights giving off a romantic glow, it will feel like a scene from a Christmas movie. All the holiday fun starts on November 14 and admission is free Monday to Thursday, but will only cost you $8 on the weekend.

Go For A Skate at The Bentway

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtmK4JdFIGX/

Skating is such a classic and fun winter activity – making it an obvious idea for a cute and casual date. For an under-the-radar spot, you and your date can avoid the crowds of tourists at Nathan Phillips Square and head to The Bentway to slip on your skates instead. This outdoor event space under the Gardiner Expressway opened last year and transforms in the winter into a winding skating trail.

Catch a Concert at the Danforth Music Hall

cheap winter dates
Instagram/@danforthsidebar

If you and your significant other are live music fans, then a concert might just be the perfect date for you guys. A show at iconic Toronto music venue, Danforth Music Hall is your chance to see an up-and-coming artist in a more intimate setting. Who knows, you might even get to see the next Drake or Shawn Mendes. For some pre-concert fuel, the venue just opened its own restaurant, the Danforth Sidebar.

Go for A Drink

cheap winter dates
Instagram/@sylviapinsono

Going for drinks is, understandably, the most common first date idea. It’s a low-pressure way to get to know someone in a casual environment, and the drinks help chase away any first date nerves. If you’re looking to switch it up a bit, we recommend going to a speciality bar this winter. After all, the best thing about winter is the excuse to drink all the warm drinks we were too sweaty to have in the summer. Her Father’s Cider Bar + Kitchen on Harbord has a selection of over 100 ciders to choose from, so you and your date can compete to find the best tasting one.

Watch a Movie at the Paradise Theatre

cheap winter dates
Instagram/@paradiseonbloor

This historic Toronto theatre is reopening on December 6 after a major renovation just in time to host your winter movie dates. The theatre will show a mix of new films and older classics as well as a variety of live shows. The art deco building will add a vintage feel to your date, giving it much more character than just seeing the newest blockbuster at the movie theatre at your local mall.

Experience the Toronto Light Festival

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt8uJqlAJAU/

From January to March, The Distillery District is being transformed into a visual experience put on by the Toronto Light Festival. This is the third year for the festival, so you know it’s going to be better than ever before. Despite the frigid cold, there are plenty of reasons why you should get outside — one of them being the third annual Toronto Light Festival at the Distillery District, which is open from now until March 3.

This year, the festival will feature over 30 light exhibits from local and international artists.

Scattered across the Distillery District, Toronto Light Fest is the largest outdoor light sculpture gallery in North America. The third annual event aims to draw people out of winter hibernation to bring positivity and light to their lives during the dreariest of days.

Visitors can check out the lights seven days a week, as soon as the sun goes down. But the Distillery will also be hosting some fun daytime events. From art by Toronto’s leading mural artists and live music, to complimentary alcohol tastings on the weekends and outdoor (heated) brunch on the El Catrin patio, the area has so much to offer!

Not to mention, if you drop by Tunnelception (pictured above), you can try Reese’s latest snack: the Reese’s Pieces Peanut Candy. Candy dispensers will be there every weekend until the end of the festival, and you could be one of the first in Canada to try to delicious, new candy!

We had the opportunity to chat with Mathew Rosenblatt, Co-Founder of the Distillery Restaurants Corporation.

Below he tells us about Toronto Light Festival 2019, what readers can expect from the Distillery District in the future, and more. Take a peek below!

toronto light festival 2019

StyleDemocracy: Why are you excited to bring back the Toronto Light Festival?

Mathew Rosenblatt: Turning on the electricity and witnessing how light, creativity and passion can instantly transform a neighbourhood and a City.

SD: What light installation do you think Torontonians will be the most excited to see?

MR: I think the favourites will include a 35-foot polar bear sculpture and an interactive DNA like light sculpture, but what do I know? Torontonians might like Enunciation (a light cave) by Taylor Dean Harrison, or The Phoenix Rainbow by The Phoenix Rainbow team.

Toronto light fest 2019

SD: Are there any new stores or restaurants that you would suggest our readers to visit?

MR: Madrina (Spanish for Godmother,) is a must visit for anyone who has ever wanted to try an authentic modern Spanish tapas restaurant. Expect sensational modern Catalan fare prepared by Michelin trained Chef Ramon Simarro. The atmosphere is beyond gorgeous, but don’t worry the service is still warm and casual.

SD: What are your thoughts on the Distillery District being named one of the coolest shopping districts in the world?

MR: We’re deeply honoured to be included as one of the coolest shopping districts in the world. We are fortunate to live in a city that values atmosphere, creativity and lifestyle over franchises and widgets.

Toronto light fest 2019

SD: Are there any special events planned at the Distillery District for the rest of the year that you can talk about?

MR: Separate from the large scale events, this year The Distillery will deepen its world renowned ambience and atmosphere. Expect to discover free live music, unique food interactions, ice wine and champagne samplings,  farmers and flower markets and so much more.

SD: What else can our readers expect from the Distillery District in the future?

MR: Expect to be surprised. Especially if you take the time to open some of the iconic green doors and discovered what is inside.

Toronto winters can be drawn-out, dark, and dreary. Luckily, the Distillery District has partnered with a number of Canadian, European, and American artists to bring a little light into our lives.

From January 27th to March 12th, the Distillery District will literally by lit.

toronto light festival

With inspiration from the ever-popular Amsterdam Light Festival, 21 large light sculptures and installations have been scattered throughout the streets, shops, and galleries for the inaugural Toronto Light Festival.

And there are a couple of charity aspects to the event too! Visitors can purchase locks, ranging from $5 to $15, to contribute to two artworks by Toronto Light Festival Creator & Executive Director, Mathew Rosenblatt. All funds raised will go to The Yonge Street Mission. The Mission is also collecting funds online and each time someone donates, two light cannons at the Toronto Light Festival will shift closer and closer – once the goal of $10,000 is reached, the beams will cross and light up in celebration.

Another soon-to-be Instagram favourite installation is Angels of Freedom designed by Israel-based OGE Group. Each time someone uploads a social snap in front of the wings with the hashtag #MillStLights, Mill Street Brewery will donate $1.00 to the Daily Bread Food Bank, plus the snapper will be entered to win Beer for a Year.
