Fall is arguably the best season for fashion. The humidity is replaced by a cool breeze and jewel-toned leaves, which mean the return of knit sweaters and leather jackets. Lipgloss is replaced with dark brown lipstick and it’s time to retire your favourite Levi’s cut-offs. But, as autumn approaches, so do the new arrivals of coats, chunky knits, and ankle boots and every year offers different iterations of the same roster of fashion and beauty trends.

Here are 7 fall fashion trends that will be huge!

Bright Pastels

fall fashion trends

Zara

Pastels are quintessentially spring but shades like rose, pistachio, and lavender tones are not privy to your Easter egg hunt. But what do you get when you supersaturate and brighten a pastel? A bold statement colour and this season, we’ll be seeing pastel versions of royal purples, true greens, and cobalt blues, both on the runway and in editorial beauty spreads. Style a bright purple sweater, like this Zara one with true blue denim to make a simple outfit more colourful. Whether you’re a maximilast or minimalist, you can incorporate this trend into your existing personal style by adding easy, layerable pieces. Or, if you prefer a more neutral #ootd, adding in a bright green nail colour or blue cat-eye is a great way to dip your toe into the trend.

Platforms

fall fashion trends

Instagram/@emmaleger

We’ve seen platforms come and go for a while now. We saw it with Stella McCartney’s Derby shoes, Gucci’s Angel platform pumps, and now with Saint Laurent’s Paige sandals. Although these aren’t the most wearable, they sure are hot to look at. Incorporate the shoe into your personal wardrobe with a more neutral toned version. You can even go the extra mile and pair them with fun socks for the autumn weather. We’re currently coveting this pair from The Raye as it ticks all the boxes.

The Clog

fall fashion trends

SSENSE

It’s about time these babies made a comeback. From Isabel Marant to Jacquemus, designers are reinventing the clog. Whether it be a revamp of the classic hippie clog or a Scandi-inspired way to look like Marcia Brady, we’re here for it. Also, it’s the perfect transitional footwear from summer to fall as it’s great for sliding on and off, and pairing with denim or dresses. Not only are clogs high fashion, but they’re also highly functional. These clogs from Jacquemus are in our cart because we just can’t get enough of this trend!

Hygge

fall fashion trends

Instagram/@birkenstock

Remember when we were first introduced to Hygge as a comfy, cozy approach to lifestyle? This concept has now inched its way into the fashion world and it goes far beyond chunky knits. If you thought the pyjama suit was the end of wearable loungewear, think again because fluffy slippers, chunky robes, and sexy knitwear are now part of the new off-duty uniform. From labels like Jil Sander and Khaite, this trend is trickling down to fast-fashion houses quickly. Layer a knit bra under an unbuttoned crisp white shirt and wool blazer, or under a matching cardigan for a chic spin on grandma-fashion. Birkenstocks seems to be right on trend with these shearling lined sandals.

Everything Quilted

fall fashion trends

ZARA

Thanks to Bottega Veneta’s creative director Daniel Lee, the quilted trend is akin to Celine, and we’re here for it. You can currently cop the trend from Zara, Mango, and other affordable shops, or make it your seasonal investment trend. Looking to accessorize with the puffy trend? These white quilted slides from Zara are a great way to transition into September, and don’t worry, whoever said you can’t wear white after labour day is just plain wrong.

Low Waisted Jeans

The 90’s have been back for what seems like a few years now, but low waisted jeans are officially back in full force. Iconically worn by JLo, Nicole Richie, and Paris Hilton, its 2019 revival is more refined, clean cut, and chic. This polarizing trend is totally doable when styled with the right pieces. Find a pair while thrifting and then tailoring them to make it your perfect fit. Or, find a pair in your preferred wash and these AGOLDE’s are a cool way to style the trend and are perfect for tucking sweaters into!

Corset Layering

fall fashion trends

Instagram/@orseund_iris

This way of styling is pretty easy to incorporate. Orseund Iris has its iconic knit corset piece that is seen layered on top of flowy dress or oversized sweaters to add some nuanced sex appeal to any look. This is also an easy DIY if you have a sewing machine on hand.

For some, figuring out how to spend your hard-earned money is just as hard as spending it. But if you’re anything like me, throwing your money at impulse purchases and fast fashion is easy.

What’s in your bank account right now might be able to get you those trendy pieces you’ll love for a season, but changing the direction of where those hard-earned dollars is what elevates your closet into something out of a Coveteur editorial.

Sometimes to have it all, you’ve got to go slow; you’ve got to save up for those collectors-worthy items — it just takes time, patience, and dedication. Easier said than done, I know. But you can get started with a few fashion classics that will never go out of style.

Here are 11 classic designer items worth splurging on:

Louis Vuitton Sarah Wallet

Louis Vuitton Sarah Wallet
Louis Vuitton

A Louis Vuitton wallet is a great classic designer investment piece for a couple of reasons. It’s much roomier than it looks and because it’s Louis Vuitton, you know you’ll use it forever. And for $810, it’s $970 cheaper than the iconic Neverfull GM – aka a steal (well not really, but you know what we mean).

Shop it here: Louis Vuitton, Sarah Wallet, $810

Chanel Earrings

Chanel

A classic designer Chanel item that’s definitely worth investing in is their earrings. The earrings in their costume jewellery collection look much more expensive than they actually are, and wear just as well with a pair of jeans as they do an LBD.

Shop it here: Chanel, Gold, Pearly White & Crystal Earrings, $625

Burberry Trench Coat

burberry trench coat
Burberry

A Burberry trench coat is probably one of the most timeless classic designer investment purchases you can make. This type of coat has been in style forever, and that does not appear to be changing any time soon. Also, if you live in a climate that has cold and rainy seasons, you’re guaranteed to get a ton of use out of it year after year.

Shop it here: Burberry, Kensington Heritage Trench Coat, $2,550

Cartier Love Bracelet

The Cartier love bracelet may have only become mainstream in recent years (thanks in part to Kylie Jenner who’s a huge fan), however, it’s actually been around since 1969. Famous for the unique way it’s put on (you have to lock it up with a mini screwdriver), this is a bracelet you can wear for the rest of your life – literally.

Shop it here: Cartier, Love Bracelet (Yellow Gold), $7,950

Gucci Loafers

Gucci

Yes they cost a pretty penny, but a pair of Gucci loafers is a classic designer buy you’ll never regret. Whether you splurge on a pair of the backless mules or the classic closed-heel style, your feet will be so comfy (and look so good) you’ll never want to take them off.

Shop it here: Gucci, Princetown Embroidered Leather Slippers, $975

Tom Ford Sunglasses

Nordstrom

Every girl needs a pair of classic black, Jackie-O style sunnies her collection. We love how these Tom Ford ones have a timeless look, but with a modern twist.

Buy it: Nordstrom, Tom Ford Alistair 56mm Gradient Sunglasses, $601.05

Chanel Double Flap Bag

classic designer
Instagram/@luxxy_lox

If you want a big, tall glass of classic, a Chanel Double Flap Bag is it. The best investment would be the OG black caviar leather with gold hardware — it’ll last throughout your lifetime, well into your granddaughter’s. If you’re going to drop big bucks, get something you can wear through every season, with every outfit, for every occasion.

Luckily, you can almost always find it on sites like TheRealReal.com or Vestiaire Collective. Although the Chanel flap comes in a multitude of sizes, the medium is the most reliable. And not only will it exceed your cost-per-wear, but it will never lose its value.

Shop it here: The RealReal, Chanel Classic Double Flap Bags, $3,500 to $8,900

#OldCéline

classic designer
The RealReal

Anyone with an appreciation for fashion knows getting your hands on any of Phoebe Philo’s designs for Céline is enough. As a collector, you know the adrenaline rush of scouting those #OldCéline wedges the Olsen Twins wore in the mid-2000s. With people seeking the resurgence of Bottega Venetta (#NewBottega) to maintain what is reminiscent of Philo’s palette, you can only truly attain it through her relics. Scour vintage shops, consignment stores, and qualified resellers to find your dream piece. I’ve set alerts for the Gourmette Bag in Green Suede from the Fall 2012 Collection and the Crystal Moon Hoops from one of her last collections. Or better yet, cop these studded beauties from a few years ago.

Shop it here: The RealReal, Céline Studded Pointed-Toe Mules, $608.21

AllSaints Moto Jacket

Instagram/@birgitmiechielssens

Whether it’s in brown suede or smooth black leather, the AllSaints Balfern is as necessary as ketchup on fries. This jacket will carry you through season after season, and like any good wine, gets better with age. Wear it in, age the leather, and soften its fit for a truly personal piece. This staple item can be scored during their end-of-season sales, but is worth paying full price. Plus, its ability to go with any look will guarantee your cost-per-wear ratio to be well worth it.

Shop it here: AllSaints, Balfern Leather Jacket, $615

Vintage Pucci

emilio pucci vintage
The RealReal

Like Old Céline, you can only truly appreciate Pucci’s designs by collecting his original designs. Although his gowns and swimwear are highly-coveted, all you need is a neck scarf to satiate your craving for his bright colourways and signature patterns. Add a little retro flare to any outfit with a subtle but significant accessory. The colourway in this classic neck scarf is both retro and wearable, so you get the perfect dosage.

Shop it here: The RealReal, Emilio Pucci Printed Square Scarf, $82.01

Premium denim

classic designer
J Brand

We all love a good pair of Topshop Jamies, considering we have them in every cut and wash. But investing in a good pair of premium denim will last you a good decade and wear into your perfect shape. One of my favourite brands is J Brand, which integrates comfort with style within their brand philosophy and design execution. It’s also a a go-to for celebrities. Cut for the most flattering fit, you’ll find just the right wash and in-seam with J Brand. Being 4’11, my favourite cut is the Alana Cropped. When it comes to premium denim, the price is always worth the splurge — just make sure that you’re getting a classic wash, like a classic black or indigo.

Shop it here: J Brand, Alana High-Rise Cropped Super Skinny In Fix, $228

I’m sure we all know that the right footwear can make or break your whole outfit. This is why investing in quality shoes seriously matters. Honestly, I think that one can never have enough shoes, and if the shoe fits, buy it in every colour. Elevate your casual jeans and tee with a pair of killer stilettos, or pair a tulle skirt with your favourite pair of sneakers. Plus, a great way to dip your toes into a new trend is by testing it out with a pair of shoes. Think of pairing  your biker shorts with cowboy boots for a western touch, or chunky sneakers with a flowy maxi dress for a sporty vibe. If you’re looking to spruce up your shoe wardrobe but not blow the budget, then you need to hit up these affordable shoe stores in Toronto.

Here are 5 affordable places to go shoe shopping in Toronto.

Fashionably Yours

If you’re a diamond girl on a cubic zirconia budget, it might be wise to consider consignment shopping. Toronto’s robust fashion communities influence the unique inventory of designer goods in every store, and Queen West’s Fashionably Yours has designer footwear priced at a serious steal. Mix and match your low meets high budget buys for a well-balanced outfit: think your favourite wash of Topshop jeans, crisp white H&M button down blouse, and a classic pair of Chanel flats. Consignment shopping is also a low-risk way of adding non-conventional or stand-out pieces without breaking the bank.

Plato’s Closet

Shoe shoppers rejoice! At Plato’s Closet, get ready to shop the best of the best. Find the perfect pair of pumps you’ve been searching for, or score brand new Nike runners for a price you’d have to see to believe. The best part is, there are multiple stores located within the GTA to scour racks and find the best inventory. You can also skip the thrift-store anxiety as the lovely staff and smaller store make it much more enjoyable to shop!

The Shoe Company

This one’s for the shoe-aholics. Longstanding The Shoe Company carries a great selection of sneakers, sandals, heels, and boots in lots of different colours. Not only that, but make sure you check out the stores clearance section in the back for even further reductions on shoes by brands we all know and love like Steve Madden, Birkenstock, Nike, and Cole Haan.

Call It Spring

A mall fave for a very good reason, Call It Spring is known for its trendy selections all while being wallet-friendly. Plus, did you know the brand is now fully vegan? Expect to shop chic and trendy heels, boots, flats, and summery sandals for a major steal — seriously, $60 will get you a pair of killer stilettos. In addition to footwear, Call It Spring also stocks cuter than cute accessories that are also affordable. If that’s not enough for you, the brand recently launched a collab with Disney to celebrate the new Lion King movie and it’s adorable!

Winners

Ask any fashion girl for her secret to affordable yet chic outfits and it’s probably Winners. One thing to know about shopping Winners is that location matters. This has helped me navigate how to locate the best products in every category, as every neighbourhood has it’s own special selection. If you’re looking for high-end shoes at a fraction of the cost, hit up Winners on Bloor. I once scored a killer pair of Balenciaga pumps for just $150 Also, I may add they were sitting right next to YSL stilettos. Find all kinds of shoes from a range of brands for discounted prices. The turn-over-rate of new brands and trends in the fashion industry is at an all-time high. Keep your eyes and ears open for the quiet buzz of new brands that are redefining the ethos and approach to fashion and beauty. Discovering a new line before everything is sold out is exactly the same feeling as discovering a band before they make it big on the radio. If you’re looking to shop some under-the-radar brands, then today is your lucky day!

Want to get ahead of the masses? Don’t sleep on checking out these 8 under-the-radar brands!

Susan Alexandra

under the radar brands

Instagram/@bryannacollier

This quintessentially quirky brand, Susan Alexandra is making accessorizing fun and exciting again. All ’90s kids will rejoice with the brands use of charms and beads that are reminiscent of friendship bracelets that were oh-so-popular in that decade. Known for its eclectic handbags akin to something you’d find in an old Delia’s catalog, these pieces make high-end luxury playful. The brand leans slightly towards the more affordable end of designer, and all the pieces are made by hand in New York. It’s so cool that the inspiration is drawn from classic New York bodegas, vintage Oilily patterns, hip hop, candy, and a range of emotions.

Nagnata

under the radar brands

Instagram/@nagnata_

Now part of Net-a-Porter’s NET SUSTAIN line, Nagnata is an Australian athleisure brand that’s equal parts fashionable and functional. This highly-sustainable line uses certified organic material with minimal wastage, upcycled textiles, clean dyes, and ethical and fair trade manufacturing. Nagnata’s cotton is what makes every piece stand out and it’s all treated without synthetic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.

Biba

Formulated by the LA salon with the same namesake, Biba takes a chic approach to holistic beauty. The brand believes that skincare starts from within. Reducing cortisol levels, ridding of adrenaline deposits, and lymphatic drainage are part of simplifying skincare. The brands founder, Biba, wants to get rid of the intimidation and trendy fads that so often distract consumers. If you don’t find yourself in Beverly Hills, you can luckily order skincare line online. I’ve got my eyes on the Daily Cleanser, Mandelic Meta Serum, Plant Stem Cell Peptide Serum, and Calming Sulfur Zinc Mask.

Fisch Swim

under the radar brands

Instagram/@thisway_

Swimwear meets athleticwear line, Fisch Swim is handmade in Italy from Italian ECONYL®, a sustainable kind of regenerated nylon fibre made from fishing nets. To decrease the brands carbon footprint, and to maximize the sustainability of its business model, Fisch Swim’s fabric mill and swimwear factory are just two hours apart from each other. If you’re one for quality, Fisch’s textiles are woven in Lombardy, one of the top manufacturers of luxury textiles in the world. I’m currently coveting every piece in the Leo print, partially because leopard IS in fact a neutral, and partially because I am a Leo.

1 Day Beauty

under the radar brands

Instagram/@1daybeautyco

This Toronto-based makeup line is made up of just lip liners and lipsticks, with a heavy focus on nude tones that are suitable for all skin tones. This brand is women-founded and owned, and it practices inclusivity through the hashtag #allclusive. Through lipstick, 1 Day Beauty works to “democratize beauty as a brand that can be as fluid as the people who consume it.” Oh, did I mention these lippies last through pizza night?

Carla Colour

Give it a season, and this glasses brand, Carla Colour, will be seen on street style stars everywhere. I recently purchased the Beryl Amber’s and I don’t have an ounce of buyer’s remorse. The Kenzie’s are a classic ’90s shape reminiscent of what Caroline Bessete wore. This brand takes unconventional shapes and colours, and makes them totally wearable for everyday.

Angela Roi

under the radar brands

Instagram/@girlyveganblog

Vegan leather can easily be a hit or miss, and most likely a miss if you don’t want to shell out serious cash. Find your next everyday bag or evening clutch thanks to the Angela Roi’s clean colours and classic shapes. The Mini Hamilton Crossbody is perfect for anyones daily commute or girl’s night out. The chain strap detail adds edge to the minimalistic design, and adjusts to be worn crossbody or over-the-shoulder.

OW Intimates

under the radar brands

Instagram/@sonjadavidsen

Let’s focus on this British intimates line’s bodysuits for a second. Yes, it’s the brands bras and undies will make it into your shopping cart, but it’s the bodysuits that will make you check out. Do yourself a favour and invest in high-quality basics, but with OW, you’ll get them with a twist. The brands Cushnie-esque cutout design makes simple, neutral bodysuits a little more exciting, and the perfect addition to your daily uniform.  Also, Jojo Bodysuit will go with everything, without the generic white T-shirt simplicity.

Buying designer is a luxury that may not always be worth the price tag. Investing in high-quality, classic pieces is a long-term and sustainable way to shop, but it might hurt your wallet and take up closest space for perishable trends. Blowing a thousand dollars on a designer garment might seem totally worth it for the first few wears but the fleeting lifespan of trends mean it won’t be worth it if you think about cost-per-wear. The concept of fashion trends usually have a negative connotation, partially because of its short lifespan. As your clothing is a visual extension of who you are, it may be constantly changing with your mood. If you’re looking for that designer look but don’t want to shell out the cash, head to one of these stores for a designer dupe that will cost you way less!

As fashion is meant to be experimental, you can still rock new fashion fads without breaking the bank with these designer dupes all available for much less!

Zara

Fast-fashion retailers like Zara churn out designer dupes without compromising (too much!) on quality. Keep up with the trends as soon as they get off the runway with affordable spins on ready-to-wear. This blazer is akin to Jonathan Simkhai’s, as seen on celebrity Monica Rose.

Amazon

Amazon is also a great place to find affordable on-trend accessories with super-fast delivery. Get this budget-friendly bucket hat instead of spending 5x the price on the Lack of Color version.

Topshop

Topshop is another fab go-to for tailored pieces, especially for those who require specific tall or petite fits. A stylish suit that can be dressed up for work or a night out is a great option. Grab one in a bright colour or funky pattern without buyers remorse. This blazers pocket detailing is a more subtle version of Tibi’s signature reconstructed tailoring.

Mango

designer looks for less

Left: Mango, Right: SSENSE

Mango’s refined modernity means it carries styles akin to The Row, Chloe, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Manolo Blahnik, and so many more. Mango is known for its ability to fuse the latest trends with classic style while still maintaining high quality so you get more than what you pay for.

H&M

designer dupes

Left: Reformation, Right: H&M

Adopting the French girl lifestyle has been a cultural movement in North America over the past decade, and luckily, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. This H&M dupe has the same “je ne sais quoi” for about 90% less as this Realisation Par  dress. The red and black colour combo is more than a neutral, but is still totally wearable for most occasions. It’s fierce without trying to be, like every Francophile bombshell. Add a wing liner for a Bardot inspired look.

ASOS

designer dupes

Left: Reformation, Right: ASOS

Reformation Dress $248 USD – Dainty dresses are a year-round staple, just add tights or a leather jacket in the cooler months. Reformation is known for their light, girl dresses in an array of colours and patterns. You can spot a #refgirl just by her billowed sleeves and bustier waist-line. ASOS currently has the same silhouette for $18! You’ll be getting more out of your cost-per-wear with this delicate dupe.

Missguided

free things toronto summer

Left: J Brand, Right: Missguided

Celebrity-adored J Brand jeans collaborated with Steph Sheppard to create these ultra-luxe, ultra-sexy dark wash denim with lace-up detailing. If you missed the drop, or don’t want to shell over $300 for a pair of jeans, these Missguided dupes are just as hot. Wear them with your favourite tee or with a blazer for a more work-appropriate look.

Urban Outfitters

You’ve definitely seen these Jennifer Fisher mini Samira hoops before, particularly on style queen Hailey Bieber. These substantial hoops go with EVERYTHING and elevate any look to something street-style inspired. Add these Urban Outfitters dupes to your accessory collection to save on some serious cash while boosting your hoop game. Style with a hoodie and sweats or off-the-shoulder sundress.
