“Jumpman, Jumpman, they gave me my own collection,” as Drake famously says in his song with Future. The Canadian rapper is set to release his third collection with Jordan Brand on February 16th, 2018.

The relationship between Drake and Jordan Brand began when he signed a shoe deal in the winter of 2013 and their collaborative projects are some of the most coveted shoes on the market. The designs from the collection are inspired by the logo of Drake’s OVO brand, specifically the three major colours: black, white, and gold.

Image: October’s Very Own

The collaborative collections feature both apparel and shoes, and they release during NBA All-Star weekend, beginning in 2016 All-Star festivities in Toronto. The first collection featured the Air Jordan 10, the second featured the Air Jordan 12, and the upcoming third silhouette will feature the Air Jordan 8. There will be two colourways of the shoes as seen in the past, with one being white and the other being black.

Alongside the shoes, there are also two colourways of OVO x Jordan track jacket and track pants that will be released as separate items. The third collection will be available for purchase at the OVO stores and the Air Jordan store at 306 Yonge Street in Toronto.

2017 was one of the craziest years in recent memory for sneakerheads. All of the brands from the footwear industry stepped it up this year with the introduction of new technologies, execution of unique collaborative projects, and the return of many sought-after classic silhouettes. There were some amazing collaborations throughout the year with fashion designers, contemporary artists, musicians, retail boutiques, and even an owner of a buy/sell/trade store!

As difficult as it was to narrow down the ten best sneaker releases of this year, it was even harder to put them in order. Some shoes were more widely available, whereas certain ones were extremely limited and difficult to acquire.

Here are our ten best sneaker releases of 2017:

  1. Off-White x Air Jordan 1

Image: Instagram/@virgilabloh

Virgil Abloh, the man behind the luxury fashion brand Off-White, unveiled his collaborative project with Nike called “The 10” this year featuring his take on ten different silhouettes. 1. Kaws x Air Jordan 4

Image: Instagram/@kaws

American pop artist Brian Donnelly, better known as Kaws, is best known for his sculptures and toys, but it was his collaboration with Jordan Brand on a pair of Air Jordan 4s that received the majority of the attention. Kaws gave the Air Jordan 4 a facelift with a full suede construction and notes of his artwork throughout the entire silhouette.

  1. Sean Wotherspoon x Nike Air Max 97/1

Image: Instagram/@sean_wotherspoon

On Air Max Day 2017, Nike ran a campaign that gave twelve individuals from throughout the world an opportunity to create and design their own sneakers. Sean Wotherspoon, owner of Round Two, won the campaign with a hybrid design featuring a corduroy Air Max 97 upper with an Air Max 1 sole.

This all-black design with extremely limited availability was the most sought after release of ComplexCon and it instantly became the most coveted NMD Hu Trail.

  1. Off-White x Nike Air Presto

Image: Supply Store

Although the Air Jordan 1 by Virgil Abloh from ‘The 10’ collection took home the hardware for shoe of the year, the Air Presto was another highly coveted shoe from the collaboration. It followed the deconstructed theme of ‘The 10’ and it is arguably the second most sought-after pair from the collection.

  1. Adidas Yeezy Boost 700 Wave Runner

Image: Hypebeast

Kanye West was able to ride the wave of the dad shoes movement and released a stylish pair featuring the Boost technology from adidas. The Yeezy Boost 700 Wave Runner features vibrant colours and it is intentionally bulky by design, making it one of the most controversial sneaker releases of the year.

  1. UNDFTD x Nike Air Max 97

Image: SneakerNews

2017 was a big year for the Nike Air Max 97, celebrating its 20th anniversary, and it was celebrated through a collaboration with streetwear mainstay, UNDEFEATED. The first release of the collaboration saw two colourways of the Air Max 97, one black and the other white, featuring patent leather hits on the mudguard. The final colourway released at ComplexCon was the most coveted, featuring UNDFTD’s signature olive and orange colourway.

  1. Tom Sachs x Nike Mars Yard 2.0

How The Best Selling Shoes of All-Time Made a Resurgence in 2017
Here’s How Photographer; YouTuber Sean Go Buys Rare Sneakers
10 Great Gift Ideas for Your Significant Other

There is always a tough decision to be faced when buying a new pair of shoes. Do you go for the pair that is readily available that other people may have or do you go out to find a specific pair that will help you stand out? If you decide to go on the hunt for rare sneakers, where do you even start the search? Do you search for a limited pair that released recently or do you go hunt for a pair that released years ago?

We were able to sit down with Sean Go, a photographer and YouTuber, and spoke with him about how to get your hands on rare sneakers.

What are some of the rarest shoes that you own?

I’m the type that wears 99% of my shoes, so I tend to gravitate away from absurdly “rare” shoes that can either fall apart due to their age, or are worth the price of a new car. However, some of my personal gems in my collection include the Nike Air Max Lunar 90 “Moon Landing”, Air Jordan 10 “OVO”, Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 “Turtle Dove”, Nike Air Max 1 Atmos “Elephant”, and Nike x Off White Zoom Fly.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BbFSYkYBB0d/?hl=en&taken-by=sgo8

How were you able to get your hands on them?

I’m able to obtain my shoes through various means. Sometimes, this means being lucky in a store raffle, other times require that I camp out overnight in the cold, and in the worst case, I bite the bullet and pay a reseller. Luckily, I have friends both in the US and Canada that often look out for me and help me out when I strike out on my own.

Where would you search for your sought after grails?

I consider grails to be the one shoe I would keep if I was forced to get rid of all the other pairs in my collection. Currently, I already own my “grail”, which are the Air Jordan 3 ’88 “White/Cement”. It isn’t the most rare, nor is it worth that much on the secondary market, but it is a shoe that’s resonated with me since I can remember, and something I would hold on to over all the other more hyped sneakers that I own. In this case, I lucked out and grabbed them from Footaction, but if I did not own the pair today, I would search through consignment shops or sites (i.e. Flight Club & StockX), on sneaker marketplaces on Facebook, and attending sneaker conventions where rare shoes are often put up for sale.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTfwJyjDbvD/?hl=en&taken-by=sgo8

What are some of the best ways to find rare sneakers locally?

In Toronto, we have a few sneaker consignment shops, including Essential Toronto and Re-Run that stock some of the most sought-after shoes on the market. In addition, there are a wide variety of Facebook sneaker marketplaces (i.e. Toronto Shoe Game, Toronto Sneakerhead Marketplace, and Canada Sneaker Xchange) where every day people are able to post shoes for sale and trade. In addition, we are fortunate to have quite a few independent boutiques, such as Livestock, Capsule and Haven, which carry a lot of rare sneakers that people often camp overnight for, along with big-box retailers like Foot Locker, Footaction, and Champs.

What are your thoughts on sneaker purchasing apps such as StockX and GOAT?

I personally have purchased from both, and it’s a good method to feel assured that the product is going to be legitimate, without dealing with the risk or dangers of face-to-face meetups, and inconvenience of travelling to physically pick up the sneakers. However, coming from the US, these purchases are usually accompanied with duties due to the high price of these sneakers that we are importing into Canada. So with that said, I usually use StockX and GOAT as a last resort when I can’t find the shoe anywhere else in the city, and am prepared to pay the extra 30% or so on top of the purchase price for duties.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BY5xOWeD3Nh/?hl=en&taken-by=sgo8

Can you give us three pieces of advice on purchasing rare sneakers?

  1. Stay up to date on release information.
(i.e. which stores are receiving them, what time, raffle or first come first serve, etc.)
  2. Be prepared to put in work.
(whether that means lining up for hours, running from store to store to enter raffles, or being quick on your fingers to check out online, etc.)
  3. Missing out isn’t the end of the world – there will always be another “hot” shoe coming out sooner rather than later.

A fresh take on the classic 574 model, New Balance gave a modern update to the design with a sleek upper and some alterations to the materials that are used throughout the shoes. The New Balance 574 Sport is offered in numerous colourways and can be a staple in your rotation.

Nike Air Max 97 Ultra ‘17

Image: Instagram/@sidewalkhustle

Celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the original design, the Air Max 97 receives the Ultra update from Nike that features an overall lighter construction with the single layer upper. The Air Max 97 Ultra ‘17 features the same aesthetics as the original design in many original colourways with a modern twist.

Nike VaporMax

Image: Instagram/@misterqmart

The shoe that was unveiled by Nike during Air Max Day 2017, the VaporMax has been one of the hottest shoes of the year. The Flyknit upper combined with the exposed Air units on the sole makes this a truly interesting design that has become a mainstay in many collections.

Michael Jordan had a big impact on the footwear industry. You can say that he revolutionized it and completely changed the landscape of how sneakers were marketed and sold. He transcended the world of sports and became an international fashion icon with the help of his Air Jordan line, as well as his trademark Jumpman logo.

The Air Jordan line saw immense success as a performance product, but it also began tapping into the lifestyle market as people were wearing their Jordan shoes not only on the court, but on the streets as well. This had every other footwear company scrambling to find their own MJ throughout the 90s and early-2000s.

artists & lifestyle influencers

Image: adidas

We have seen a rising emphasis on the importance of artists and lifestyle influencers in sneakers, as athletes began taking a backseat in the footwear industry. Run-DMC and their contribution to this movement cannot be understated, as they hold a special place in history with what they did with adidas and the Superstars.

Some may say that the Artist’s Series collection by Nike featuring the likes of Futura, Stash, Pharrell, and ESPO was vital to this shift in the industry. Some may say that this shift occurred when Jay-Z and 50 Cent got their own signature lines at Reebok, the S. Carter and the G-Unit. There will always be those who say that nothing mattered until Kanye released his first signature silhouette with Nike.

artists & lifestyle influencers

Image: Complex/Reebok

Regardless of what catapulted this change in the influence within the footwear industry from athletes to artists, all that matters is that the change did happen. When Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Kanye received their signature line from Reebok and Nike, it was a very big deal to those who remember those years. Jay-Z and Kanye were the first non-athletes to get their own signature shoes at their respective brands.

Throughout this decade, we have seen many artists collaborating with different brands to help usher in this new age of sneaker culture that we are now in the midst of. We saw adidas working with artists such as Big Sean and 2 Chainz on classic silhouettes during their pre-Boost era, followed by their introduction of Kanye and Pharrell’s signature series during their Boost era.

artists & lifestyle influencers

Image: Jordan Brand

Jordan Brand is very well represented with Drake and his ever-popular OVO collection. Reebok has made a concentrated effort in gaining back traction within the lifestyle market with Kendrick Lamar and Future on their roster. adidas not only has Kanye and Pharrell on their roster, they also work with Pusha T on their EQT line and Desiigner on their XbyO line.

PUMA is one of the brands that is truly embracing this shift towards influential artists and it is safe to say that their hard work paid off. The Fenty by Rihanna collection is one of the best-selling collaborations on the market, and they also made a big splash with the signing of The Weeknd, who will be receiving his own signature XO collection. In addition to The Weeknd and Rihanna, they also have some of the most influential style icons, Kylie Jenner and Big Sean, as faces for some of their other campaigns.

artists & lifestyle influencers

Image: PUMA

It has been truly amazing to see the shift of influence in the sneaker industry and to witness the transformation of the culture from what it was many years ago. Call them musicians or singers, but at the end of their day, they are artists and these footwear designs can be seen as an extension of their artistic craft.

Our neighbours south of the border have shops such as Flight Club and Stadium Goods when it comes to finding those rare and limited edition sneakers. They even have apps and websites, such as StockX and GOAT, as trusted secondary marketplaces for those sneakers that you may have missed on release day. Unfortunately for Canadian shoppers, shopping at these outlets have become increasingly hard due to the value of the Canadian dollar and the potential 35% duty rate that we may face in addition to all other costs.

Canadian sneakerheads have been longing for a shop like Flight Club or Stadium Goods to open in the country, and soon they’ll have their wish granted with the upcoming release of Overdose Toronto. Also known as OD Toronto, you may have seen them on Instagram getting featured on Hypebeast or giving away rare collectibles on contests hosted with the likes of Modern Notoriety.

OD is gaining the reputation of “OD-ing” on their well-curated Instagram account, each post typically seen with a ridiculous stock of the most hyped and limited items, such as the KAWS x Air Jordan 4s and just about every highly sought after item from Supreme. They have it all from the best Air Jordan 1s, Yeezys galore, Bape NMDs, Acronym Prestos, and the self-lacing Nike Mag!

Their Instagram page consists of all original content made with the items that they have in their inventory, and it is safe to say that they will not only be one of the best stocked shops in Canada, but they will be in competition with other shops of similar caliber throughout the world.
