Amazon Prime Day is quickly approaching on October 8th and 9th, 2024! So it’s time to set your alarms and get ready to save! Even though the massive savings event isn’t (quite) here yet, we always like to fill our carts in advance so we can quickly check out when the time comes. Plus, there are already a ton of early deals to shop!
First thing’s first – What is Prime Day?
Amazon’s Prime Day is a two-day shopping event during which Prime members get exclusive access to millions (yes, millions) of deals on Amazon. Some notable participating brands include Paula’s Choice, Peloton, Ninja, Amazon (obviously), and so much more.
How to prep for Prime Day:
There are some simple things you can do in preparation for Prime Day to ensure you have the most successful shopping experience possible:
- Sign up to be a Prime member. In order to participate in Prime Day and all of its glory, you need to be a member. (You can sign up for a 30-day free trial if you’re not already signed up). After the trial, the membership is just $9.99 per month or $99 per year.
- Set up deal notifications. Prime members can set up personalized deal notifications to be notified when their recent searches and product views have deals, so you never miss a discount.
- Build your cart. In order to secure you’re best chances of snagging the items you want to buy on sale before they sell out, have them ready in your cart. This avoids last-minute scrambling!
- Take advantage of early deals. As we mentioned, a ton of items are already marked down on Amazon! Take advantage of these early deals to ensure you don’t miss out.

During the sale, you can expect to save on a ton of items, including electronics, fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and more! The sale event seems similar to Prime Day but runs for a full 5 days, and you don’t need to have a membership to partake. The sale is exclusively for Prime members, so if you aren’t already one and want to take advantage of some great deals, you may want to look into signing up. Although we don’t know for sure what items will be going on sale, we can look at trends from past years to make our best-educated guesses! In case you already forgot (as if!), Amazon Prime Day was just last week on July 15 and 16, and it seemed like everyone and their mother spent this two-day event doing some major shopping. Over 175 million items were purchased overall and if you can believe it, sales surpassed Cyber Monday and Black Friday combined. Not only were sales at an all-time high, but so were the savings as customers worldwide saved a total of a billion dollars on Prime Day. When it comes to savings and convenience, Costco and Amazon are both major players! However, it can be tricky deciding between a Costco membership or an Amazon Prime membership. Each retailer has its own list of perks depending on what you value most.
We decided to compare two of our favourite shopping hubs: Costco and Amazon Prime so you can discover which membership suits you best.

1. Membership Costs
In terms of the cost of an Amazon Prime or Costco membership, Amazon Prime costs $79/year ($39.99/year for an annual Prime Student membership,) while the Gold Star Costco card costs $60/year + tax. However, Costco also has an Executive Membership for $120/year that includes exclusive benefits, rewards, and product savings, which can be totally worth it depending on what you’re looking for. The one area where Amazon Prime does beat Costco with pricing is their payment options. While Costco is a one-time fee, Amazon also offers payments of $7.99/ month. For some people, smaller monthly payments are more appealing.

2. Prices
This likely doesn’t come as a surprise, but overall prices are cheaper at Costco. While Amazon Prime does get you discounts and free shipping on many items, Costco is known for their bulk pricing and is especially great for items in the household staples category. A Business Insider article states that Costco was better than Amazon almost 80% of the time. Although, pricing isn’t the only factor here. When it comes to convenience Amazon is definitely the strongest of the two.

3. Convenience
In recent years, Costco has started offering a limited selection of products online, but member prices still have to be obtained in-stores. Amazon Prime, on the other hand, is incredible if you do your shopping online. They offer a vast selection of items, free two-day shipping across Canada, free same-day delivery in Toronto and Vancouver, and free one-day delivery in select cities. Unlike Costco, items are delivered to your front door, whereas you physically have to go to the Costco store to obtain membership savings. Not to mention that Costco items are sold in bulk quantities, which sometimes isn’t necessary on certain items; you will definitely need access to a vehicle when shopping at Costco.

4. Other Benefits
One of the biggest defining factors when choosing a Costco or Amazon Prime membership are the additional benefits. The Costco membership is better for functional lifestyle benefits as it will give you access to using the chain’s gas stations, hearing aid centre, Costco Optical, and Costco Pharmacy.
Alternatively, the Amazon Prime membership is all about entertainment with its additional benefits. You’ll have access to Prime Video, Prime Music, and Twitch Prime. As you can see, the additional perks for each are very different — if you’re looking for efficiency and savings on things like gas, Costco is the clear win, while Amazon is much better for movies, music, and streaming.

In the end, either Costco membership (Gold Star or Executive) is the best choice for people who categorize savings above all else. It’s also suited to individuals who buy things in bulk. Therefore, if you live close to a Costco store and have access to a vehicle, there’s a high chance one of their memberships is the better fit for you. If you don’t live by a Costco and prefer the convenience of online shopping, fast two-day shipping, are an avid entertainment junkie and might prefer monthly membership payments over an annual fee than Amazon Prime is definitely the clear choice.

If you are an avid Amazon shopper there’s is no doubt that a Prime membership is worth it. With 10,000 + items available for one-or two-day shopping having a Prime membership makes shopping quick and convenient.
When chatting in our offices we found that some of the staff at StyleDemocracy HQ opted not to have an Amazon Prime membership due to the yearly cost of $79. In the past Amazon had only one option for a Prime membership in Canada and it involved a one-time upfront yearly membership cost which turned some consumers away.
It seems as if Amazon has heard our conversations ( we do have an Alexa in the office so it’s not a stretch) and has decided to launch a new monthly Prime Membership Plan.
The new plan will be priced at $7.99 and will give Canadians an alternative to the existing annual membership plan.
This monthly membership will allow users to use Prime as they see fit. For example say you know you only use Amazon during the Christmas season and back to school, you could choose to only activate your membership in the months of December and August.
A Prime Membership gives you more than just shopping benefits and includes unlimited access to movies and TV shows with Prime Vide and access to over a Million songs on Prime Music.
Not bad.

Starting at noon on Monday, July 16 and ending at midnight on Tuesday, July 17, Amazon Prime will hold the only global shopping event exclusively for Prime members. There are more than 1-million deals available, and deals have expanded to many countries around the world. Also known Black Friday in July, some Prime Day deals are already available. If you aren’t a member, rates to join were raised in May to $119 a year. First-time customers of Amazon’s Prime Now delivery service will get $10 off their first order, plus $10 off on a future order. Prime currently has more than 100 million members.
Amazon bought the Whole Foods chain last year for $13.7 billion, so members already get discounts at Whole Foods Stores year-round. For Prime Day, check out the “select deals” at Whole Food stores. If you have an Amazon Prime Rewards Visa card, you will get 10% cash back when you buy up to $400 from July 14-July 17, plus a $10 credit to use when you spend $10 or more at Whole Foods between July 11-17.
Some of the deals that are already available are $40 off Amazon Fire tablets and smart locks with cloud camera bundled to save you $70, and there is a $40 discount on the popular Kindle Paperwrite e-reader. There will be special discounts on Alexa-enabled products like Echo and Fire TV, 25% off furniture and home décor from Rivet and Stone & Beam, 20% off AmazonBasics, as well as discounts on personal care items, home security, baby lines, and more.
