Walmart Secrets To Know For Your Next Shopping Trip

Saks Fifth Avenue opened its doors at CF Toronto Eaton Centre and CF Sherway Gardens to eager luxury customers in 2016. Just a short while later, discount shoppers rejoiced with the opening of three Saks OFF 5TH locations at Vaughan Mills, Toronto Premium Outlets and the Outlet Collection at Niagara.

If you’ve never ventured into a Saks Fifth Avenue location, this high-end US department store is synonymous for its designer men’s and women’s fashions and prestigious customer service programs. Saks Off 5TH outlet stores, while not nearly as glamorous as full-priced locations, offer a wide-variety of brand name fashions at deep discounts of up to 70 percent off retail prices!

A post shared by Saks OFF 5TH (@saksoff5th) on

One brand. Two concepts. What is a shopper to do? Trying to decide whether you should plan a shopping trip to Saks Fifth Avenue or Saks OFF 5TH?

We’ve got a rundown of the differences you can expect to find when shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue versus Saks OFF 5TH.

Store Design & Layout

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Farrokh Mahjoobi (@farrokh_mahjoobi) on

We would be lying if we said that the atmosphere at Saks Fifth Avenue was anything short of breathtaking. The store’s design is modern, spacious and glamorous. Here, you will not find a single broken mannequin, mismatched shoe or unfolded shirt. The store is perfection, not to mention the lighting fixtures. When in doubt, look up!

On the flip side, the store environment at Saks OFF 5TH is bright, trendy and organized, but not at all intimidating. Departments are clearly labeled with hanging signs and cute neon quotes. Don’t forget to take a peak at the items lining the checkouts. Similar to a Winners store, this is where you’ll find unique trinkets and small gifts.

Customer Service

Google Maps/Wojtek Gidzinski

Need assistance? Saks Fifth Avenue is here to help. There are sales associates at every corner of the store waiting to serve you. We dare you to try picking up an item without having someone dart over to assist you.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we found that the availability of sales associates at Saks OFF 5TH locations were few and far between. While it’s understandable that not much employee assistance is required on the sales floor, we would expect to find all cashiers on deck to accommodate customers looking to speed through the checkout process.

The Perks

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Samantha Moore (@sama_moore) on

Being a luxury shopper of Saks Fifth Avenue does have its perks. This department store’s laundry list of premium customer services does not fall short. As a Saks Fifth Avenue shopper, expect to benefit from perks such as personal shopping and tailoring services. Visiting the CF Sherway Gardens location? Add some decadence to your shopping trip with luxury dining and the convenience of elevated grocery shopping.

Unfortunately, the shopping experience at Saks OFF 5TH does not hold a candle to the value-add you receive from shopping at the full-price department store. However, what Saks OFF 5TH lacks in perks, they make up for in price savings. You really do get what you pay for.

Let us get you hooked on the underwear brand, Parade, that went viral across social media this past year. The company has risen immensely in popularity since its launch in 2019, and for good reason.

Parade has created—dare we say it— the comfiest underwear, bras, and lounge, that we’ve ever felt.

Not only are the styles so classic sitewide, but incredibly comfortable and supportive too.

You know those days when you can’t wait to get home and take your bra right off? Well, you can kiss those times goodbye. With Parade, you’re not even going to notice you have a bra or underwear on because the material is seriously that luxe.

We got to try out both the cotton and lush rib material, and can’t decide which one is our fave. From essential tees to the must-have briefs, we were very impressed with how durable as well as versatile each piece is. The breathable fabric makes it easy to wear around the house and on the go.

Plus, the super-soft basics come in sizes XS to 3X, with continuous efforts to expand the size range.

Sustainable practices and materials? Check. Parade’s products are currently made of 80%-95% recycled materials with its goal to get to 100% by 2023 through switching to bio-based and renewable sources for elastane and spandex.

Check out the rundown of all of its eco-friendly manufacturing and fabrics right on the Parade site

Of course, we can’t forget about our SD Readers. We scored a discount code just for you. Use code STYLEDEMOCRACY at checkout to score 20% off your entire order (one per customer). The only thing better than treating yourself to the comfiest bras and underwear is getting them at a sweet discount, so get shopping!

Plus, for a limited time get up to 40% off sitewide and if you spend $200+, you’ll get a full 40% off your entire total. Don’t forget to stack our coupon onto that too!

Check out our fave products to shop at Parade!

There are tons of outlet stores popping up across Canada that promise amazing brands and even better discounts. Unfortunately, many of us live more than a stone’s throw away from the outlets we want to visit or end up driving the hour (or four) only to be disappointed by the selection.

Outlets tend to be messy, over-picked, and chaotic but our desire to score a discount outweighs all the cons — snagging a deal while shopping is our number one priority! While there are a number of ways you can save by shopping online at regular-priced retailers, we’ve found a number of retailers with online outlet stores that will help you save a couple of bucks while you’re shopping.

Here are online outlet stores to take advantage of.

The classic American retailer has its very own factory store online with clothing, footwear, and accessories for the whole family at a fraction of the price of its regular retail stores. 11 Classic Designer Items Worth the Splurge

There are some things in life that you should never purchase at full price. Why not save money where you can, and wait for deep discounts, sitewide sales, and deals? From tvs to couches to kitchen appliances, check out the products you’re looking for while enjoying the savings you deserve.

Here are items that you should never purchase at full price.

Electronics

Great prices on electronics like tv’s, laptops, headphones, and more, can usually be found at various stores like Costco, Best Buy, and The Source. Plus, electronic products are often the most discounted during major sale days like Black Friday and Boxing Day. You may have to wait a bit to score the item you’ve been eyeing, but it’s definitely worth it.

Home Decor

Changing up and adding some flare to your living space can get quite pricey. That’s why it’s best to shop the sale sections of home stores like Structube, or browse sites that offer lower prices throughout, such as Wayfair and Overstock.ca.

Instagram/@structube

Clothing

There’s always promotions happening on apparel sites, and some even have a spectacular sale section to browse through. When shopping for trendy clothing, it’s best to steer clear of the full priced pieces and find yourself ones on sale or less expensive alternatives. You never want to dish out a ton of cash on items that may not be on trend the next year. Sites like SSENSE, Gap, & Other Stories, and Hudson’s Bay, are where you can find stylish pieces for great deals.

Designer Handbags

Luxury items can seriously put a dent in your wallet, but what if I told you that they don’t have to? The key to more affordable designer handbags is to purchase them pre-loved, not at full price. Designer handbags typically never go up in resale value, unless you’re planning on breaking the bank with a Chanel or Birkin, it’s usually never worth it. Pre-loved items can sometimes be half the cost, while still being in great condition. Sites to shop are The RealReal and Rebag.

If pre-loved isn’t your thing, stores like Hudsons’ Bay, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Off 5th offer awesome discounts on designer items.

Furniture

Furniture can get quite expensive, especially if you’re redoing an entire room. Shopping at places that offer items for less, is a great way to start. Why pay the full cost for furniture if you can purchase it for less? Sites to keep on your radar are Bad Boy, Wayfair, and Overstock.ca.

Glasses

If you need prescription lenses, then you know how expensive those can be, so save money on the frames! Online shops like EyeBuyDirect.com and Clearly, are always offering some type of deal or a lower cost. The same rule applies with sunglasses as well.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by EyeBuyDirect (@eyebuydirect)

Dinnerware

If you don’t want to splurge on dinnerware, there are a bunch of sites to check out that have clearance sections on these products. For example, Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock.ca, and William Ashley frequently offer items at a discount, including popular brand names.

Appliances

Replacing or purchasing new appliances can be a pain, so browsing on online stores like Canadian Appliance Source, where you have the option of checking out open box products for extra deals or bundling products for a discount, can help save a lot of money.

OK – We just got insider knowledge that there’s going to be a limited-time eBay.ca sale, and we’re letting you know now! Dyson Supersonic refurbished hair dryers will be available for WAY less than you’d usually pay from April 29 to May 9.

Dubbed the “Tesla of hair dryers,” Dyson typically retails its Supersonic for $499 but with this deal you can get one for only $320. You may not know that eBay works with Dyson to sell its refurbished models for $399 on a regular basis (which will soon be even lower with this specific deal). All the refurbished models are tested to meet like-new performance standards and have a one-year warranty. It’s basically like buying a fancy new hairdryer but for LESS!

Readers can shop the sale at ebay.ca/dyson.

In search of lower prices and a wider selection, savvy beauty lovers can find various unique and high-demand items on eBay.ca – whether it’s the latest skincare fad or a must-have haircare staple. Beyond Dyson hair dryers, new beauty tools are always available on eBay.

Over the years I’ve worked with StyleDemocracy, I have become a big fan of warehouse sales. The deep discounts and the thrill of the hunt get my blood pumping and my adrenaline high, so when I was given the opportunity to attend the Estee Lauder and MAC Warehouse Sale in Toronto, I couldn’t say no.

The event happens four times a year (March, June, September and December), but tickets can be hard to come by – they are usually given to people associated with Estee Lauder: employees, companies, or clients. If you’re really eager to go, you can typically find tickets on Kijiji for around 20 bucks a pop, though it is frowned upon as tickets are not for resale. Fortunately, I was able to score my tickets from a friend who works in the industry and has been attending the sale for years.

The Estee Lauder and MAC Warehouse Sale happens at the Markham Fairgrounds, which was a bit of a trek (a 30-45 minute drive) for me as I was traveling from downtown Toronto. Once I arrived at the sale, there was a big line that moved fairly quickly. I only had to wait 30 minutes. Once inside the sale, it was even busier than outside. The sale took place in 3 buildings and each building held a different variety of products from brands like Mac, Estee Lauder, Bumble and Bumble, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Smashbox, Coach, Michael Kors, and more.

Despite the chaos, and to my surprise, the sale was pretty well organized. Gift sets, lotions, and boxed items are available for grab on the floor while items like eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner, lipsticks, lip glosses, and compacts were taped to tables for testing.

If you find something you like taped to the table, you write down the number (be sure to bring your own pen/pencil!) of the item and take it to a pick-up area where an employee will collect your items and put them in a sealed bag. If you change your mind about an item, you can take it to a sorting station where employees will collect the items you don’t want and reseal a bag with the items you do want.

At the sale, shoppers are allowed to spend a maximum of $600. I spent around $150 and walked away with more than enough! My purchases include an Estee Lauder Stay-in-Place Gel Liner (reg. $30, sale $9), an Estee Lauder Hydra Lustre Lipstick (reg. $25, sale $10), 2 MAC Lipsticks (reg. $20, sale $10/each), MAC Fluidline (reg. $19.50, sale $9), a Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss (reg. $20, sale $10), Smashbox ‘Rock a Legendary Lip’ Set (reg. $45.50, sale $30), and a Clinique 3-Set Cleansing Kit with travel pack (reg. approx. $95, sale $45).

So would I go back to the sale? Probably not. Overall, I was happy with my purchases (especially my Clinique 3-set Cleansing Kit,) and extremely impressed with how well organized the sale was, however, there are a number of reasons why I would not go back:

  1. Travel & time. For me, personally, the sale was a bit far. Without a car, getting to the Markham Fairgrounds can be a bit difficult. The savings & product selection would not convince me to travel the distance again. I found I was buying things just because it had taken me so long to get there and because I had waited so long.
  2. Lines. There are a lot of them. I’m talking lines to get into lines. Lines one after the other. Patience is a virtue.
  3. Product. Though there was a HUGE amount of product, I’m not as dedicated a beauty maven I once thought I was. My selection was limited as I don’t actually wear that much makeup, but true beauty addicts would have a blast.

I would suggest the sale to make up artists & addicts, anyone with a lot of patience, anyone looking to pick up Christmas gifts, and anyone looking to score deals on eyeshadow, lip and fragrance sets.
