It’s official, we have now entered the year 2023! As we get settled into the new year, it’s only natural to think about what’s to come. In terms of fashion, there’s a whole lot to look forward to. We’re currently in an era where the trend cycle is moving so quickly, it’s difficult to keep up and people have no choice other than to let their personal style shine through! Since virtually every style seems to be trending, people are simply picking and choosing which trends they choose to participate in. That being said, there are still some fashion trends that will have a brighter spotlight than others this year, and we’re here to show you which ones that will likely be taking centre stage.
With every trend in the books having its moment, people are turning to something relatively new and fresh in fashion. Futuristic fashion – think The Matrix and alien-chic. We saw something similar (but still very different) in the early 2000s when technology started to take over, it was very much so reflected in style. As technology continues to advance, fashion innovates alongside it with 3D-printed garments, accessories made out of glass, silhouettes reminiscent of space gear, and tons of silver and metal tones.
We’ve seen the sheer clothing trend in the past, and it’s coming back in a new elevated way this year! We can expect to see sheer, delicate fabrics with feminine design elements and patterns. We’ll also be seeing the use of sheer fabrics within non-sheer garments as an added touch of interest.
When you think of denim, you may not think of it as a trend as much as a staple basic. As much as that may be true, this denim trend is taking jeans to the next level. We can expect to see a lot of oversized denim, denim on denim, and basically every clothing piece you can put on your body, made from denim.
In 2022 cargo pants were definitely having a moment, and 2023 is taking that a step further with cargo-styled everything. Not only will we be seeing cargo pants, but also cargo skirts, tops, jackets, and more.
You either love it or hate it, but either way, you can no longer avoid it. Maximalism fashion has taken the world by storm this past year and it isn’t going to stop any time soon. The mix of colours, textures, and statement pieces all worn together in a seemingly unintentional way (but is in fact very intentional), is the vibe here.
Every year around the holiday season we see a spike in silver and sparkles within fashion. This year we’re expected to see the silver and sparkle trend go all the way into the spring and possibly beyond! Why not treat every day like you’re going to an NYE party?
Skirts in general are going to remain a big fashion trend this year, and long skirts in particular are going to be uber popular. You can tie this trend in with the others by sporting a long cargo or long denim skirt!
If you’ve yet to snag a pair of western boots, you may want to consider it! All styles of western boots have started to pop up everywhere and they surprisingly can be styled with basically anything, giving a very “model-off-duty” look. A bonus of this trend is that western boots can be worn throughout every season, so you’re sure to get good use out of them (that is, if you’re into this trend, of course). You can try to thrift this trend, invest in the iconic Ganni ones, or shop around for your perfect pair, as they shouldn’t be too hard to find!

We don’t know about you, but there are few things better than when two brands or individuals collaborate and drop an exclusive collection. And with the holidays on the horizon, there’s no better time to share with you some awesome new fashion collabs that are definitely worth checking out.
Whether you’re a fan of October’s Very Own, Roots, or both, OVO announced it’s launching a Fall/Winter 2022 collab with iconic Canadian retailer Roots to celebrate their shared Canadian heritage. The capsule is complete with varsity jackets, heritage hoodies, short-sleeve T-shirts, sweatpants, caps, and beanies. To further bring the collab to life, the brands brought on legendary Toronto Maple Leafs fighter, Tie Domi, to help promote the collection.
Garage has teamed up with Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Chlöe Bailey to launch the first collaboration of its kind with a musical artist. The collab, named B.DY, includes a variety of seamless knit tops and bodysuits designed to enhance your natural and unique curves. The fabric is buttery soft, smooth, sleek, and available in rich colourways. These are the perfect essentials for anyone’s closet and are versatile from day to night.
Joe Fresh has teamed up with Canadian lifestyle maven Jillian Harris to create a colourful collaboration with pieces for everyone. The collection includes over 20 pieces, including styles for your little ones so you and your minis can twin! Sizes are available in XS-3X for women, 2T-5T for toddlers, and S-XL for kids. Staying true to Jillian’s core values, each item was created with the environment top of mind, using fabrics such as recycled polyester and yarns, Primaloft fill and organic cotton.
JW Anderson and MGM have released a capsule collection inspired by the spine-tingling supernatural horror film Carrie. The collection features t-shirts, tracksuits, puffer jackets, and coordinating sets that resemble pajamas adorned with images of the lead protagonist of the film, Carrie White, played by Sissy Spacek.
Remi Bader, the plus-size TikTok star who first went viral for her “realistic” clothing haul videos, launched an inclusively sized collection, Remi x Revolve, which marked the first time the popular online retailer expanded past size XL. The online collection features “elevated and versatile” pieces for fashion-forward individuals, including dresses, skirt sets, tops, bodysuits, and more.
Vancouver clothing brand Brunette the Label teamed up with Canadian influencer Sarah Nicole Landry of The Birds Papaya to launch the “Romantic” collection, which features several mommy-and-me clothing styles including sweatshirts, bike shorts, T-shirts, and more — each piece featuring a sweet, all-over rose print.

Now that fall is officially here, it’s time to hit refresh on your wardrobe. Notoriously a fashion trend favourite, the fall season allows for creativity, while incorporating layers and weather-appropriate accessories. If your closet is in need of a much-needed revamp this season, you’ve come to the right place.
School is already in session, and one of this season’s biggest trends is a nod to school-girl vibes. Picture prim penny loafers with a pair of white socks, paired with mini skirts, loose-fitting jeans, or cargo pants for the ultimate influencer-approved look.
Metallic tones are no longer just for evening wear. This fall, embrace the bold trend by incorporating statement-making pieces into your wardrobe, including silver tote bags, footwear, outerwear, and even trousers. If you’re not quite ready to wear head-to-toe metallics, as seen on none other than Kim Kardashian, we suggest styling one metallic piece with black leather and white T-shirts for a chic look.
Easily the bottom of the season, relaxed-fit cargo pants are making a comeback, and we couldn’t be happier about it. From pants to skirts, this utilitarian look is making a statement for all of the right reasons.
While the corset may have first become popular in sixteenth-century Europe, they’re back in hot demand this fall season. However, this season, you’ll see corseted waists built into tops and dresses for an effortlessly sexy look.
While leather jackets are always in style during fall, this year it’s all about edgier and heavier styles. While you can surely pick one up from your favourite designer, you can easily hit up a local thrift store to find the perfect piece that’s it-girl-approved.
This is likely a fall staple piece you already have in your closet. But after being spotted on countless designer runway shows, it’s an item you’re going to want to wear a lot more frequently. Style your favourite simple white tank with denim or cargo pants for a casual day look to styling for a night out with a long skirt, the options are endless.
While no wardrobe is complete without a timeless blazer, this season is all about strong, powerful, oversized silhouettes. The best part about this trend is that it’s extremely versatile. Whether you’re heading to yoga in a matching workout set, to the office, or out for a night on the town, throw on an oversized blazer for an effortlessly cool look.
Nothing says ‘fall staple’ quite like plaid. This season, to give the traditional print some edge, try mixing it with fur, sequins, or silk for a bolder look. However, if you’re looking to ease into this timeless trend, try styling a plaid skirt with a turtleneck and a pair of boots for a timeless yet chic look.

Abercrombie & Fitch started out as a luxury outdoorsy brand in 1892. It mostly sold camping and hunting equipment for elite, upper-class men.
By ‘All American’, they’re of course referring to upper class, boarding school, waspy white kids. The women were thin and blonde and the men were tall, muscular, and fit. Instead of just selling clothes, they were selling an idea: if you wear A&F, you too can be popular, beautiful, fit, and rich, just like the people in the ads. Instead of looking up to an unattainable celebrity, they wanted people to look up to these attainable faces in their campaigns.

This ‘idea’ was represented by the “Hot Naked White Men” that adorned the shopping bags that high school girls would later cut up and paste to the inside of their lockers. It was represented by the staff that worked at the stores – they were never judged on their sales or their politeness to customers, only by their looks and being white.
By 2015, discrimination of race and size was seen as a “stupid business decision”. Abercrombie & Fitch was getting terrible press for the exclusionary tactics they prided themselves on for so many years and even lost a case in court for refusing to hire a woman who wore a headscarf. Something here needed to change.

Fran Horowitz replaced the white male CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch in 2017. Her goal was to “wipe clean” the brand’s history and start fresh as a brand that embraces everyone, including plus sizes. The “cool kids” that A&F once went after were now described as “anybody and everybody”. Today, tons of plus-size and POC influencers now call A&F one of their favourite brands.
“[Abercrombie & Fitch] didn’t invent evil. They didn’t invent class. They just packaged it.”

Things are no longer beachy-keen for Canadian bathing suit retailer, Swimco. The former shopping mall staple just announced that it’s closing after 45 years in business.
The company posted a notice on its website saying it “was unable to make a viable proposal…and is thereupon deemed to have made an assignment into bankruptcy effective October 10, 2020.”
Swimco started as a home-based, mail-in order business out of founder Corinne Forseth’s basement. The first store opened in Calgary in 1983. The chain was later passed on to Forseth’s daughter, Lori Bacon.
“[They] mastered the art of personal service catering to women,” said retail real estate specialist Michael Kehoe. (They also sell men’s swimwear, FYI.)

Another reason to love the brand: Swimco was all about feeling beautiful in your body the way it is.
“When you walk into a Swimco store, you see REAL models that look like the people around you — because being aspirational isn’t just about what happens on the surface, it’s also about what happens beneath it,” its website says.
But COVID hit North America at the worst time (Spring Break — RIP beach vacay) for Swimco.
“Swimco was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down the cruise ship industry and international vacation travel. The loss of the local iconic Swimco brand, a family owned and operated legacy fashion retailer, will be mourned.”
All 20 of Swimco’s brick-and-mortar locations across Canada have closed, but you can still shop its online store. All sales are final and you won’t be able to use your gift cards (*sad face*), but you can take advantage of the 45% off sale. You know, in case you want to lounge around your house in a bikini. It sells bathing suits from a ton of different brands, like Adidas, Roxy, and Polo Ralph Lauren, in addition to its own Swimco line, so there’s plenty to choose from.
You can also enjoy free shipping on orders over $150, so you should definitely stock up for your post-lockdown, pandemic-free tropical getaway. Make sure you get your order in fast so you don’t miss out.

It may seem like many fashion brands nowadays position themselves as size-inclusive, but the truth is, very few of them offer a decent range of clothes for curvy bodies. And options are even more limited when it comes to activewear.
One of our favourite affordable clothing brands Joe Fresh is the latest retailer to extend their size range and become more inclusive with their stunning new activewear line.
Starting today, the new collection is available online and in-stores and caters to sizes 0-22.
“We knew that an extended size range was something that our customers had been looking for, and we are excited to now offer even more great styles and exceptional value in a broader assortment to meet the needs of more women,” said President Ian Freedman.
The activewear collection designed with a combination of classic items, everyday essentials, eye-catching prints and vibrant colours takes into consideration smart design and construction for more body types.

Earlier this month, Michael Kors unveiled a new womenswear capsule collection. The bold monochromatic collection is the first in a series of limited-edition capsules from Michael Kors. Drawing inspiration from the ‘80s art scene in New York, the designer decided to put a graphic spin on his jackets, shoes, and bags by decorating the pieces with eye-catching street style inspired prints.
“I started my company in 1981, at a time when uptown and downtown were really colliding. Uptown girls partied downtown at the Mudd Club and Club 57. Artists like Fab 5 Freddy and Jean-Michel Basquiat showed their work at PS 1, and yet you’d still be just as likely to find their signatures on the side of a building in the LES or your subway car. Today, that mix of high/low is everything.” said Michael Kors
To take the celebration of the newest collection to the next level Michael Kors teamed up with Candy Pratts Price, who has served as fashion director at Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Style.com, to create special window displays for select locations. These Instagrammable displays feature a floor-to-ceiling screen print of Michael in his aviators, rotating mannequins wearing the graffiti product while snapping selfies of themselves in front of the backdrop.
The new capsule collection is available at Michael Kors stores Canada-wide. Take a look at the lookbook and a few of our favourite pieces below:
