2019 saw no shortages of fashion trends. While some were questionable, others were made popular with the help of celebrities or took off completely on their own. But which trends outranked them all?

At the end of last year, marketing analytics software brand and trends data provider SEMRUSH released a report that tracked what the top Google searches were across 140 countries. Through this data, they were able to determine exactly what the most sought after styles of the year were.

Take a peek at the top 10 fashion searches from 2019 below and take note — we wouldn’t be surprised if many of these trends carried into 2020.

Oversized Sweaters

Oversized sweaters are the epitome of comfort, so we’re not surprised that it was the number one searched fashion item of 2019. The trend saw a 400% increase in searches over the last year and we don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Leather Trench Coats

If 2019 is an indication of anything, it’s that ’90s trends are here to stay for a while. One of the most searched nostalgic styles was the leather trench coat, which was loved by celebrities like Kaia Gerber, Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian, and more.

Linen Blazers

Another one of the top 2019 fashion searches was linen blazers. The trend actually tied second with leather trench coats in popularity and would make an awesome addition to your wardrobe, no matter the season.

Leather Coats

In 2019, it seems that leather was one of the top textiles on everyone’s mind! Leather coats made the cut for the most popular 2019 fashion searches. If you’re currently on the hunt for one, be sure to check out our top places to shop leather jackets in Toronto.

Bike Shorts

Another ’90s trend that exploded in popularity in 2019 was the bike short. While the trend snuck up on us a few years ago, we predict that it’s going to go even more mainstream this year.

Fur Jackets

Interestingly enough, despite a growth of 82% in vegan-friendly fabrics, animal-based fabrics are still coming up as some of top 2019 fashion searches. This year, fur jackets saw over 200% growth in searches.

Midi Slip Dress

We don’t foresee slip dresses going anywhere soon — you can pick them up at almost every popular retailer. This top 2019 fashion searches item saw a spike of 175% in growth.

Snake Print Shirts

Animal prints were on everyone’s radar in 2019, and it’s no doubt that snakeskin was one of the most popular ones. From boots and handbags, to body suits and pants, shirts were the true champion for the print.

Oval Sunglasses

Tiny sunglasses aren’t for everyone, but the ’90s trend had a 124% growth in online searches and is a favourite of cool girls like Millie Bobby Brown, Kendall Jenner, and Bella Hadid.

Floral Shirts

As Miranda Priestly says, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” While the trend might not be earth shattering in the fashion community, that just means that it’s a classic staple to add to your wardrobe for seasons to come.

Just like fashion, the beauty world is also is cyclical in nature and as the new year approaches, it’s time to start preparing for all the upcoming beauty trends. If the runways and social media have been any indicator, 2020 is going to be an incredible year for beauty trends. We broke down 10 of the biggest trends to keep an eye out for so you can stay ahead of the biggest trends of the new year.

Euphoria-Inspired

HBO’s hit show Euphoria wasn’t just a hit with Gen Z-ers this year, it was also a huge hit in the beauty world, too, as proven by numerous runways at New York Fashion Week in September. Makeup artist and founder of Hey Babe Cosmetics, Nicole Abbott, predicts that Euphoria-inspired makeup will carry over into 2020. Prepare to see more glitter and shine and super-bright hues whether on the lips or eyes, similar to what you might have seen in the 70s.

The No-Makeup Look

Glowing skin and the no-makeup look will transfer into 2020, according to Abbott. Hugely popular throughout 2019, the easy, versatile, and universally flattering look will thankfully stick around in 2020, so you can (thankfully) say goodbye to the time-consuming trend of contouring.

Neon Eyeliner

In addition to 70s glam, we’re also going to see 60s-inspired, neon eyeliner in bold greens, aquamarine, and yellow, as seen during Spring/Summer 2020 runway shows of Helmut Lang, Versace, and Nicole Miller, among others. This is a quick and easy way to add a subtle touch of colour to your eyes without going overboard.

Coloured Mascara

In 2020, you’ll be able to give your go-to black mascara a break and opt for something more on the playful side. If you’re ready to make people do a double-take layer on a deep-blue, green, or bright-pink for a bold look.

Vinyl Lips

Slick, translucent, and vinyl-looking lips were all the rage during fashion week in both New York and Paris, as endorsed by some of the world’s biggest fashion houses, including Sies Marjan, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel.

90s Lipliner

While we saw 90s fashion have a major moment in 2019, we’re going to see the return of an incredibly popular beauty trend from that decade gain popularity once again in 2020: visible lipliner. Already frequently seen on Kim Kardashian West, Gigi Hadid, and Beyoncé, simply

line your lips using a shade that’s only slightly darker than the lipstick you’re using, preferably in a nude or brown shade.

Pastel Eyeshadow

A trend we’re excited to give a try is pastel lids. This look is soft, playful, and downright dreamy. You can stick to using just one colour, or you can get really creative and opt for a multicolour look like this.

Eyebrow Lamination

Thankfully big, bold brows aren’t going anywhere in 2020. Only in the new year, we’re going to more laminated brows, which are a semi-permanent treatment that delivers the look of microblading, without the use of needles. Basically, the microblading alternative fills the gaps in brows and gives them the illusion of fullness, in a fast, noninvasive way.

Floating Eyeliner

Your eyeliner doesn’t have to glide along your lash line anymore. Rather, you should line outside of the lines to recreate this trendy, floating look that’s incredibly easy to master, as seen above on Shat Mitchell.

Nail Polish On Boys

Gone are the days of solely only seeing women and guys in punk bands rock bold statement nails. In 2020, we’re going to see a lot more men sporting nail polish as they’re becoming even more expressive and experimental with their style. We’ve already seen the likes of Pete Davidson, Harry Styles, Marc Jacob, Anwar Hadid, and ASAP Rocky rock nail polish, and hopefully, we’ll start to see a lot more men on board.
