Did you always know you wanted to be a dentist?
Yes, since I was little. I remember telling my parents when I was in first grade that I wanted to be a dentist. I had no back up plan, every decision was made thinking about how to reach my goal.
Where did you go to school?
I went to the University of Detroit Mercy.
What is it that attracted you to dentistry?
My mom is a true dental phobic. As a child I used to go to her dental appointments with her and I became fascinated by all things dentistry. Our dentist was so gentle and calm. He really took time to make sure my mom was comfortable which was really nice to see as a child.
Why is dentistry so important to you?
It’s truly the perfect amalgamation of health and beauty. To me, there’s really nothing better than seeing people smile confidently. To know that I can transform someone’s confidence like that is so empowering.
What is the most common misconception about dentists or going to the dentist?
It’s a myth that no pain means your teeth are healthy. Also, if someone tells you there’s a quick fix for a dental issue, it’s probably too good to be true.
What should someone expect at their first visit?
I have spent a lot of time curating the first visit. Patients come to see me and they want to feel confident that they are in the best hands. That really can’t be accomplished by flying into the room for 10 minutes. I spend a full hour with my patients. We take images, review medical/dental history, complete a thorough exam, come up with a treatment plan, and a lot of time is spent educating patients. All of this takes time. It’s also really important to have a full hour with Tanya or Jasmine (our Dental Hygienists).
“Cleaning” doesn’t simply mean scraping the teeth, we assess the gums, determine where and how much build up there is, if gums have bleeding issues, or how much staining needs to be polished, etc.
The list is endless of things we are evaluating and looking for. When you have really skilled practitioners it should feel seamless but make no mistake, we are evaluating things from the moment we start talking to you.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding thing by far is when patients tell me they actually look forward to coming in. I can’t tell you how satisfying that is for me.
What led you to opening up your own practice? What was the experience of it like?
My previous job was at an office that was bought by a corporate dental company. I am not interested in that kind of work environment at all. Ultimately, it is a business BUT there are patients behind every decision that is made. When one or two people are in charge of those details, it shows.
What’s your advice to someone looking to get into dentistry?
Find a dental office where you can shadow a dentist and really spend some time there to see if you like it. I truly enjoy going to work everyday. I feel very proud of what I have built. For me, it’s about connecting with people and that is a huge aspect of dentistry that is often overlooked.
Your studio is so cute! Why was it important to you to design an aesthetically pleasing dental studio?
I really wanted to create a space that was warm, inviting and beautiful. I went to about 20 different offices before realizing I needed to ditch the conventional “dental office” design and go with my gut. I pulled inspiration from design magazines like Elle Decor and scoured the internet for photos of chic hotels and restaurants. I wanted to make sure there was a great selection of books and magazines about art and inspiring people instead of a TV playing anxiety inducing news, especially these days.
I bought unique pieces from local stores in the neighbourhood and chose Toronto-based pieces for the space. I really love interior design and I felt like this was my opportunity to truly create a space that not only I would want to go to everyday but that patients would appreciate.
What’s a typical day like for you?
I start my day around 6:45am. My son, Nico, gets up around 7:30am. It’s such a pleasure getting him up, he wakes up so happy, it’s impossible not to be in a great mood after hearing his giggles! I am always at work 30 minutes before my first patient so I can grab a coffee and sit down with my front of house team, Michelle and Natasha. We are always, always reviewing and making sure we stay on top of literally every detail. Patients are taking the time to come and see us so we need to be prepared BEFORE they come in. I generally see patients all day long and eat lunch answering emails and organizing my never ending “to do” list.
I wrap it up around 5:30pm and head home so I can spend as much time with Nico as possible before he goes to bed. Luckily, my husband loves to cook so I usually get out of that! After he goes to bed I answer more emails and get organized for the next day. It’s quite hectic and doesn’t leave much time for my patient husband, but it won’t be like this forever. This is the reality of opening a business and having a baby in the same year. I am putting in all the really hard work now so that I can enjoy my family in the future.
Who are some of your inspirations/role models?
My parents and other female entrepreneurs. I feel like all I see around me are incredible trailblazing women, it’s amazing!
What’s a fact that might surprise other people?
I am an anxious dental patient myself!
