It’s always sad to see a retailer go, especially a Canadian retailer that we grew up with.
As reported, home decor chains Bombay Company and Bowring Brothers filed for creditor protection earlier this year. As a result, store closing sales have been happening across Canada.
Bowring, which was founded in St. John’s by clockmaker Benjamin Bowring in 1811, has been trouble for a little while. According to CTV News, back in 2014, the chains were placed under court protection from creditors and given time to develop a new business plan. But over the years, the houseware retailers were unable to pull themselves out of the slump.
While we hate to see another Canadian retailer go — we said goodbye to Jean Machine earlier this year — luckily, we can still support Bombay and Bowring by shopping their sales.
We dropped by the Yorkdale Shopping Centre to see what the Bowring store closing sale had to offer.
Right now, everything in-store is 20-50% off. While we can’t be certain, history shows us that liquidation sales typically start with the smallest discounts and get deeper and deeper as leases end.
A quick browse of the store revealed that at this point, most items are marked at 20% off, with a few 50% off items — like wine glasses — sprinkled across the store.
The offerings at the Bowring closing sale are vast.
Items featured in the sale include picture frames, mirrors, holiday decorations, vases, glassware, tableware, pillows, throw blankets, and much more.
If you’re looking for gifts for a holiday or wedding, Bowring is a pretty good place to start looking! Just note that because it’s a store closing sale, returns and exchanges likely won’t be allowed.

Right now, there are currently no end dates for the Bowring Brothers and Bombay Company store closing events.
Canada-wide sales started at the beginning of November, so it’s likely that the sales will run through till the end of the year.
If 20-50% off isn’t a deep enough discount for you, we suggest holding out a little bit longer. Just remember: the best of the best always gets taken first, so if you see something you like, it’s best to grab it now.
