It’s official! The Hudson’s Bay Company has partnered up with the Toronto Raptors for a multi-year deal.

HBC is now going to be the Official Style Partner of the NBA team.

The partnership is said to be four years long, so we can expect a ton of co-branding during the basketball season as well as ‘take-over’ nights in which Hudson’s Bay will host the Raptors home games at the arena.

There will also be a major emphasis on supporting the Hudson’s Bay Charter for Change, an HBC Foundation initiative which works with partner organizations including MLSE Foundation

Now for the even more exciting part. There will be an exclusive product collab line that’ll offer collector-worthy pieces, in which net proceeds will go towards Hudson’s Bay Charter for Change. We can’t wait to see it!

Hudson’s Bay has gone to court due to the newer lockdown restrictions that shutdown retail spaces in select Ontario regions.

A lawyer for the Hudson’s Bay Co., Jonathon Lisus, states that the company’s decision to go to court is due to the confusion that regulations are forcing some retailers to close while keeping others, with similar inventory, open.

Jonathan Lisus actually explained that the province’s regulations make no “rational distinction” between the HBC department store and other big box and discount retailers that are allowed to remain open.

He also claimed that there are an abundance of chain retailers that are still open that are very similar to Hudson’s Bay. Although places like Wal-Mart and Costco so sell a bunch of groceries and fresh produce, companies like Dollarama are allowed to remain open and only sell bagged candies and canned food. This is where the frustration lies.

Lisus said in a release that, “Hudson’s Bay is the only entity that has the industry classification of department store general merchandiser … that is excluded by this regulation.”

Along with Hudson’s Bay, around 50 retailers have banded together to sign a letter to Doug Ford, Ontario’s Premier. The letter explains that the new policy has pushed consumers to shop at big-box and discount stores, rather than supporting others.

HBC has officially asked the court to review Ontario’s decision to temporarily close down non-essential retailers in select regions.

UPDATE: The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has since dismissed Hudson’s Bay request to reopen and operate as an essential service during lockdown.

With another day comes another retail news headline and today it’s all about Hudson’s Bay Company.

The famed Canadian retailer announced yesterday that they’re shuttering all Home Outfitters locations and it’s speculated that Saks Off Fifth could be next.

With 37 Home Outfitters locations across Canada, there has been no official date as to when those closures will take place or how many jobs will be lost. What we do know is that there are around 700 employees at Home Outfitters.

HBC did release a statement from their CEO, Helena Foulkes saying, “We know this news is difficult for our associates. We are grateful for their ongoing efforts to serve our customers and we will work to find opportunities within HBC for impacted team members where possible.”

What does this mean for Saks Off Fifth locations? HBC is currently coordinating a review of the 133 Saks Off Fifth stores to scope out the highest performing locations. It’s speculated that this review could result in approximately 20 stores being closed.

One thing we know for sure is that with so many Home Outfitters and Saks Off Fifth locations across the country, the sales are sure to be pretty great. Keep your eyes peeled for a #SaleSpy!

It has not been a good few years for major retailers in Canada. It seems ever since Target shuttered across Canada, the traditional retail climate has been cooling off, to say the least. The Toronto Star is reporting that The Hudson’s Bay Company could be the next major Canadian retailer to succumb to defeat as the retailers “appear to be in the kind of trouble from which most enterprises don’t recover”.

According to The Star, HBC shares have dropped about 60 percent since 2015 and the retailer has posted losses close to a billion dollars in the past six quarters.

HBC isn’t anywhere close to dead yet and still has an opportunity to right the ship. Industry insiders are pointing that in order for HBC to survive they will have to have an agile retail-focused business plan that caters to an upper-middle-class clientele.

To recapture this clientele HBC will have to follow the route of retailers like Holt Renfrew who focus more on experiences, creating event-like atmospheres for high-end brands. Customers have to be lured to stores with the expectation of receiving something they can’t get behind their computer screen.

We would love to hear from you. Do you shop at The Bay? What do you think The Bay can do to keep afloat?
