Being a fan of makeup nowadays can end up being a rather expensive habit. We love Sephora, and there certainly are a few products from there that are simply irreplaceable. But there are also a few products that can be swapped for the much cheaper drugstore version, without compromising quality.
The options of makeup looks from these coloured NYX eyeliners are literally endless. Which ever mood you’re feeling, there’s a colour for that too. The product is smudge-proof and long lasting. All for under $12, what more could you ask for?
This foundation is easily the most diverse out of all the drugstore foundations you can find. It’s oil-free, smooth in texture, lightweight, controls shine, blurs pores, and comes in 16 different shades. It also has the ability to be layered for full coverage or used sparingly for lighter coverage.
Although a tad pricier than most drugstore foundations, this one is easily worth the cost, and still saves you on spending $50 or more on high-end foundation. The great thing about this product, is its stay-power. It’s everything you love about a lightweight foundation, but with an added advantage: 24-hour coverage. Additionally, it provides a hydrated, dewy, radiant finish, to keep you looking fresh all day. Click here to read more about the best drug-store foundations on the market.
Many colour correctors are on the expensive side for such a small tube of product. This NYX formula is just as long-lasting as higher end with the drugstore makeup price. There are 24 shades to choose, find your perfect match and fall in love with this concealer.
This bronzer competes with the best of the best, in my books. For $7.98, you have a bronzer that will last you months. This product has a strong pigment, so a little goes a long way. On top of that, it is extremely versatile. If used with the correct brushes, and paired with just about any highlighter, this bronzer can be used for contouring as well.
When it comes to mascara, it can actually be more difficult to find one that doesn’t get the job done. But nonetheless, it’s easy to convince ourselves that spending $30 on high-end mascara makes a big difference, even when it may not. This mascara could easily compete with most mascaras, high-end and low-end. It’s clump-resistent, fragrance free, flake-free, and comes in both waterproof, and regular.
Many don’t even bother using primer, because it’s just another thing to spend money on. But this primer will definitely change your mind about that, without breaking your budget. For $12.99, you can smooth the look of your skin under makeup, prevent makeup from settling into fine lines and wrinkles, and minimize the look of pores.
This liner is an absolute must-try. It features a sleek, fine brush for precision, to help get your wings right on the first try, and a glossy, jet-black finish.
NYX is by far the most superior and affordable drugstore makeup brand. Nearly every single one of their products is solid enough to go toe-to-toe with your high-end faves. But nothing compares to their Hydra-Touch Powder Foundation. This hidden gem is a weightless pressed powder that offers buildable coverage, for any occasion. It can be added on top of foundation to set your makeup, and provide extra coverage with a smooth finish, or it can be used alone for gentler coverage.
This NYX brow pencil will make you never want to spend $27 on an Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ever again. This ultra-fine-tip mechanical brow pencil fills brows in, creating the illusion of actual eyebrow hairs, for a natural finish.
Choosing a highlighter can be tough since they all look so similar, so we tend to gravitate to the more expensive ones from brands we can trust. But this one is bound to change your mind. For just $4, you can choose from four different shimmery shades, and achieve a glow that could even compete with Fenty. Plus, it’s infused with Vitamin E and hydrating jojoba, rose hip, sunflower, apricot, and grape oils to nourish your skin.

I can still remember the first time I went to the drugstore to buy a foundation. As I was about to enter high school I had zero ideas of what I was supposed to be looking for, but after spending the entire summer flipping through Cosmo and seeing tons of glossy Covergirl and Maybelline ads for foundation, I knew I wanted to give the bottle of liquid goodness a try. I can recall how overwhelmed I felt walking down the beauty aisle and seeing that while there were plenty of brands to choose from, the selection of shades were dismal. To my surprise, some brands only carried ten shades at the most.
As someone with an olive complexion, it was easier to find a shade that worked for me, but that wasn’t the case for so many others. Thankfully things have improved in the beauty industry and progress has been made when it comes to inclusivity and diversity.
Today, you can walk down any beauty aisle and find an expansive range of foundation shades from brands that are truly making an effort to be more inclusive by appealing to all skin tones.
And while ten or so foundation shades used to be adequate, thankfully, 30 or more is the new norm.

10 Canadian Beauty Brands To Add To Your Routine
Your makeup routine doesn’t have to break the bank!
While there are some weeks where, sure, the total worth of cosmetics on my face seeps well into the hundreds, there are also weeks when finances may be a little tighter than usual, and I’m not able to restock on my usual high-end products. But this doesn’t mean that the quality of my makeup application completely diminishes!
My experience working in beauty PR and as a certified makeup artist has led me to confirm that a lot of what you pay for when purchasing cosmetics is the branding! The price of a product doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality of the product or tool, and many drugstore products are made by the same manufacturers of high-end beauty products.
Fenty broke the internet when Rihanna released 40-shades range of foundation. I couldn’t wait to support her mission to diversify the beauty game, but I have to tip my hat off to Maybelline. Out of all the drugstore brands, I can say they’ve always had one of the widest range of shades in the drugstore market.
I’m extremely picky with my foundation, and when I’m trying to save, the Maybelline SuperStay Full Coverage Foundation is the only drugstore foundation that I feel comfortable running in and out of Shoppers to grab in a hurry. This is a fantastic dupe in terms of coverage, colour, and longevity. And it’ll save you a whole lot of cash, too!
If you’re a fan of the seasoned MAC Prolong Wear Concealer, then you’ll love the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer while saving 20 bucks! The liquid-to-creamy concealer provides great buildable coverage and a luminous finish. I like using this to brighten my under eye area. Like the Prolong Wear, it lasts for hours without creasing!
This isn’t the last time you’ll see Maybelline on this list! I told you, it’s definitely one of my favourite drugstore brands. I’m absolutely in love with one of their newest products: SuperStay Full Coverage Powder Foundation.
For years, I was willing to splurge the $60 on BECCA’s Perfect Skin Mineral Powder because of how difficult it was to find a shade deep enough to use as a contour for myself. It was a little costly considering I was using such minimal product on my face to fake some defined cheekbones. Then all of a sudden — poof! BECCA pulled my beloved product from its roster. Maybelline’s new launch of SuperStay Full Coverage Powder comes just as I needed to re-up, and it’s available in an extensive range of shades. The full coverage foundation has an awesome powder-to-creamy formula that is super blendable with a matte finish. Thanks, Maybelline!
When it comes to finishing touches, highlight is almost a necessity to any makeup obsessed doll! Sometimes its use is as minimal as using it for the teardrops of your eyes or the tip of your nose — why not save $39 on this step if you can?! I found the Wet ‘N Wild Highlighting Powder to be an exceptional dupe to the BECCA highlighter. You can easily get that blinding shine that BECCA’s offers by wetting or spritzing your brush before dabbing the powder, and VOILA —shine bright, girl.
I’ll be honest… Typically, you’ll find me with false lashes on — either lash strips or extensions. So, mascara is one product where I opt for a cheaper alternative quite regularly. I’ve been using the iconic Maybelline Great Lash since my high school days, and it’s yet to disappoint! In fact, it only seems to upgrade with new additions to its collection. I find that when I reach for the Blackest Black Maybelline Great Lash, I can’t even tell the difference between using a high-end mascara like MAC’s In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash. If you’re a lash addict like myself, save the additional $25 for your next refill!
A classic red lip is a staple beauty accessory, and I’ve sworn by MAC Ruby Woo for nearly a decade — it’s definitely my most recommended red lipstick! There’s something about a bold, matte, blue-toned, red lip that just gives me life. Maybe it’s the fact that the blue-base makes my smile extra pearly white, or that a red lip compliments nearly any outfit.
I rarely stray away from MAC Ruby Woo but I was actually pleasantly surprised with another of Maybelline products: SuperStay Matte Ink liquid lipstick. This dupe blesses you with a flawless matte and intense colour at half the cost! I rarely need to reapply with this lippie as it inks your lip for up to 16 hours.

What Maybelline’s New “Made For All” Lipstick Looks Like On 3 Different Skintones
One thing everyone can love about the beauty industry is its move towards inclusivity and diversity, especially in terms of shade ranges.
While a mere 10 colours or so used to be adequate, 40+ is the new norm.
Ever since Bad Gal RiRi stepped into the market, makeup lovers everywhere have been rejoicing — no more painstakingly mixing shades together again…because who has time for that?
Now, we are truly spoiled as the foundation arms race hits its peak, with some brands unveiling 50+ shades — and in a range of prices to boot.
Instagram/@maybelline
Maybelline has to be one of the best drugstore brands out there, not only creating holy grail products, but also wide shade ranges. The Fit Me foundation has a total of 40 shades and will cost you less than 20 bucks, proof that you can find the perfect shade, even on a budget.
Instagram/@Morphe
Morphe gets major brownie points for its balance of selection, quality, and affordability — plus the brand just opened two Canadian brick-and-mortar stores: one in Mississauga and another in Edmonton! Its recently released 60-shade foundation range sits at a reasonable price point of $24 and features six different shade levels, each with 12 different hues to match your cool, warm, neutral, or olive complexion.
Instagram/@fentybeauty
No listicle featuring inclusive beauty brands is complete without the OG, Fenty Beauty. Rihanna and her magnificent 40-shade foundation line forced beauty brands to start thinking outside of the 10-shade box. The Pro Filt’r foundation will always be known as the game changer, not to mention, it actually works to provide flawless coverage, too.
Instagram/@makeupforeverofficial
Makeup Up Forever’s Ultra HD Foundation might be pricey, but it’s one of the most popular foundations at Sephora, with 4,600+ five-star ratings and a boasted about natural finish. Clocking in at 40 different shades, it is definitely worth it if you’re in the mood to splurge.
Instagram/@esteelauder
Estée Lauder is one of the older players in the game, so it’s refreshing to see the brand keeping up with the times. For the Double Wear Foundation they did not 40, but 56 beautiful shades for every skin colour out there. This is a great full coverage foundation for those with combination or oily skin, and it’s also an Allure Best of Beauty award winner.
Instagram/@covergirljamaica
CoverGirl is another affordable drugstore brand that has upped its game by adding a 40-shade foundation range. Sticking true to its brand DNA, historically, CoverGirl’s campaigns feature women of all complexions — CoverGirl was also one of the first makeup brands to feature a male spokesperson. While prices between retailers may vary, the Trublend Matte Made foundation can be found on Amazon for just $11.94.
Instagram/@coverfx
While the Power Play Foundation by Cover FX is in no way cheap, the luxury product has a dedicated fan base and claims to be good for almost all types of skin (combination, normal, oily). The 40 wide shade range is meant to be good for shine control and is a lightweight alternative to some of the heavier, full coverage foundations out there.
Instagram/@maccosmetics
While MAC might not be the OG in shade ranges, the brand is still a boss, being a favourite amongst makeup artists for many years. Most recently, MAC became available at Sephora (yay!) and extended its shade range to feature 60 different varieties. If you’re looking for professional quality, the Studio Fix Foundation has great value.

In a time where 40 or more shades of foundations is the norm, diversity in shade ranges for beauty companies is expected… Not only in foundations, but other coloured products as well.
And just recently, Maybelline — the maker of many drugstore holy grails— launched a collection of lipsticks that are meant to be flattering for all, no matter the complexion.
With seven lipsticks in the collection, affordably priced at around $10.99 per shade, our team at StyleDemocracy wanted to put Maybelline’s claim to the test.
(Left to Right) Blair Stutz, Sosa Eholor, Amanda Phuong
A natural beauty skeptic when big promises are made, I initially didn’t think each lipstick shade would look good on me, let alone all of us. I was quickly proved wrong because not only are all of these lippies perfect for our skin tones but they all worked for me.
Maybelline clearly knows what they’re doing because these super pigmented lipsticks are hydrating and they went on so effortlessly. Bonus points because the colour didn’t bleed at all so you won’t even miss your lip liner! — Blair Stutz (@blairalex), Editor & Community Manager
I was actually delightfully surprised at how the shades all looked on all of us! I could actually get away with sporting these lipsticks without wearing a lip liner… But for my melanin babes, a nice chocolate brown lip liner would be the perfect addition to these fabulous lipsticks!
My fave shades on my complexion were Red For Me, Pink For Me, and Mauve For Me — Sosa Eholor (@dolledbysosa), Digital Marketing & Advertising Coordinator
Like Blair and Sosa, I was shocked to see how great each of us looked in every single colour, especially since we all have such different complexions.
While there are some shades in the collection that I don’t see myself wearing day-to-day, I wasn’t mad at how any of them looked. In fact, I love the idea of universal drugstore lipsticks, especially since you typically can’t test them out in store — it ups your chances of walking away with something that’ll look flattering when you get home!
My favourite shade was Spice For Me, a cinnamon-brown with a little more oomph than your average neutral. — Amanda Phuong (@amandaphuong), Director of Digital Marketing

Wouldn’t it be great if you could spend a little less time in front of the mirror getting ready in the morning, clear some space on your bathroom counter and maybe even save some money along the way? Say hello to multitasking beauty products.
When have you actually had the luxury of being able to do just one thing at a time? Probably not that often. We’re a generation of multitaskers; we watch Netflix while we cook dinner, we answer emails while brushing our teeth, we call our mothers while commuting home from work – we do it all simultaneously. And our beauty routine should be no exception.
From lipstick that doubles as blush to moisturizer that becomes primer, multitasking beauty products are perfect for those always on the go. Consider these products your secret allies, ready to save the day. Here are 8 of the best multitasking beauty products that are sure to save you time.
Benefit’s Benetint is a go-to among makeup experts and beauty lovers alike. It’s a kiss-proof and smudge-proof sheer tint that gives you a perfectly flushed look. It’s rose-tint provides lips and cheeks with an innocent yet provocative glow that will keep everyone guessing.
Arguably NARS’ most iconic invention, The Multiple is its cream-to-powder multipurpose stick for eyes, cheeks, lips and body. You can literally do a full face of makeup with just this stick. It’s quick and easy to apply with its creamy texture and sheer colour to create fresh, glowy effects anywhere and everywhere.
Created back in 1930 by Elizabeth Arden herself, this award-winning cream does more than just hydrate skin. It can soothe sunburns, rehydrate chapped lips, heal rough elbows and calluses, keep eyebrows in place, make your eyelids shiny and even maintain the health of your cuticles. There are so many different ways to use this classic cream.
Hairspray is a lifesaver, but not just when it comes to the matters of your hair. No eyebrow gel? Spray on a toothbrush and tame away. Fashion emergency? Spray it on the ends of a run in your tights to stop it from spreading. Static cling? Spritz on areas of your skirt or dress that are bunching. Using a flexible hold hairspray option ensures little residue and no crunchy aftermath.
Contouring has never been so quick and simple. Maybelline’s Master Contour V-Shape Duo Stick creates the illusion of shape and highlight in just two easy steps. Apply and blend the dark shade along the jawline and the hallows of your cheeks for structure then use the light shade to enhance the high points of your face.
Loose, colourless powder can be used for much more than blotting shine. First off, it’s like the Magic Eraser of makeup, toning down bronzer, blush or even eyeshadow if you’ve applied too much. It can also help to blur the edges of a smokey eye, matte your lipstick, can thicken lashes between coats and even be substituted for dry shampoo in a pinch.
If you’ve only been using your eyebrow pencil for your brows, you’ve been underestimating its power. With a creamier eyebrow pencil, lining your lashes is just the start. Scribble it all over your lids for a cream eyeshadow effect or you can blend it along your cheekbones for a little bit of contour. Eyes, brows and contour all in one.
MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish is a luxurious pressed powder with multi-mineral complex that adds highlights to literally anywhere you want. This velvety soft powder has a radiant finish and comes in six glowy shades. You can use it as a highlighter on your face or body, on your cheeks as a soft-focus blush or blend eyeshadow looks.
