Reuters is reporting that Guess’ co-founder, Paul Marciano has resigned as the company’s executive chairman after a committee completed their investigation into allegations of improper conduct.
Although there has been a history of alleged improper behaviour, the catalyst behind Mr Marciano’s departure was famous model/ actress Kate Upton who tweeted that Marciano used his power to harass women. After the allegations from Upton in February Marciano took a step down from his day to day responsibilities.
Although Marciano stepped down, Reuters reports that the investigative committee concluded that the allegations which included inappropriate texts and comments could not be corroborated. The committee did conclude that in certain situations Marciano used poor judgement in communicating with models and photographers.
Guess did pay out $500,000 in non-confidential settlement agreements to 5 individuals who made claims against Marciano.
Guess appointed Paul Marciano’s brother, Maurice Marciano as current chairman of the board.
Yesterday, Apple posted a formal letter officially apologizing for tinkering with the performance of older iPhones and their batteries. Last week it was revealed that Apple slows down the performance of older iPhones. After their latest iOS update, Apple explained that they were trying to extend the life of older iPhone batteries.
“We’ve been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process. We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize. There’s been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we’re making.
First and foremost, we have never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades. Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that.”
In the following part of their post, the tech giant dwells deep into technical details. They give a long description of iPhone battery functions and performance. Apple goes on to explain that downloading the new update (iOS 10.2.1) will improve your battery life during heavy use. In an effort to appease customers, Apple will offer a $29 battery replacement for a full-year starting in January 2018. While users will still have to cough up $29, it’s better than the $79 USD usual cost for a battery change. If you have an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE, you can consider getting your $29 battery upgrade.

Working a retail job is hard. You work long hours, often while the rest of the world is on their leisure time. Weekends are non-existent, holidays are spent serving and folding clothes and you often work for lower end wages. One of the perks to working for a retail chain or store is the fact that you often get generous staff discounts. While some see it as a great benefit, others see it as just another way to keep money within the company.
Staff and employee discounts could be under attack as the latest version of the Canada Revenue Agency’s Tax Folio advises employers that “when an employee receives a discount on merchandise because of their employment, the value of the discount is generally included in the employee’s income,” with the value of the discount assessed at “equal to the fair market value of the merchandise purchased, less the amount paid by the employee,” unless the discount is “available to the public or a segment of the public, at some point during the year.” The change will essentially mean that the government plans to tax things like a small discount off for a shoe salesperson, to a tax on a meal discount for waitresses to a tax on a free gym membership for trainers.
CTV News is reporting that some Conservative MP’s and business lobby groups are accusing the Liberal government of targeting low-wage retail employees with new rules for employee discounts. The new change to the policy is expected to take place as of Jan 1st, 2018. Critics of the new policy state that this new policy targets people who are on the lowest rung of the economy. In addition to that, it means that local business owners will have the headache of tracking all employees discounts and taxing them appropriately.
