June means that Pride Month is here, and if you would normally be participating in all of the fierce festivities, know that you can still take part in a virtual way! It’s just been announced that cannabis retailer and culture shop, Friendly Stranger is putting on a virtual drag show this month.

The show will be taking place on June 16 at 8 P.m. EST and all funds raised will go to Glad Day Lit’s Emergency Survival Fund which directly supports LGBTQ2IA+ artists, performers, and tip wage earners who have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.

Instagram/@the_friendly_stranger

“Community and advocacy have been cornerstones of the Friendly Stranger brand since 1994 when our original cannabis accessory store opened on Toronto’s Queen Street West. With the recent launch of our flagship cannabis retail store at 501 Church Street we wanted to find a way to give back to the Village community and figured with pride month what better way to do that than celebrating one of the aspects of what makes this neighbourhood so vibrant and unique,” said James Jesty, President of Friendly Stranger Holding Corp in an email.

“We are thrilled to partner with Brock, Brooke, and 12 of Toronto’s most exceptional Queens to help raise funds for the members of the Village community who have lost work due to COVID-19.”

The show will be hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race finalist, Brooke Lynn Hytes and the first openly gay professional hockey player, Brock McGillis.

Because this is a virtual event, Friendly Stranger has set up a unique Go Fund Me page, with a recommended payment of $10 to view the event and it will be live on Friendly Stranger’s website for 30 days following the broadcast to continue the fundraising efforts.

The broadcast will also show support for other local Church Street businesses like  Craig’s Cookies, Crews and Tangos, Woody’s, and The Well through organic placements and even great prize packages.

This year’s Pride is a special one as it’s the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. These riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement. Every June, around the world, people come together to celebrate their LGBTQ+ community. But this Pride is more than just rainbows, a parade, and a party. It has been about the celebration of life and the fight for human rights and equality. Which is why brands are trying to put their money where their mouth is this month when it comes to showing up for the LGTBQ2+ communities.

Here are 6 brands who are showing support this Pride Month.

Bud Light

Bud Light is partnering with the Canadian-based human rights organization to pledge up to $100K toward Rainbow Railroad’s work to help persecuted LGBTQ+ people escape harassment and violence. By donating up to $1.45 for every limited-edition case of Rainbow cans, the beer company hopes to help Rainbow Railroad, assisting in its efforts to help people flee state-sanctioned persecution and find pathways to safety.

The Drake Hotel

On Monday, June 17th, The Drake Hotel hosted 86’d Mondays alongside Danielle Finestone of T.O. Foodies. For this event, they partnered with queer craft vendor Pink Market to showcase LGBTQ artisans. While 86’d Mondays are typically free to attend, this time, funds were collected at the door and by selling raffle tickets, to give away a donation to SOY Toronto, a program for LGTBQ2+ youth ages 29 and under. How rad!

IKEA

pride month toronto

Instagram/@ikeausa

IKEA recently announced that it’s recognizing Pride Month in a few different ways in store. But the one that has people talking? The release of a limited edition kvanting bag in the colours of the rainbow flag. The idea of the bag was actually pitched by a Canadian co-worker who came up with the idea to merge the iconic frakta bag with the colours of pride, and the rest they say is history. All profits from sales of the bag will be donated to Pflag – Canada’s national organization that offers peer-to-peer support for those within the LGBTQ2S community.

Consonant Skincare

pride month toronto

Consonant Skincare

For fans of Consonant, you’ll be happy to hear that the lip conditioner Peace, Love, Lip is back. The best part? Being sold on a limited run, the conditioner is benefitting Bill 7 Award Trust, a Canadian charity that provides scholarships to disadvantaged LGBTQ students pursuing post-secondary education. When purchasing the conditioner (which comes in three separate pricepoints: $7, $12, or $20) beauty buffs can pick how much you want to donate — love it!

As part of its new program, Because Two is Too Few, Lyft is the first rideshare app in Canada and the U.S. to offer a range of optional pronouns to include transgender and non-binary riders. But that’s not all Lyft is doing this Pride Month! For every ride taken during Pride, the company will be donating $1 (up to $5,000) to Casey House, Canada’s first and only stand-alone hospital for people with HIV/AIDS. For those who want to support the initiative and use Lyft, use code PRIDEYYZ19 to get $5 off your next two rides to or from Pride Toronto between June 21st and 23rd.

Skittles

pride month toronto

Instagram/@tofu.tits

Who doesn’t want to taste the rainbow? Well, during Pride Month, Skittles is hoping you’ll do just that. For the first time ever, the brand is removing its signature rainbow colouring from its packaging and candies. A portion of the sales from these limited edition packages will help the three LGBTQ2+ summer camp programs that Skittles has partnered with: Camp Rainbow Phoenix in Ontario, British Columbia’s CampOUT, and the Youth Project in Nova Scotia. Plus, on June 22, the brand is helping four LGBTQ2+ couples get married in first-ever Skittles Hall of Rainbows but none other than Preacher Shangela of RuPaul’s Drag Race — can I get a HALLELOO?!

Bold Collaboration Between Designer Alexander Wang and Trojan Condoms
How I Got My Job As The Director Of A Popular Toronto Art Gallery

Protect Your Wang! An unusual and bold collaboration between designer, Alexander Wang and condom maker, Trojan to honour Pride Month.

Did you ever wonder what the world’s most luxurious condom would look like? While Taiwanese-American fashion designer Alexander Wang has not reinvented the condom, he’s included a branded Trojan in his Protect Your Wang capsule, launching today. The collection, available in Wang’s Soho flagship store in New York City, with some items available online, also includes socks, hats, bandanas, and T-shirts. Each item is labelled with “Protect Your Wang.”

Alexander Wang and Trojan Condoms today unveil a limited-edition “Protect Your Wang” capsule collection as a continuation of the brands’ commitment to supporting the LGBTQ community and celebrating Pride. The capsule and condom is now available in the link in our bio and at our SoHo, New York flagship and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the LGBT Center of New York to support the organization’s sexual health programs. To celebrate #ProtectYourWang, we invite you to join us at #NYCPride2018 where we will be part of the march in a custom-made Alexander Wang x Trojan Condoms float.

A post shared by ALEXANDER WANG (@alexanderwangny) on

Wanting to do something special for Pride, Wang contacted Trojan last year, and they came up with a limited-edition capsule collection to promote safe sex. Part of the proceeds will go to the LGBT Center in New York towards sexual health education programs.

To 34-year-old Wang, who is from San Francisco, Pride is an event that’s been part of his whole life. “That celebration of optimism and bringing people together not only for what they have in common but how they are different. I love that message,” he said. Pride has always been one of his favourite moments of the year, and he wanted to create products that would engage his friends and fans to support initiatives he is passionate about.

The designer also designed a ‘Protect Your Wang float, which will be debut at the New York City Pride March on Sunday, June 24. “I can’t wait for everyone to see it on the streets of New York,” he said.
