This month, the ROM will be presenting a fashion exhibit called “The Cloth That Changed The World: India’s Painted And Printed Cottons” for the first time in 50 years. The exhibit opens on September 12.
It explores India’s gorgeous textiles and prints from long, long ago, all the way to what artisans are creating today.
Dr. Sarah Fee, who is the exhibition’s lead curator and the ROM’s Senior Curator, Global Fashion & Textiles said in a press release, “India has given the world many extraordinary fashions, but none so influential as its painted and printed cottons, known as Indian chintz. These beautifully coloured and patterned textiles shaped global human history, art and industry in ways that continue to influence us today.”
Can’t make it in person? Check out ROM at Home for the exhibit events that you can view in the comfort of your own home.

Over the past few months, frontline workers have helped keep our cities running. While we’ve been doing our part by social distancing and staying home, they’ve been supporting us at hospitals, grocery stores, and beyond. If there’s anyone that deserves a special treat this summer, it’s them!
Many businesses have shown their appreciation by offering free meals, access to activities, and more, and now a popular Toronto museum has something to give back to those on the front line, too.
The ROM is offering this as a huge thank you to those individuals who have put their own health on the line during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Frontline workers that will get special, free access include emergency services, health care, grocery store workers, city operations, social services, public transit, and delivery services.
If you are classified in one of these categories, take some me-time for yourself and immerse yourself in the 40 amazing galleries and collectons that the ROM has to offer.
To reserve a visit, frontline workers can book a timed ticket by emailing the ROM’s contact centre at info@rom.on.ca or calling (416)-586-8000. And it doesn’t have to be a solo visit! You can invite a few of your social distancing bubble pals, too. Each timed ticket includes spots for up to three guests.
Areas around the museum have strict limit capacities as well as marked pathways to comply with. Feel safe on your outing to the ROM so be sure to follow all of the rules, and of course, have lots of fun!

The Royal Ontario Museum has been changing its look for years. Its Crystal addition was greatly criticized when built 10 years ago, and ever since the ROM’s façade has had some serious renovations. However, the construction of the newly announced outdoor plaza and performance space is a project strongly backed by the city and critics. The Helga and Mike Schmidt Performance Terrace and the Reed Family Plaza, which will be completed by early 2019, will spread over 5,500 square feet beside the ROM’s new entrance. This creative enterprise is part of ROM’s Welcome Project, which will improve access to the museum and strengthen its role as an indispensable hub for Toronto.
Designed by Toronto architect, Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontini Architects, the open air performance terrace will host live musical and theatre performances, while the elegant plaza space will be beautifully landscaped and provide visitor seating for people to gather and relax.
Lead donors are Helga Schmidt, and Nita and Don Reed. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are now taking another important step in our revitalization plans by animating the space around the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal on Bloor Street,” said Josh Basseches, ROM Director & CEO. “The addition of the Helga and Mike Schmidt Performance Terrace, and the Reed Family Plaza will create a seamless link between the Museum and Bloor Street and serve as a welcoming space that brings people together in the heart of the city.”
The first stage of renovations was completed in December. This included fixing the façade on the Queens Park side and the re-opening of the Weston entrance doors. The performance terrace will be on the NW corner of the Museum overlooking Philosopher’s Walk.
The project will deepen the ROM’s connection with the community. During construction, both the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal Entrance on Bloor Street and the Weston Entrance on Queen’s Park will be open.
