If you’re not picky about brands and are looking to save a few bucks, keep your eyes peeled for Walmart’s generic label called Great Value. The retailer has a generic product for pretty much anything you can think of from food products and toiletries, to tissues and sandwich bags.

Prices ending in a 1 or 0 are final sale

When looking at Walmarts prices, there are some hints to whether or not you’re getting the best price they’re going to offer! According to The Krazy Coupon Lady, Walmart gives markdown indications in the price tag. If the price is ending in a 7, it is said to be the original price, with no markdown given — yet. If the price is ending in a 5, it’s possible that’s the first markdown given to that product, so you’re getting a deal but might want to wait around a little longer for the last markdown, which is said to be prices ending in a 1 or 0.

CBC is reporting that Walmart Canada pulled a line of women’s T-shirts from their website after receiving multiple complaints that the shirts and their product description were offensive and sexist.

According to CBC, the shirts were sold on the site by third-party retailer IceJerseys. The tees were created in 2010 by Arizona sports apparel company Sauce Hockey. The former Arizona Coyotes hockey player, Paul Bissonnette, a Canadian, even held a stake in the company when the line was launched.

“I realize that some of the company’s references used [with] T-shirts in 2010 were offensive to women and I sincerely apologize for that,” Paul Bissonnette said in a statement. “I was young and immature but I’ve moved on and I in no way support those references now.” Apparently, he parted ways with the company three years ago.

“The descriptions included tales of female groupies who serve as sex objects for hockey players and enjoy a golden shower.”

“We sincerely apologize for any unintended offence this has caused our customers,” said Walmart Canada spokesperson Anika Malik in an email. “The descriptions accompanying these tees do not represent Walmart’s values and have no place on our site.”

It seems the current owners of Sauce Hockey are also shocked over the descriptions.

“It’s offensive and sexist. There’s no question,” said Daryl Jones, one of the company’s investors. The company says it has reached out to Amazon, which still has some of the T-shirts, along with the product descriptions on its U.S. site via a different third-party dealer. Apparently, Amazon told CBC News it was investigating the matter.”

She’s super into you at first, but when things go sour, she ends up with your teammate via the waiver wire. Before you know it she’s thru the four forward lines and half way thru the top D pair and it’s only November…”

In a committed effort to lose its image as a ‘basic’ clothing retailer, Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, will launch its most ambitious clothing launch in years on Thursday. Copying rivals Amazon and Target, the Arkansas based chain is determined to become a destination for trendy clothing with its four new private label lines for women, children, and men. Prices will range from $5 to $30 (U.S.).

According to Walmart, this effort aims to respond to their customers’ wishes for smarter and more stylish fashions, such as ruffled items and skinny jeans. One of its new clothing lines, Time and Tru, will focus on women who want to polish their overall look; another line, Terra & Sky will provide clothing for plus-size women; their new Wonder Nation line will cater to children; and its private brand, George, will sell men’s items, but only in the U.S. This spring, Walmart’s revitalized website will focus on fashion and home design, with the goal to increase sales above 9% in 2018. Current Walmart labels, such as White Stag and Faded Glory, and George’s women’s clothing in the U.S., will be discontinued. In addition, other upgrades are being implemented, such as inspiring store displays, upgraded clothing departments, and fitting rooms. Walmart says the move is in response to customer requests for affordable stylish clothing.  Essentially Walmart wants to do what Joe Fresh and Loblaws started doing 10 years ago.

Launching new clothing lines can be risky, as discounter Walmart learned in 2005. Their upscale Metro 7 collection, advertised in Vogue, failed with their customers. However, Walmart is more confident this time around as this launch started with the focus on their customers.

Walmart is hoping to emulate their main competitors, Amazon and Target, who greatly boosted their profit margins with their private label clothing brands by eliminating the middleman and keeping exclusive.  Amazon is on target to become the largest U.S. clothing retailer, raising its market share from 6.6 % to 16 % by 2021.

In recent years, Walmart has been trying to change their image. They gained a negative reputation as the anti-worker company that valued profits more than anything else, and for putting mom and pop stores out of business. They have spent millions recently to rehabilitate their image, improving customer service, and adding training and education programs, plus higher salaries for their employees. In their attempts to be a good corporate citizen, they now participate in humanitarian efforts, starting with participating in clean up efforts after Hurricane Katrina. It is ironic that e-commerce and online sales sites, such as Amazon, are now being blamed for the retail apocalypse.

There are two kinds of people in this world: self checkout people and regular checkout people. For those of us who can’t seem to get out of the grocery store fast enough, Walmart just introduced a new technology that allows shoppers to checkout in just mere seconds.

Called, “Scan and Go,” shoppers pick up a portable scanner upon entering the store and scan the barcode of their items before putting them in their cart. Once they’re done shopping, the scanner tallies their total, and the customer can either pay at self checkout or with a cashier.

The new format allows shoppers to bypass the majority of the checkout process, making it the fastest self checkout technology yet. While currently only being tested in Ancaster, Ontario, Walmart plans to unroll the technology at 20 more Canadian stores.

Jeff Doucette of market research company Field Agent Canada tells CBC News, “People’s patience for waiting is declining rapidly. It’s like, why would I go to Best Buy and stand in line for something when I can just order it and it will show up tomorrow?”

There are even stores in the US where the portable scanning system has been refined into an app. Customers can both scan and pay for their items and then only need to show their receipt to an exit greeter on their way out.

With self checkouts machines in stores totalling 255,000 in 2016, it’s no doubt something an increasing number of people are gravitating towards, and the retail conglomerate aims to eventually bring the app to Canadian shoppers.

While some people are worried about it reducing jobs and the need for cashiers, Walmart claims that Scan and Go and the app aren’t meant to be replacements. There will always be a group of consumers who desire a self-service experience and others who will prefer to check out the old fashioned way.

The software also isn’t capable of price checks or price matching, not to mention it can malfunction. So although Scan and Go is a step towards further automatization, we’re still a long ways away from grocery stores being completely run by computers.

What do you think of Walmart’s new technology? Will it making shopping more efficient?
