Some people seem to have a talent for finding gems on Etsy – those unique, made-with-intention pieces that really stand out, whether we’re talking clothes, jewellery, homewares, or baby toys. There are well over 2 million Etsy sellers currently peddling their wares on the online marketplace. Don’t spend hours sifting aimlessly; save time and find exactly what you’re looking for with the help of these Etsy shopping secrets!

Keep reading for Etsy shopping secrets that you need to know!

Use The Advanced Search Filters To Narrow Down Your Results

Don’t overlook the many advanced fields you can use to weed out all the finds you don’t want. The search functionalities on Etsy are tailored specifically for each category of goods you’re shopping for, so you can select your price range, shop location, handmade or vintage, colour, delivery type, special offers, and a bunch more. Know your criteria for perfection and get super granular.

Also enter descriptors into the text box that capture the essence of the style you’re in search of, for whatever item you want—such as bohemian, 90s, androgynous, steampunk, etc. as opposed to the item name. Sellers will also often include a few adjectives in item names for SEO purposes.

Make Lists Of Favourite Items And Shops

You can use Etsy to make dream boards and wish lists – like Pinterest, but a little more practical. Favourite any shops and items as they catch your eye and you can pull them all up at once so you don’t lose track. That ottoman you fell in love with the second you laid eyes on? Favourite it so you can reconsider next payday. The cocktail dress you’d be able to use during wedding season? Don’t let it be the one that got away. You can also create lists of items to organize your finds and also share them with others.

Suss Out Your Sellers

Etsy attracts indie makers and small business owners who pour passion into their products and you can generally tell from their presence on the platform. Definitely read reviews of your sellers’ products, and you can also see how quickly they respond to customer inquiries, how many items they’ve sold, and how long they’ve been on Etsy. This should give you a strong idea of who’s behind the products you’re considering buying.

Follow The Etsy Blog

On the Etsy blog, you’ll find features of exceptional sellers, shopping guides, best-of roundups based on different themes, and more. This is a quick way to get to know the Etsy community. Search for the categories you’re interested in and find out who’s an Etsy champion.

Also, keep Etsy-loving influencers on your radar across social media for inspo. Scroll through hashtags like #etsyfinds #etsylover #etsystyle on Insta — you might find your new informal style advisor.

When you’re in the mood to scroll, browse the trending now page to see the sellers that are really getting noticed across all categories. You won’t find the most hidden of the hidden gems here as this is a roundup of the most popular shops in each category, from DIY to family to fashion. Instead, you’ll definitely find some well-loved, top-rated shops that you can’t really go wrong with. If you’re new to Etsy, this is a great place to start.

Message Sellers

If you scroll down on a specific listing, there will be an option to “message seller”, or if you click on a seller’s profile, you can message them there too! Sellers are generally more than happy to answer questions and give you the info you need to know. Trust is big when it comes to selling things online, and your seller should understand that. So, if you have any questions or price concerns, chat with a seller and get your questions answered before making a purchase.

Give Reviews

As important as is it to read reviews, you should give them, too! It’s a common practice for sellers to give a discount code after a positive review – it isn’t guaranteed but it’s a nice thing to do anyway.

Shop Local

When a seller is local to you, Etsy will state “Local Seller”. Not only does this allow you to support those within your area, but you may even be able to save on shipping this way. If the seller doesn’t offer free shipping and they’re local, send them a message and see if they’re open to a public meet-up! A way you can search for sellers within your area is simply to type in what you’re searching for and, next to it, write your location.

Download the Etsy App

If you want to shop comfortably from your phone, downloading the Etsy app is your best bet! You can do everything you can do on a desktop, but in a format compatible with your phone. Plus, you can turn on notifications to get important updates!

It’s hard to believe this picturesque, 20.5-hectare ravine-lined park exists in the heart of the city. Near Yonge and St. Clair, David A. Balfour Park is one of the largest – and most stunning, green spaces downtown, which was recently completely revitalized and newly opened to the public. There are fountains, reflecting pools and gardens, and creekside trails that lead into the ravine and connect to the Kay Gardner Beltline Trail. It’s got everything you need to experience the beauty of the season, right downtown.

Glen Stewart Ravine

Within walking distance of busy Queen Street East and Kingston Road in the Beaches, an elevated boardwalk runs through 1.3km of a secluded, leafy forest, where red oak and maple trees blaze red and orange in the fall. The Glen Stewart Park trail may be short in length, but it includes more than a couple of sets of stairs, so if you’re looking to break a sweat as you admire the fall foliage, this is where to head.

Scarborough Bluffs

Fall is here, and it’s the perfect time for a day trip out of the city. Whether you’re looking for a seasonal outing with the fam or a wholesome way to spend a Saturday or Sunday with pals, these fall fairs in the GTA have what you need to get into the fall spirit. Bundle up and set out for some pumpkin-picking, treat-sampling, photo ops, and memory-making.

Here are some fall festivals in the GTA to make a day trip out of this fall.

Waterford’s Pumpkinfest

Every year for 40 years, the town of Waterford (just over an hour’s drive from Toronto) transforms for Pumpkinfest. Most houses here go all out with spooky decor, making it a true spectacle. The festival features some fairly epic jack-o-lantern towers, a marketplace, midway, parade, soap box derby, beer garden, and more. The event runs Oct. 14 – 16th.

Port Elgin’s Pumpkinfest

If you’re up for a bit of a trek (2 and a half – 3 hours drive from Toronto), Port Elgin’s Pumpkinfest offers a true fall festival experience, complete with giant vegetable competitions, a classic car show, a petting zoo, a midway, and local vendors. Plan your trip for the weekend of October 1 – 2.

The Woodbridge Fair

For over 170+ years, the Woodbridge Fall Fair has brought together families and vendors from all over the province. Come out the weekend of Oct. 8, 9, 10th to spend a day during Thanksgiving weekend antiquing, homemade pie sampling, midway exploring, and witnessing the farmer Olympics.

Oktoberfest in Toronto

This two-day festival takes place in a recreated Festhalle tent and outdoor Bavarian Village at Ontario Place, the weekend of Sept. 30th – Oct. 1st. Complete with Bavarian communal tables and benches imported from Germany, German food and drinks, dancing, and entertainment, it gives an authentic taste of the season in Germany. Be one of the first 500 people to arrive and get yourself a free German glass beer stein.

Blue Mountain’s Apple Harvest Weekend

Did you know Blue Mountain is Ontario’s largest apple-growing region? The highest point of the Niagara Escarpment, this section of the region provides the perfect microclimate for apple growing. Hence, apple season is a big deal around here. Come and celebrate all things apple Oct. 7 – 10th, when the town is alive with celebrations. Make it a weekend if you can, and tack on a spa moment or two.
