In the midst of spring cleaning season, there’s no better time to do a major closet refresh! Over time, our closets become cluttered and disorganized, almost taking the joy out of getting dressed altogether. Having a clean and curated closet full of items you actually want to wear is the first step to having great personal style! Along with purging and editing your wardrobe, there are also some key items that will make your closet feel and look its absolute freshest, no matter the size.
Follow these steps to clean out and refresh your closet:
Dedicate A Day
Cleaning out your closet is not a task that you want to rush. Don’t underestimate how much time and energy a deep closet refresh can take! Block out a day, or at least an afternoon, to dedicate to your closet cleanout and allow it to take as much time as it does. Maybe even put on a movie in the background to make it more enjoyable.
Take Everything Out And Clean Inside
This is one of those processes that looks worse before it gets better. Empty out your closet completely and wipe everything down. You may be surprised by the amount of dust and grime that a single closet can accumulate! It will feel so much fresher after a good wipe-down.
The AB Closet Editing System
The first step in a closet cleanout should be editing down (donating) the clothing and accessories that don’t serve you in one way or another. Celebrity Stylist Allison Bornstein created The AB Closet Editing System, consisting of a step-by-step guide to make the editing process a little easier:
Step 1: Pull out your “Regulars”; you’re obviously keeping these.
Step 2: Identify your “Nevers”. These are the items that you don’t really wear.
Step 3: Organize your “Nevers” into three piles:
- Never: The items you know you’re going to get rid of (they don’t fit, you don’t like them, etc.).
- Not Now: Reserved for items you don’t wear but aren’t ready to part with. Put these items in storage.
- How: The pieces you love but don’t know how to style. Save a spot in your closet for these to revisit.

Arrange And Organize
Now that you’ve purged the items you’re not keeping and stored the items that aren’t serving you at the moment, it’s time to put away the rest. How you decide to organize your clothing is up to you, depending on the size of your closet, how much clothing you have, and even your everyday lifestyle. If you don’t have a specific preference, we love organizing by type of clothing. For example: All your button-ups together, all your blazers together – you get the point.
Take A Step Back
Once you’ve finished the hard part, take a step back and take one last look. Does your closet’s current state reflect your style? Do you want to make any changes? Take your time and reflect to make your closet exactly the way you want it.
Identify The Gaps
You may have noticed some gaps in your wardrobe after completing your closet cleanout. If so, write down the pieces you’re looking to add, list-style, and take your time with finding the best options on the market to fill those gaps.
