Browsing the grocery store for fruit gets a little routine at times. You’ve got your apples, your oranges, your bananas — maybe if you’re at fancier chain, you might even see a guava or two. But yawn no more. The next time you’re at the grocery store, keep your eyes open for a kiwi-berry that has some foodies losing their mind.

The Nergi is a curious fruit. The outside has grape-like skin, while the inside reveals a white centre and tiny black seeds, somewhat like a kiwi. The fruit, however, is not a grape— it’s actually a berry.

Grown at orchards of small farms in France, Portugal, Italy and Spain, be sure to put Nergi berries on your list of things to buy the next time you’re at the grocery store. The berries are produced without the use of GMOs and are 100% natural. Loaded with vitamins C and E, with over 3 grams of fibre per 100 grams, this unique berry is perfect for snacking on the go.

This year marks Nergi berries’ first in Canada, and the season is short — running until mid-November — so it’s best to try this little berry before it’s too late! Nergi berries can be found at select Loblaws, Zehrs, and specialty grocers for about $4 a package.
