The Well is welcoming yet another store to its roster, and this time it’s adidas Originals!
The retail space is aimed to be more than just a store, but a curated experience. adidas is calling the new location “The Collection”.
“adidas is the original sport brand and as such, has the largest footwear archives. The Collection concept is our opportunity to showcase our history, culture, and innovation,” says Lesley Hawkins, VP of Retail for Adidas, via Retail Insider.
When you walk into the flagship boutique, you’ll be greeted with sustainable design elements including an 18-foot window, smart lighting, a footwear wall featuring live plants, and reclaimed school gym flooring in the change rooms. So cool!

Get ready Toronto, you’re about to get on a whole other level with adidas! The very first and Canada’s largest adidas halo concept store is here and you have to check it out. It’s located right on Level 1 in the CF Toronto Eaton Centre.
The new store format gives everyone a chance to browse all of adidas’ sub-brands under one roof, as well as showcase community activation spaces, exclusive product offerings, a personalization station, and more.
Not only are you able to shop all of your fave styles, but it’s a real treat to get to immerse yourself in the adidas world and truly understand the brand’s heritage and its close connection to the city of Toronto.

Alim Dhanji, President of adidas Canada, spoke about the opening, “The halo store opening is something we’ve been excited about for a long time, it really is a reflection of the partnerships and work we do on a more localized level. Having a storefront that allows us to celebrate and bring people together in one space is really special and we’re excited to continue our commitment to the GTA.”
On opening day weekend, there were a ton of awesome events happening for adiclub members. Members got to interact with the in-store vending machine that offered cool surprise gifts every time they used it. There were also Toronto DJs playing tunes throughout the store and a local coffee and juice bar to grab some refreshments.
Plus, to celebrate the Toronto concept store, adidas partnered up with five local artists to create limited-edition items. It featured a collection of graphic tees and tote bags representing the city’s individual neighbourhoods, which were given as gifts with a $100+ purchase to the adiclub members.
An ongoing activation at the halo store that adiclub members can take part in is personalizing their purchase at the Toronto lab (some exclusions apply). Along with this, there will be a ton of other exciting activations and immersive areas that will be a permanent aspect of the store.
The adidas concept store will also continue to host fun pop-up events throughout the year, so if you’re interested in attending, visit adidas CA for all of the info.

We’ve got wind of a super cool collab coming up! adidas has partnered with Gucci to release an epic collection.
It’ll feature both labels’ iconic branding, which was actually first shown to the public back in February during Milan Fashion Week.
Shoutout to Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, who designed the stunning collection that’s all about that retro vibe.
All of course will boast a mix of the adidas three-stripe and adidas’ original trefoil logos as well as Gucci’s GG monogram.
Aside from the must-have apparel and even sneakers, there will also be totally new categories to shop for. Golf bags will be available in leather or with the adidas x Gucci logo all over, and colourful umbrellas too!
Many of the items have been made from conscious material fabrications like cotton, viscose, and Econyl regenerated nylon.

It’ll be over 12,000 square feet and will offer a fully immersive consumer experience with a lounge, personal shopping space, community activation area, and more.

The Dubai store even has a “Marker Lab” spot where customers can actually be part of designing their own items. Fingers crossed that this is something, we Torontonians can look forward to as well.
Adidas said in a release, “Drawing inspiration from the mosaic of the city where art, culture, and diversity meet, the new store will bring sustainability to light through an urban landscape lens.”
It’ll occupy the space in the Eaton Centre where the Urban Planet and Forever21 used to call home.

The brand with three stripes has one of the richest histories in the footwear industry with its roots going back to 1949. Adidas is nearing its 70th anniversary but throughout its history, the brand has experienced its ups and downs. It was one of the most popular footwear brands in the world until the 1990’s with its iconic silhouettes such as the Superstar, the Stan Smith, and the Rod Laver.
Many would argue that the emergence of Nike’s revolutionary Air technology and the cultural significance of Michael Jordan to be the main culprit for Adidas’ decline but Adidas was able to take that same recipe for success in recent years with its BOOST technology and Kanye West.
Adidas worked with BASF, one of the world’s leading chemical companies, to utilize BOOST technology and incorporate it into their future designs with a midsole design composed of this innovative cushioning material. BOOST was first introduced by Adidas in 2013 with the release of the Energy Boost and the technology became even more popular with the release of the UltraBOOST in 2015. Both silhouettes were originally designed as performance running shoes but they became increasingly popular as lifestyle sneakers as Adidas endorser, Kanye West, was often seen wearing them throughout 2015.

adidas continued to push out products with BOOST technology as it was the hottest technology in the industry, and they were able to elevate their lifestyle products with the launch of their collaborative projects with influential figures, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Kanye was given two different silhouettes with his initial release, the low-cut Yeezy BOOST 350 and the high-cut Yeezy BOOST 750, then he expanded his catalogue with the release of the Yeezy BOOST 950, 350 V2, and the 700 Wave Runners. Pharrell put his own spin on the popular NMD silhouette and released multiple iterations of the Human Race NMD, expanding the Pharrell Williams collection by Adidas beyond classic silhouettes such as the Superstar.

BOOST technology truly took over the sneaker world in the past two years and we started to see the drop off in popularity as the market was saturated with Adidas BOOST products.
Adidas has produced too many versions of the same shoes, most notably the UltraBOOST and the NMD, with minor updates and it will be interesting to see if they will be able to use the technology in new ways to continue growing in 2018. One thing for certain is the fact that models such as the Yeezy BOOST 350 V2, UltraBOOST, and NMD need to be retired for the time being. Adidas will need to truly get creative with incorporating the BOOST technology in their shoes like they did with the Yeezy BOOST 700, where they used the ever-popular cushioning technology but the visibility of the technology is hidden with the newly designed tooling.

When it comes to fashion, there are brand enthusiasts and then there are brand loyalists. Alex Des Roches falls into the latter category with his love for the brand with three stripes, also known as adidas. His Instagram feed features nothing but adidas, and the moment that you walk into Alex’s home, you begin to understand his loyalty for his favourite brand through his closet, sneaker room, and home decor.
Alex is the store manager of the adidas Originals store in downtown Montreal on Sainte-Catherine, one of the three adidas Neighbourhood Concept stores in Canada. He is also one of the founding members of The Sneaker Podcast, a weekly podcast focusing on Canadian sneaker culture, and a contributing writer for The Brag Affair, a Canadian sneaker and lifestyle blog.
We caught up with Alex and spoke to him about his love for the adidas brand:

Tell us about what you do
I currently run Montreal’s adidas Originals store located in the heart of the city. I have been with the company for seven years now, and I have been wearing/collecting/hoarding adidas sneakers for more than ten years! Back in high school, I started messing around with breakdancing and discovered the hip hop culture, which eventually led me to fashion and sneakers.
What is your first memory of the adidas brand?
I remember being 13 years old, going to practice with the other guys that would dance in my hometown, and I wanted the Superstars so bad, but didn’t really care about brands and expensive products. I asked my mother to buy me a pair of knock off shell toes, with four stripes.
Why do you solely focus on adidas and not any other brands?
Although I do not wear any other brands, I do recognize good designs and great partnerships. I appreciate everything, and make my opinions and ideas based on the esthetic final results, not the brand. Quality, color blocking and storytelling are my favourite aspects of the development of sneakers. I found myself falling in love (officially) for adidas specifically and not caring about anything else back in 2010 when I was hired in an adidas outlet store. Access to product was easier, therefore it encouraged me to only wear and represent the stripes. Since tracksuits and sneakers were my uniform at work and on the dance floor, I found pride wearing the three stripes from head-to-toe and learning about its culture and heritage.

adidas has an amazing catalogue of sneaker designs, what is your favourite model?
The ZX range has always been one of my favourite, it was a visionary move, in my opinion, to design a full range of running shoes that would fit specific runner’s needs. The design and engineering that worked on the ZX line are two really big inspiration for me in terms of innovation. I also am a huge fan of the Torsion System technology, for its functionality as well as for its aesthetic. The original ZX 8000 in the ‘Aqua’ colourway is definitely an all time favourite for me. Since 2013, I researched and started collecting the EQT sneakers, which are no longer a stranger to the sneaker culture of 2017. The EQT range is another extremely intelligent approach to sportswear that eventually became a street staple.
Throughout the years, adidas has collaborated with different brands and creative individuals. Which one is your favourite collection?
Couple of years back, adidas Originals worked with Kazuki Kuraishi from Japan. Such an amazing creator! I regret not getting any of the apparel that he worked on from any of his seasons with the brand. I was not on that fashion level yet I guess. His ZXZ were my personal favourite!
List the top five things about adidas that you love!

If you are a regular on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto, you may have noticed that the adidas Originals store has been under construction and closed to shoppers. While this may have been troubling for hardcore adidas fans, the store will reopen on Friday, August 11th and has been fully revamped.
The slick new store houses everything adidas Originals and focuses on providing the Queen Street area with a communal hub for brand enthusiasts and sneakerheads alike.
The StyleDemocracy team had the opportunity to sit down with Michael Smyth, Director of Retail Stores and Stew Smith, VP adidas Brand Canada to discuss the new store and direction of the brand in Canada.
If you’re interested in discovering more about the store, the configuration, and what adidas has in store for the future, stay tuned as that article will be a feature on the site this week. In the meantime, check out our photos of the beautiful space and head down to 389 Queen Street W., Toronto on Friday, August 11th to take a peak.
Happy shopping.
