The fall season is arguably the best time of year to treat yourself to a day trip. With the beautiful colours that surround us, along with the crisp fall air, it’s the perfect time to get a short trip in before it reaches that time of year when it’s too cold to even want to go outside. We know travelling can be expensive and we don’t all have the luxury to pick up and leave our day-to-day lives. Luckily, there are so many great places surrounding Toronto that are totally day-trip worthy, so you don’t have to stray too far away to treat yourself to a day of fun activities, stunning scenery, and much-needed relaxation. We’ve rounded up a handful of easy and fun day trips you can go on that are under four hours away from Toronto!
Cranberry growing has been a Johnston family tradition since 1950, located within Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery, the cranberry farm is just about two hours away from Toronto. The farm has things to do all year round! This fall you can take a wagon tour, see the harvest, visit the Cranberry Café, or take the insta-worthy Cranberry Plunge, where you actually go into a cranberry marsh! If you want to have a fun day full of adventures, cranberries, and even some wine, check out Johnston’s Cranberry Farm!
Check out all of the wineries at the Beamsville Bench area! It makes up the westernmost part of the Niagara Peninsula wine-growing area and is home to some of the best vineyards in Ontario. Now all you have to choose is which wines you want to sip on that day.
Hamilton is only about an hour away from Toronto, and is the Waterfall Capital of the world! Some popular waterfalls in Hamilton are: Albion Falls, Webster Falls, Tiffany Falls, and so many more, as there are over 100 different waterfalls in the city! If you’re bored with your regular trail, a day trip to Hamilton is the perfect way to spice up your routine hike and see some amazing waterfalls.
There is a little something for everyone over at Kelso. You can take a lovely chairlift ride right down the escarpment, pack a lunch for a picnic, adventure around on a mountain bike, and so much more.
There are endless activities to do during a day trip to Niagara Falls which located under two hours away from Toronto. Clifton Hill is a Niagara Falls attraction that is sure to keep your day packed with all sorts of fun. Don’t miss out on great activities, including the Skywheel, where you can experience spectacular views, and the Wax Museum, where you can see your favourite celebrities in wax form. Also make sure you visit Ripley’s, or simply just walk around and enjoy the beauty of Niagara Falls.
Dundas Peak is a hiking trail located in Dundas, Ontario which is about an hour away from Toronto. Dundas Peak is known for its breathtaking, beautiful view at the top of the rocks, so if you love nature, hiking, and great views (who doesn’t?!) Dundas Peak is definitely worth checking out!
Algonquin Park may seem far away, but it’s actually only around three hours from Toronto! Algonquin Park is the perfect day getaway if you really want to forget about the city for a little while and enjoy the fine beauty that nature has to offer. Of course, we love a good hike, but forests and trails near the city just won’t have the same kind of nature or wildlife Algonquin as to offer. Let’s face it: you’re not going to get the chance to see a moose on your local Toronto trail!
Don’t want to travel for up to 4 hours? No worries. Mount Nemo is a total fan favourite with hikers in the area. This peaceful spot is perfect to take in the breathtaking view, which you can see the CN Tower if it’s a clear day!
The old town of Cambridge is so underrated! There are a ton of beautifully designed buildings, shops, and, of course, the Cambridge Grand River to walk around and explore.
Okay, so maybe going on hikes and getting down and dirty with nature isn’t your thing. If you’d rather spend a day off relaxing at the spa, Scandinave Spa has you covered. Located about over two hours outside of Toronto and surrounded by beautiful views, this spa is the perfect way to spend a day and relax. The Scandinave Spa offers multiple different packages, all sure to serve you ultimate relaxation.
Take a day trip to Canada’s Wonderland this fall to enjoy rides, roller coasters, games, food, and more! The hours vary throughout the fall, so check its calendar here! Halloween Haunt also begins September 27th until November 2nd if you’re up for an evening trip instead!
Popular for its ski hills, cozy hotels, and fun activities, visiting Blue Mountain is well worth the 2-ish hour drive, even if you’re just planning on spending the day! Visit the shops within the resort, eat great food (we recommend Firehall Pizza), and partake in numerous activities that are sure to keep you busy with a Day Pass.

Ontario’s fall season may be the most beautiful in the whole country. With brilliant colours, golden light and often picture-perfect weather, September/October in this province can be truly breathtaking. Lucky for Torontonians, you don’t need to travel far from downtown to get a dose of autumnal beauty. Set out for a meander around any one of the following spots in the city to take in the sensory delights of the season.
It’s hard to believe this picturesque, 20.5-hectare ravine-lined park exists in the heart of the city. Near Yonge and St. Clair, David A. Balfour Park is one of the largest – and most stunning, green spaces downtown, which was recently completely revitalized and newly opened to the public. There are fountains, reflecting pools and gardens, and creekside trails that lead into the ravine and connect to the Kay Gardner Beltline Trail. It’s got everything you need to experience the beauty of the season, right downtown.
Within walking distance of busy Queen Street East and Kingston Road in the Beaches, an elevated boardwalk runs through 1.3km of a secluded, leafy forest, where red oak and maple trees blaze red and orange in the fall. The Glen Stewart Park trail may be short in length, but it includes more than a couple of sets of stairs, so if you’re looking to break a sweat as you admire the fall foliage, this is where to head.
While many love the Bluffs for its sunny summer beach retreat, this remarkable landscape dressed in fall colours is maybe the most stunning it gets all year. Head to the beach at Bluffers Park for a stroll along the water, or hike the trails that line the top of the bluffs and enjoy the sweeping views of the lake below.
For epic views of the Toronto skyline along with fiery fall foliage, head to Trillium Park. This 7.5-acre waterfront green space near Ontario Place offers tree-lined trails, pebble beaches, and interesting rock forms in addition to the scenic cityscape views. Come for a day on the weekend and remember why you love the city.
Macabre? Maybe. But the peace and tranquillity here in this historic cemetery is unparalleled. Not to mention the beauty. Mount Pleasant’s abundant tree collection, which spans over 600 species, and includes some of the rarest, oldest trees in the country, makes it absolutely worth a visit in the fall.
There are over 10 diverse trails to choose from in this east-end urban park, which is home to a variety of landscapes including meadows, valleys, forests, wetlands, and farmland. Get in the fall spirit and take the Orchard Trail, which is a 2 KM pathway lined with apple trees.
Head over to Toronto’s Botanical Garden to see an array of plants, flowers, and trees that are currently in-season. You’re sure to see a variety of stunning colours throughout the many gardens!

11 Perfect Road Trips You Should Go On This Fall
It’s finally fall, that short but oh-so-sweet season that calls for cozy layers, pumpkin everything, and apples – so many apples.
Apple picking – and documenting it on social media – is a major must once the leaves start to change colour, whether you make a romantic date out of it, take the niece and nephew, or grab a few friends and make it part of a Sunday Funday.
Here are 9 spots to pick apples close to Toronto.

If farm-to-table is your thing, not only will you find an apple orchard at Pingle’s Farm Market in Clarington – which features varieties like Honey Crisps, Red Delicious, and Ambrosia – you can take home other farm offerings at the spot’s huge farmers’ market. Added draws include a corn maze and wagon rides.

At Applewood Farm Winery – located near Stouffville – your apple picking session can also come with some locally made wine and cider. In addition to Royal Gala, Macintosh, and Cortland apples, you can also pick squash and pumpkins, and then unwind with an adult beverage made on the property.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BnpMGFkFZMU/?taken-by=chudleighsfarm
One of the most well-known spots to apple pick is Chudleigh’s, a farm in Milton that has been producing delicious apples for three generations. If you want to make a day out of it, this is the place to do so; the spot features the fully licensed Farm Kitchen and Silo Bar, a massive play area that includes a large hay maze and nature trails, and farm animals.

In King City, Pine Farms Orchard boasts 21 varieties of apples – more than most people probably knew existed. Apples are weighed by the lb., with a minimum purchase of $5.00 per person. An on-site bakeshop serves up pies, tarts, and a selection of other sweet and savoury goodness.

If you’ve never been to Mount Albert, Ontario, a fall day in the country – complete with apple picking – makes for the perfect excuse for a road trip. In addition to apples ($13.50 for a 5 lb. bag), you can also score yourself some fresh squash, sweet corn, and pumpkins. Added talking points include pig races and pumpkin cannons.
This popular Markham farm features Lobo, Sweet Sixteen, and Honey Crisp apples this season. There is a $12 minimum purchase upon arrival, which includes one 5 lb. bag of PYO apples and the farm recommends calling ahead for a crop update before making the trek up there.

East of the city, you can find all the Cortland, Paula Red, Royal Gala, and Gingergold apples your heart desires at Bowmanville’s Watson Farm. You’ll also find other fresh Ontario fruits and veggies for purchase here.

Also in Bomanville is Archibald Orchard & Estate Winery, which has been a pick-your-own apple spot since 1967 and features almost 10,000 trees. In addition to the abundant apples, you can also discover an assortment of wines made with fresh fruit from the property and ciders made with fresh-off-the-tree apples.

At Downey’s farm – located in picturesque Caledon (which is even prettier in the fall) – you can pick 13 varieties of apples. Offering a more affordable option than some of the others, there is no entrance fee here, and the only requirement is that you buy at least $5.00 of apples.
