From the instantly recognizable beaver logo, to the classic salt and pepper speckled sweatpants, Roots has become the unofficial uniform of Canadians. The wilderness-inspired casual athleticwear pieces are perfect for lounging around the house, or staying cozy next to a campfire. We’re willing to bet that you have at least one item from Roots in your closet, and if you don’t are you sure you’re even Canadian? For anyone who is obsessed with shopping at Roots, these brands need to be on your radar the next time you shop!
Launched over 100 years ago, L.L. Bean became popular from the sales of its Bean Boots, originally designed for hunters. Since the company’s launch over 100 years ago, the brand has grown to include clothing, footwear, outdoor equipment, and home goods. It’s effectively become a one stop shop for all your outdoor needs. L.L. Bean’s classic styles have stood the test of time and are a staple in outdoor wear. Now you can shop L.L. Bean at the retailer’s first Canadian location at Oakville Place! The store is filled with warm knits and soft flannels that will be perfect for fall apple picking or a brisk hike to see the changing colours of the leaves.
When you think of Abercrombie & Fitch, the brands preppy polos and denim jeans made popular in the early 2000s probably come to mind. Now the brand exudes effortless style that’s full of versatile, trendy, and relaxed pieces. Abercrombie & Fitch is definitely less outdoorsy than the other brands on this list but the brand focuses on creating casual and collegiate looks that are perf for everyday wear. A&F’s has a commitment to providing customers with lasting quality and exceptional comfort and that’s what really makes this brand stand out.
It’s no secret that the fashion industry is incredibly damaging to our earth, but tentree is on a mission to change that and is planning to become the most environmentally progressive brand on the planet. This ultra-sustainable brand serves fashion with a conscience, creating styles that will have you looking good and feel good. All items are made from sustainable materials like hemp, organic cotton, and recycled polyester — even the buttons are environmentally friendly, as they’re made from coconut shells instead of plastic! In addition, everything is manufactured in socially responsible factories, plus, the brand plants 10 trees for every item sold and has a goal of planting one billion trees by 2030!
While Levi’s is probably most known for its jeans and super cool denim, the brand actually has a wide range of other items and has recently expanded to include accessories as well. Levi’s has the same laidback, comfortable feel as Roots does and we love how the brand manages to maintain a hint of a vintage inspo, while still feeling perfectly up to date. The quality manufacturing creates timeless, classic items that are designed to outlast the stressors of day to day wear. Like the brand tagline says, these products are meant to be lived in – not just worn.
The North Face has been known and loved by hardcore adventurers for years now, but don’t let that intimidate you as the brand is suitable for everyone. Designed to survive on a mountainside, these pieces are made with great technical quality. The jackets and fleeces are sure the keep you warm during the unpredictable fall weather all the way into the thick of winter. Also, in line with the mission to preserve the outdoors, The North Face has recently re-released its most popular styles now made with sustainable materials.
For comfy and cozy wardrobe staples for men, women, and kids. Lands’ End apparel and outerwear is made using high-end materials that are designed to last.
There’s a reason outdoor lovers are always sporting Columbia outerwear and apparel. If you love the timeless, outdoorsy styles of Roots, Columbia is a must-shop.
Eddie Bauer has been producing designer outdoor wear for the past 100 years. For stylish pieces you’ll own for years to come, like Roots, this brand is a top pick.
Although they are known for their iconic backpacks, Fjallenraven designs a range of apparel and accessories that are perfect for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Always look on-point with flannels, parkas, vests, sweaters, pants, and many more styles that rival Roots’ own designs.
Patagonia is famous for its iconic fleece sweaters and zip-ups, vests, jackets, and stylish high-end outdoor gear. Although the brand is definitely a pricier alternative to Roots, you’ll have these pieces for years to come.
If we’ve learned anything from the past few months, it’s that time spent getting outside is precious. We’ve been cooped up indoors for months and if you’re someone who’s just itching to explore and need to pick up a few essentials, then perhaps a trip to L.L.Bean is in the cards. In fact, the iconic outdoor brand has just announced plans to open three new Canadian stores.
“The positive response to our first store opening accelerated our expansion plan from two stores to three stores this year, despite the economic downturn,” said Greg Elder, Vice President of Retail and International for L.L.Bean in a release. “We’re extremely grateful to our Canadian customers for welcoming us, and the continued success really speaks to the strength of the brand, the relevance of our iconic products and the kinship we share in the inherent love and care for the outdoors.”
The Barrie L.L.Bean store will be located at Georgian Mall and is slated to open on July 10 while the Ottawa outpost will be situated in Ottawa Train Yards.
“We’re extremely mindful of how and where we grow,” said Stephen Smith, President and CEO of L.L.Bean. “We’re excited to be able to offer our Canadian neighbours more options in more locations around the country this year, and to provide them the outdoor essentials they need to enjoy the many restorative benefits of being outside. We look forward to building on that relationship with our Canadian customers for years to come.”

2019 so far has seen the closure of many stores in Canada, including Forever21, Payless ShoeSource, Town Shoes, Home Outfitters, and our last two Zellers locations. However, we’ve also acquired some exciting and long-awaited international brands in the North this year too, balancing the scales. Though retail sales amounted to $225.8 billion in Ontario alone at the end of September, the entire country’s retail sales growth is supposedly heading for a depressing 10-year low. Hopefully, the new shopping destinations that have arrived will reverse the odds of that happening.
Luxury Italian fashion house Valentino opened the doors to its first Canadian flagship store at Yorkdale Shopping Centre this past March. The new store occupies a large 4,700 square foot space that’s filled to the brim with the brand’s ready-to-wear offerings, accessories, leather goods, and shoes.
Just this past fall, Italian brand Furla opened its first Canadian location at Yorkdale Shopping Centre. The luxury brand is well known for its handbags, shoes, jewellery, sunglasses, and watches. This new store is all part of the brands global expansion strategy and we’re looking forward to seeing where Furla goes next!
With locations already in Japan and Turkey, the much anticipated Eataly has finally landed in Toronto at the Manulife Centre on Bloor Street. With 50,000 (!) square feet of high-quality Italian goodies, (a.k.a heaven), Eataly has several different cafes, restaurants, takeaway counters, and a finely curated marketplace to shop. You can also enjoy cooking classes and hard-to-resist complimentary tastings in store.
U.S. specialty outdoor retailer L.L. Bean took over a massive 14,205 square foot retail space that was vacated by Toronto-based grocery chain Pusateri’s Fine Foods at Oakville Place. The new L.L. Bean store is selling its functional accessories, outdoor essentials, and cozy clothing that will have you prepared for any outdoor adventures.
Ref girls, unite! This celeb-loved, L.A.-based brand cut the ribbons outside its first Canadian location in July, bringing its cult-like following to Yorkdale Mall. The 100 per cent carbon-neutral company is supplying sustainable basics and timeless styles to the masses, promoting slow-fashion processes at a fast fashion pace.
Another luxury fashion house, Balenciaga, expanded into Canada this year with its first standalone storefront in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre. In its open-concept space, the Kering-owned French brand is selling a range of accessories, footwear, and streetwear. A few more Balenciaga boutiques are said to be opening as the company sees growth in the Canadian market.
Dollarama has a rival to compete with now that MUMUSO opened its first Toronto location at the North York Centre in July. With another two locations in Vancouver, the bargain retailer sells children’s products, apparel, accessories, kitchen items, bags, stationery, skincare, and cosmetic goods that are super-low cost.
Along with all the other international big-hitters that opened in Yorkdale Shopping Centre this summer, “naturalism-oriented” K-beauty brand Innisfree took over a 2,500 square foot space in the mall. The South-Korean brand has made clean-er beauty and skincare products more available to Torontonians, as 80 per cent of the company’s ingredients are natural.
Chinese-owned variety store Ximivogue opened its first Canadian location at CF Fairview Mall earlier this year. The retailer sells about 7,000 Korean products at relatively low prices, including household goods, clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, beauty products, and toys.
Expansions to Canada aren’t just for fashion retailers. American vegan chain by CHLOE. made a big splash when it landed at Yorkdale Shopping Centre a few months back. Serving up tasty versions of comfort classics like nachos, hot dogs, burgers, mac & cheese, and more, by CHLOE. needs to be on your must-eat list!

As we make our way into colder days, you’re going to want to bundle up. Toronto winters can be brutal, so it’s better to be prepared in advance and say hello to big, downy parkas. If your hunt for the perfect winter jacket has just begun, this is the perfect starting point for you. We know winter coats don’t always come cheap so if this is the year you’re looking for a new one, we have you covered.
MEC Is known for making some of the best outdoor gear on the market. With friendly and knowledgeable staff, this is a great place to get your hands on a durable and practical winter jacket that will last you a few years at the least.
Sporting Life is a mecca for all things snow related. The store’s winter coat selection is one of the best in the city, and it carries everything from high-end technical ski wear, to fashion-forward outwear that will make even the most seasoned fashionistas jealous. Sporting Life currently holds one of the largest Canada Goose collections and caters to the refined shopper who doesn’t mind shelling out several hundreds of dollars for a high-quality coat. What’s awesome about Sporting Life is that you can regularly find great winter jackets on sale that will help save you some coin.
A true destination for anyone obsessed with being outside, L.L. Bean is filled with everything you’ll need to stay warm while outdoors. In addition to all the cozy sweaters, boots, and flannel that the retailer is famous for, don’t forget to check out its well made winter coats, too. We couldn’t be more excited that the brand now has a location in Canada that’s situated at Oakville Place.
If there’s something Canadian retailer, Aritzia knows, it’s winter and the retailer has definitely upped its parka game within the last few years. Most of the parkas and coats you’ll find at Aritzia are from its house brands such as Golden by TNA, TNA, Community, and Wilfred Free, but they are without a doubt, warm as can be. Many of the jackets you’ll find are made of water-resistant material, have a removable vegan fur trim, are machine washable, and down-filled.
Lorne’s has been a staple in Toronto for decades and what’s great about Lorne’s is that it does one thing — sell coats — and it does it well. While the weather may dictate that you need a parka, often in Toronto it’s unnecessary if you’re a few minutes walk from the office. If you work in a typical office you need a business appropriate coat. Actually, we are going further than that everyone needs a dress coat, not just you office folks.
Looking for a coat that’ll see you through the snowy season? You’ll want to get yourself into The North Face as soon as possible because in Toronto, you never know when winter will kickstart. If you think you need the heaviest jacket in the world to stay warm whilst outside, think again because The North Face has loads of coat options that are sleek, not bulky in the slightest, and won’t make you sacrifice warmth.
If looking cute is just as important as staying warm, then you’ve come to the right place. SOIA & KYO has you covered with its well made and expertly designed outerwear that doesn’t skimp on the chic details. The brands sporty down-filled parkas are crazy warm, and the fit of the coat looks so high fashion! Not wanting to order online? Head to Square One to shop in person!
A new label from Altitude Sports that’s out of Montreal is Vallier and it’s a name you’ll want to remember when shopping for all things winter weather. In addition to the ultra chic and warm parkas and down-filled jackets that the brand offers, make sure you layer up in one of its crewneck sweatshirts and sweaters for all the cozy vibes!
If you’re looking for cheap and cheerful, Value Village and various secondhand shops around Toronto are always great to hit up. While considered “gently used” you can often find yourself a great unique jacket perfect for those who need more than one or two jackets to round out your style needs. Many great consignment stores have fabulous vintage designer coats that can help you stand out in a crowd. Going this route almost guarantees you won’t be standing next to someone in the exact same coat as you.
While it can be somewhat hit or miss, Winners and Marshalls are great options for the shopper looking to pick up a brand name winter coat without breaking the bank. The best part is that these stores restock merchandise frequently, so there’s a good chance you’ll score no matter when you go in to shop.
Joe Fresh is a great choice for the frugal shopper. If you’re in the market for a down-filled coat this is the place to go to grab one for under $200. These coats are crazy warm and will last multiple seasons so you really get a great bang for your buck.
While definitely not cheap option, a Canada Goose jacket is well worth your buck if you’re looking to invest in a quality, made-in-Canada down jacket. Having been experts in luxury extreme weather outerwear since 1957, you can be guaranteed that the brands coats will last a lifetime and keep you warm in the chilliest winter temperatures. The brands newest collab is with luxury label Juun.J and it’s a collection that re-imagined four of its heritage pieces. Expect to see the same super warm jackets but with trendy exaggerated proportions and graphic silhouettes.
If you’re looking for a place that has a TON of different styles to choose from, start your search at Nordstrom. Whether you’re looking for something functional or fashionable, the store has the best of both worlds, plus everything in between. Think quality Canadian brands, as well as other designer labels like Cole Haan and Ralph Lauren. Not to mention you can even enlist the help of a free stylist to help you find exactly what you’re looking for.
If you consider yourself an adventurer, you might want to check out Patagonia. The brand is all about functionality and durability at its best. The brands sporty yet chic jackets are perfect for those wishing to spend a lot of time doing activities outdoors this winter. Known for its lighter jackets that are compact, water resistant, and insulated, you’ll get all the warmth without feeling like the Michelin Man.
Montreal-based Pajar makes jackets that are both stylish and warm, and when we say warm, we mean you won’t freeze, even when it’s -30C outside. There’s a reason why Pajar has been highly revered in the winter wear world, and its quality, innovative technology, and craftsmanship prove why.
If you’re in the market for classic fitted silhouettes and functionality, then Nobis has your back. The brands jackets will keep you safe and warm in pretty much all weather conditions, including wind, rain, snow, sleet, and hail. A big plus is that Nobis jackets can be home laundered, meaning you can save big money on pricy dry cleaning.

While the summer season is more than halfway over, there is still loads of time to get outside, and enjoy what’s left. If you’re down for adventure, you might be needing to grab a few essentials for your excursion. There’s no better place to shop for all your needs than L.L. Bean’s first Canadian location which is now open as of August 23.
This news isn’t exactly a surprise as the American outdoors retailer had announced last fall that its expanding into the Canadian market with Canadian distributor The Jaytex Group.
“We’ve had a long, meaningful relationship with Canadian customers for decades, so we’re thrilled to be able to give our loyal Canadian fans a true comprehensive, omnichannel L.L.Bean experience, with a dedicated web site, Canadian catalogues, and now L.L.Bean retail stores,” said Stephen Smith, President and CEO of L.L.Bean in a release. “As a Maine-based company that shares a lot of commonalities with our northern neighbours, we’re eager to be infusing a bit of the Maine essence and L.L.Bean brand into the Canadian market.”
In addition to entering the Canadian market, the brand also launched a Canadian website with Canadian pricing, and has released a Canadian version of its iconic catalogue.
The retailer also has a number of gifts, games, and home essentials available in store. Among those are its iconic slipper that’s actually called the Wicked Good Slipper because it’s so comfortable.
“Hudson’s Bay celebrates a sense of community and outdoor adventure that is embraced by Canadians,” says Wayne Drummond, Chief Merchant, Hudson’s Bay. “Our customers trust Hudson’s Bay to find and deliver the very best brands that reflect those values. It is this shared spirit with L.L.Bean that compelled us to launch the brand in our stores and online this fall.”
“We are proud to bring the first L.L.Bean store to the Canadian market. Working with key retailers, including our longtime partnership with Hudson’s Bay, will only strengthen and broaden the L.L. Bean brand across the country” says Howie Kastner, President, Jaytex Group.

Toronto Is Getting Another Zero-Waste Retail Store
It’s no secret that Canada is a highly attractive market for international retailers. Every year we see dozens of new brands expanding to Canada in hopes of capturing the fast-growing and competitive new market.
And even though 2018 wasn’t the most successful year, with many local and international retailers filing for bankruptcy and closing their stores for good, there are still plenty of highly-anticipated bricks-and-mortar store openings waiting for us in 2019.
Italian food concept Eataly represents a lively open-concept European market where visitors can shop, taste, and learn about high-quality Italian food at fair prices. Eataly will be offering everything from everyday groceries, cured meats, a selection of homemade cheeses to cooking workshops and in-shop eateries. As we reported earlier, Eataly will be a part of a $100 million Manulife Centre expansion and will span 50,000 square feet, and is slated to open some time in 2019. Founded by Italian Native, Oscar Farinetti, the first location was opened in Torino, Italy in 2007. Currently, there are Eataly outposts in such countries as Japan, China, and America, with locations opening in Australia, England, and more.
If you’re a fan of breaded chicken sandwiches and chicken in general, this news is for you! Last year the iconic American restaurant chain Chick-fil-A announced plans to open more than a dozen restaurants in Canada over the next few years and we couldn’t be more excited. The first Toronto location is set to open in the GTA this year at Bloor and Yonge. At the moment the company operates more than 2,300 restaurants in the United States.

This American company that specializes in clothing and outdoor recreation equipment was launched in 1912 in Freeport, Maine. The company started with just one product: their famous Maine Hunting Shoe (also known as Bean Boots). While there are no standalone L.L. Bean stores in Canada yet, the brand already launched a Canadian e-commerce site and is currently selling its products at 24 Canadian retailers including Sporting Life, MEC, and SportChek. You can expect to see the store open at Oakville Place, where it will reportedly be taking over the old Pusateri’s space later this year.

Innisfree is an all-natural cosmetic brand based in South Korea with over hundreds of stores across the globe, which promotes 33 health, beauty, and personal brands. The company’s concept is “Clean Island, where clean nature and healthy beauty coexist happily.” Innisfree uses 80% natural ingredients, and the best part is that all their products are fairly affordable, ranging from $20-30. Expect to see the K-beauty brand’s first Canadian store to open at Yorkdale Shopping Centre in 2019.

Calling all cool girls! Popular sustainable L.A.-based brand Reformation is going international, with its first retail location outside of the United States based in Canada. Reformation opened its doors to Canadians at Yorkdale Shopping Centre in July 2019 and shoppers can expect to see the brand’s beautiful dresses, denim, footwear, and more.
Facebook/HEMA
Known for its high-quality design and competitive pricing, HEMA is a popular European retailer that sells household goods, beauty products, clothing, and more. Earlier this year, the value-based retailer announced that it would be launching in Ontario later this year through a partnership with Walmart. If all goes to plan, you’ll soon start to see HEMA stores inside of larger form Walmart stores.

It seems like many value-based variety retailers have eyes set on Canada this year, as Korean-inspired Ximivogue is reportedly opening stores at both Sherway Gardens and CF Fairview Mall later this year. Expect to see lots of beauty and skincare, home accessories, electronics and home decor all at low prices.
Instagram/@mumuso_ca
And Ximivogue isn’t the only Korean-inspired variety Torontonians will be able to shop this year. MUMUSO, a Korean-inspired dollar store, opened its first Canadian location in July 2019 at the North York Centre. Though the brand is based in China, its business and products are marketed as Korean. Offerings include apparel, kitchen items, accessories, and much more.

Summer is all about finding ways to spend as much time outside, right? But if you’re someone who appreciates the finer things in life, you might think camping, cottaging, or hiking might not be for you. What if I told you that you could have it all — a fun outdoor experience while still staying true to your glam and chic needs?
Instagram/@oonihq
Take your love for pizza with you when you go camping this summer. This pizza oven uses wood pellets as fuel and it gets as hot as 500°C in just 10 minutes, so you can satisfy that craving super fast. Not only can you create the ‘za of your dreams but you can use this baby to bake or roast anything you’d cook in your oven at home all to be enjoyed in the great outdoors.
Even though it’s summer, temps still drop in the evening. If you’re camping and cozying up around the fire pit, you might want to layer up a bit and a onesie is the way to go. There’s a reason why so many people are low-key obsessed with the onesies available at Drake General Store — they’re well made, super comfortable, and adorable so why not pack one with you?
Just because you’re spending time camping or grilling outside, it doesn’t mean you have to use lack-luster cookware, right? Get your hands on All-Clad’s stainless steel outdoor cooking set and you’re all set — literally! Each of these versatile pans is designed for cooking meat, seafood and vegetables all to perfection. Plus, they can even withstand heat up to 700°F. PS. This would also make for a killer Father’s Day gift too, in case you’re living that last-minute life!

Whether you’re gathering around for a jam session or roasting marshmallows for s’mores, get ready for all the magical summer nights to come!

It’s the weekend and you’ve earned yourself some time to relax and unwind. Take it and catch up on some zzz’s in this hammock from L.L.Bean. This item will quickly become your new favourite piece of outdoor gear as it holds two people and is easily set up using tree-friendly hanging straps and carabiners.
Not into the look of hiking boots? Me either. If you’re struggling to find functional yet cute shoes to wear on your outdoor adventures, look no further. These shoes are super comfortable, lightweight, sustainable, and easy on the eyes. If you’re not a major hiker and aren’t in the market for heavy duty hiking boots, definitely give these a try!

Even though spending time in the great outdoors is amazing for your mind and soul, you probably still need your morning cup of coffee. This portable espresso machine is lightweight and fits seamlessly in your pack and delivers a fab cup of joe in just a few minutes!

Even though it seems that nearly every retailer is closing locations left, right, and centre, there are some retailers thankfully expanding.
L.L. Bean had announced last fall that it had entered into an exclusive agreement with Canadian distributer The Jaytex Group for an expansion into Canada and they’ve made good on their promise.
The 14,205 square foot Oakville Place location was once occupied by Pusateri’s Fine Foods but they left the space in December and ever since we’ve been wondering who would take it over.
Even though spring is just around the corner, you might have to hold onto your shopping lists because this location is slated to open sometime next year.
View this post on Instagram
Until then you can shop all your favourite L.L. Bean goods like their camping gear, backpacks, and all the flannel at various stores in Canada like Sporting Life, MEC and Hudson’s Bay. In addition to shopping in stores, the 106-year old retailer also just launched a website with prices in Canadian dollars
This new Canadian location joins the brands 28 stores across the U.S, plus they also have a call centre and distribution centre in Japan.
CEO Steve Smith says, “The upside potential is fantastic. It’s still a few percentage points, but a few percentage points in the retail industry is good…”
Fingers crossed this expansion north of the border works well because Jaytex has plans to open 20 more locations across the country!
