It’s a given that shopping involves spending money, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be smart about it and save a few dollars along the way! There are plenty of tips and tricks to help you save money while you shop. And in girl math, the money you save is just extra earnings in your pocket! From browser extensions to the best times to shop, consider this your savvy shopping guide.

Use these tips to save money the next time you go shopping:

Use Browser extensions, such as Honey

If you’re new to the world of browser extensions, you’re in for a treat. Honey, for example, is completely free to download, and it automatically searches for coupon codes while you shop. At checkout, you just click the Honey extension, and it does the rest – trying any and all recent coupon codes that customers have used on the specific site you’re shopping at. (Not sponsored, we just love it).

Wait for sales

It goes without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway – wait for sales. Especially if you’re planning on going on a shopping spree. That way, you’ll only spend a fraction of what you normally would. Different stores and brands have varying sale patterns, but dates like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day, and towards the end of each season, are safe bets to expect markdowns. Also… you already know we love a good warehouse sale.

Make Wish Lists

One of the best ways to save money is by avoiding impulse buys. Keep a shopping wish list on hand and try not to stray from it. For example, if you notice a particular gap in your wardrobe, jot it down in your notes app and focus on shopping for the things on your wish list rather than just aimlessly shopping. You can also make wish lists directly on most online retailer’s websites in order to keep tabs on your most coveted pieces.

Pay With A Credit Card

You have to be careful with this one, as it can be all too easy to slip into debt, but simply paying with your credit card instead of debit or cash (only spending the amount you would on debit or cash, anyway) can earn you points and cashback (depending on your plan), but it also allows you to shop in a secure way.

Sign-Up For Emails

As much as no one likes receiving too many branded emails in their inbox, you never know when that one email with a coupon code or information on a limited-time sale will come in. It’s definitely worth signing up for your favourite brand’s email subscriptions! Fun fact: In our weekly newsletter, we always include a round-up of 20 sales happening at the moment. 😉

Join Rewards Programs

Almost every brand you shop at likely has some kind of rewards program at this point. Be sure to join the reward programs from your favourite brands to get all kinds of perks. Sephora, for example, offers a point-based rewards program, where you can earn points to get free products or money off – plus get access to exclusive discounts during sale times.

Know The Return Policy

We’ve all been guilty of buying an item, it not working out, and then it just ends up staying in the bag past the literal point of no return. Before buying anything, make sure to know the return policy, and actually return within the return window if it doesn’t end up working out! Otherwise, you might as well just throw out your money.

Compare Prices

Shopping savvy is all about making informed shopping decisions. Before pulling the trigger on a specific item, do your research to ensure you’re getting the best price.

Use Coupons

Whether you’re shopping online or in person, never neglect the power of a coupon! Browse the internet, check your mail for flyers, and tune into your favourite influencers offering discount codes!

Do Your Own Quality Inspecting

When shopping in person, always do your own quality inspection. Check for any flaws, loose seams, or signs of a poorly made item. Follow @wangjenniferr on TikTok for tips on what to look for when checking garments for quality. When shopping online, be sure to perform your own little inspection when you receive it before pulling off any tags.

The Toronto shopping neighbourhood known for its upscale tenants has just welcomed an unlikely new neighbour, Urban Planet.

Bloor Street is notably home to a crowd of luxury retailers such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Chanel, and more. Although it also has more approachable residents like Aritzia, Roots, and Winners, to name a few, the street is well-known for its high-end occupants. Urban Planet, however, is known for its affordable fashion offerings.

The new Urban Planet location is taking over where Club Monaco once lived, in a picturesque, historical building, which features large columns and a small staircase leading up to its doors — an undeniable contrast to Urban Planet locations we’re used to visiting.

According to Retail Insider, a 2-year lease has been signed by YM Inc. (Urban Planet’s parent company), even though the sign outside the store says it’s a “pop-up.”

The store, which offers trendy, affordable apparel and accessories for men, women, and teens, is located at 157 Bloor Street West in Toronto and is open for the public to shop as of October 11th, 2024. It also features a section dedicated to Forever 21.

Opinions in the comments of Urban Planets Instagram post announcing its new location are divided. One comment states, “This brand does not match with the architectural elegance of the building,” another says, “Weird store to have in Yorkville…” While other comments seem to be excited about the new location sharing, “YESSSSS” and “EPICCCCCC.”

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s getting chilly out there. The leaves are changing, jackets are quickly becoming more of a necessity than an accessory, and those open-toe shoes? They’ve officially made their way to the back of the closet. In other words, it’s boot season! Around this is the time of year when we dig out all the boots we own—heeled, flat, ankle, knee-high—and, of course, shop for a new pair (or two) to keep things feeling ~ fresh ~. Not only are boots a practical choice as the temps drop, but they’re also a total outfit game-changer. A great pair of boots can take an outfit from 0 to 10 in an instant. And let’s face it, no fall wardrobe is complete without a new pair of “fall-approved” boots.

Makeup has come a long way over the years. The reputation that makeup is bad for your skin is changing as products advance with new, innovative technology. More brands are infusing skin-loving ingredients into their products in order to provide the cosmetic function of makeup while also serving the benefits of skincare. A makeup-skincare hybrid, if you will. Essentially, it’s makeup products that include ingredients traditionally found in skincare products, like hyaluronic acid, SPF, and various antioxidants. Whether you’re on the hunt for a concealer that will simultaneously cover and treat blemishes, or a lipstick that doubles as a hydrating serum – we’ve rounded up 8 makeup products that double as skincare.

French fashion, and/or Parisian fashion, refers to a particular style aesthetic that can often be described as effortlessly chic. On the streets of Paris, you can often spot Parisians wearing timeless classics, perfectly styled from head to toe with a casual undertone. A popular French uniform consists of straight-leg denim, a cashmere sweater, a boxy blazer, a black leather belt, loafers, and understated gold jewellery to tie it all together. The thing about achieving an effortless look is that it actually requires a certain amount of effort. But by gathering some style inspiration and shopping from the right brands, you too, can achieve French-girl status.

Shop from these 11 brands if you love French fashion!

Sézane

While shopping, you’ll find an array of wardrobe staples with a feminine flare, giving off major chic-décontracté vibes.

Wilfred

Wilfred by Aritzia isn’t a French brand, but it totally has the foundation to help bring the perfect Parisian wardrobe to life, thanks to its assortment of feminine silhouettes with an effortless appeal. We can totally picture this cardigan paired with these jeans, frolicking the streets of Paris.

Sandro

A post shared by Sandro Paris Officiel (@sandroparis)

Sandro’s recognizable aesthetic can be attributed to its founder and artistic director, Evelyne Chetrite. The brand began in 1984 with a single store and has since grown into the French fashion staple that it is today. Sando’s collections are designed with Chetrite’s vision of the masculine-feminine equation, creating that “cool girl” look the luxury brand is known for.

Ba&sh

Parisian brand Ba&sh was founded by two best friends who wanted to create their dream wardrobe, and we think it’s safe to say, mission accomplished! Inspired by everyday life, travel, art, film, and more, Ba&sh’s collections offer effortless staples with a foundation of “French sexiness, a confident femininity.”

Reformation

Although Reformation is not actually a French brand, it definitely offers clothing that fits the French theme. The brand provides effortless silhouettes with a slightly vintage tone that celebrates the feminine figure. All while using sustainable fashion practices. La perfection!

Uniqlo

A post shared by UNIQLO Canada (@uniqlocanada)

In terms of shopping for French fashion at Uniqlo, it’s all about what you’re buying. Uniqlo as a brand may not be what comes to mind when you think about Paris street style. However, its basics offer the quality and classic design that French locals are known for.

Balzac Paris

The mission-driven company provides elevated (and fun) wardrobe staples you can feel good about shopping, as sustainability is always at the forefront. Born in New York City, The Frankie Shop now has locations in New York and Paris and is carried in top luxury department stores across Europe. The brand’s aesthetic is described as “masculine, feminine,” with suiting as a focal point. The website features a quote by the French fashion icon Jane Birkin, stating, “My look is a cocktail. I’m not as nicely turned out as the French, but I don’t care like the English.” Which we feel, perfectly encapsulates The Frankie Shop.

Isabel Marant

Last but not least (for now) is Isabel Marant. The French-German designer founded her self-named brand in 1994 after designing clothes for herself and her friends! Now, she designs for the public, offering timeless luxury pieces with recognizable designs. Blending everything we love about French fashion. The brand can be described as effortless, edgy, timeless, and chic, with a hint of feminine boho.
