When it comes to shopping on budget, Walmart takes the cake. With Walmart’s competitive low prices and huge selection, it’s hard to resist shopping there. Walmart is the one-stop-shop for many with its seemingly endless list of departments including grocery, electronics, clothing, and toys, to name a few. We probably all shop at Walmart on the regular, so it’s about time to shop smart, and utilize these Walmart shopping secrets!
Have you ever been to Walmart and the thing you need happens to be cleared off the shelf? According to Best Life, shopping in the morning is an easy hack to help avoid the empty shelves and low stocked inventory. A lot of Walmart locations are open late or even 24 hours, but the staff tends to stock shelves during less busy hours, such as at night. So if you arrive bright and early, you’re more likely to be able to shop the freshly stocked shelves from the night before.
Be sure to check out Walmart’s online prices before shopping because sometimes items can be cheaper! If you find this price discrpency, but still want to shop in-store, Walmart will to match the online price so that you can get the best deal possible.
If you’re someone who isn’t a fan of grocery shopping in-store, Walmart has a service that allows you to grocery shop online and pick up in store, with no extra charge! You just need to have a minimum order of $50 and you’re all set. Simply just pick out the groceries you want out of Walmart’s assortment and just book a time to pick them up. For even more convenience use Walmart’s Mobile Check In to let the store know when you’re on your way so you’re groceries will be ready, waiting there for you!
Use coupons and stock up on coupon items to save yourself some money in the future. We suggest checking out the coupons offered on Walmart’s website before you go shopping.
If you’re not picky about brands and are looking to save a few bucks, keep your eyes peeled for Walmart’s generic label called Great Value. The retailer has a generic product for pretty much anything you can think of from food products and toiletries, to tissues and sandwich bags.
Although bakery items don’t have much of a difference in taste or texture the next day, Walmart actually offers discounts on these products, and can sometimes get priced at a dollar. So, if you want a chance to score a deal on baked goodies, browse through the bakery section before checking out.
When looking at Walmarts prices, there are some hints to whether or not you’re getting the best price they’re going to offer! According to The Krazy Coupon Lady, Walmart gives markdown indications in the price tag. If the price is ending in a 7, it is said to be the original price, with no markdown given — yet. If the price is ending in a 5, it’s possible that’s the first markdown given to that product, so you’re getting a deal but might want to wait around a little longer for the last markdown, which is said to be prices ending in a 1 or 0.
Even though Walmart offers grocery pick-up, the store also offers to deliver your groceries right to your doorstep! This is especially useful for those of us looking for the best deal on groceries but live nowhere near a Walmart store and don’t drive. If you haven’t shopped Walmart online yet, you’re eligible to get $10 off your first order! Just use code ‘Walmart10’ to save yourself $10.
Make the most out of your Walmart shopping trip, and download the company’s app. You can get notified of deals that you may not have known about previously and in-turn save on some cash. Even be the first to know about exclusive sales and discounts before anyone else.

What COVID-19 Might Mean For The Future Of Retail
Local Toronto Stores Are Now Offering Free Delivery In Response To Temporary Store Closures
Across the globe, stores and restaurants are closing and people are living in isolation. Life feels less like reality and more like a simulation a little bit every day.
But while times are gloom and the future is uncertain, it’s great to see the world banding together. Bright moments are happening across the globe. In Toronto, we’ve seen local institutions pivot their businesses to provide people with hand sanitizer and grocery stores putting those most at-risk first. And across the beauty, fashion, and retail industries, we’re seeing conglomerates step up their efforts to help stop the spread of Coronavirus, too.
Luxury conglomerate LVMH was the first on the fashion and beauty front to offer up its support in helping to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. On March 15, the company announced that it would turn its perfumes and cosmetics business into a hand sanitizer manufacturer. LVMH has committed to deliver the hand sanitizer it creates free of charge to French health authorities for “as long as necessary” to help “enable a greater number of people to continue to take the right action to protect themselves from the spread of the virus.”
Under the L’Oréal beauty brand, La Roche-Posay said it would provide hand sanitizer to institutions in Europe that need it the most such as main partnering pharmacies, hospitals, and nursing homes. Garnier, also under the L’Oréal beauty brand, will distribute hand sanitizer to its European clients’ food distribution channels. In a statement to WWD, L’Oréal Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jean-Paul Agon said, “Through these gestures, L’Oréal wishes to express its appreciation, support and solidarity with all those who mobilize with extraordinary courage and abnegation to fight against this pandemic.”
Another of the retailers donating to COVID-19 prevention efforts is Los Angeles Apparel. In a statement made through Instagram, the company’s controversial owner Dov Charney (formerly of American Apparel) offered help to the municipal, state, and federal agencies. “Our experienced workforce and management team of over 450 people are ready and able to produce masks or medical products for any government agency,” Charney said.
Fast fashion behemoth Inditex — the owner of Zara, Massimo Dutti, and more — is also lending its workforce in the battle to prevent COVID-19’s spread. As one of the retailers donating to COVID-19 prevention efforts, the company’s factories and logistics teams will help the Spanish government by donating masks for patients and medical workers, stating to Vogue, that it “will make a delivery at least once a week of materials we purchase directly.” As of now, the company has donated 10,000 protective face masks and expects to have 300,000 surgical masks ready by March 21.
In a statement on Instagram, Moncler’s Chairman and CEO Remo Ruffini announced that the company would donate €10 million towards the construction of a hospital in Milan with 400 extensive care units. He said, “Milan is a city that has given us all an extraordinary time. We cannot and must not abandon it. It is everyone’s duty to give back to the city that has given us so much.”
Earlier in the month, Giorgio Armani donated €1.25 million to a number of Italian hospitals and institutions. According to WWD, “The Luigi Sacco and San Raffaele hospitals and the Istituto dei Tumori in Milan as well as the Istituto Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome will benefit from the donation. The amount will additionally support the activities of Protezione Civile, the country’s civil defense.”
As reported by South China Morning Post, Kering — the luxury conglomerate that owns Gucci, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, and more — has donated 7.5 million yuan to the Red Cross Society Of China.
Versace’s Chief Creative Office Donatella Versace and her daughter Allegra Versace Beck have donated €200,000 to the San Raffaele hospital in Milan. In a statement, Versace said, “Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by this disease and to all the doctors and medical staff who have been working heroically non-stop in the past weeks in the effort to take care of our loved ones.” The company has also donated 1 million yuan to The Chinese Red Cross Foundation.
According to Business Insider, Prada co-CEOs Muiccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, as well as Chairman Carlo Mazzi, have donated two resuscitation and complete intensive care units to hospitals in Milan.
One of the big retailers donating to COVID-19 prevention efforts is Walmart. On March 17, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation announced a pledge of $25 million to help organizations on the front lines in fighting COVID-19. The large sum will be split between food banks and meal programs in America, as well as global efforts in preventing, identifying, and managing the outbreak.

Despite being a go-to for groceries and all things bulk, it seems like we, as shoppers, sometimes overlook the power of Costco.
The retail giant has quietly championed the fashion space, stepped up its beauty game, and has even carved out a position in travel.
According to retail analyst Amar Singh, who spoke with Retail Insider, Costco has bumped Walmart out of its spot on the retail chain and now comes second after Loblaws as Canada’s top retailers. The positioning now sets Costco ahead of grocers like Metro and Sobeys, as well.
Amar Singh attributes the bulk retailer’s success to its growing grocery presence and ability to still delivering “on its true value hunt experience which Canadians love.”
Costco is really a competitor. And what we forecast is that it is going to widen its gap to Walmart in terms of revenue. It’s going to dwarf Walmart over the next five years as well.”
Amar Singh, senior analyst on retail and ecommerce for Canada with Kantar
Another reason for why Costco is Canada’s second largest retailer is its positioning strategy, which has been very calculated. Costco has focused on urban centres and the suburbs, making it easily accessible to most Canadians. “On a per capita basis, Costco has a higher penetration in Canada versus the U.S.,” Singh says.
Canadians are somewhat more adventurous than other shoppers because we’re open to non-traditional brands. We’re opening to experimenting and “are not married to brands” so long as we’re still getting good quality and benefits from products we seek.
While Costco is no stranger to brands, with its Kirkland brand, it’s able to make good quality product with low margins, and its private label has become a big money maker.
Which is no surprise. The membership allows Costco to lower its margins on other items so that they can give value back to its members. Its gas stations and auto services also play a role in Costco’s attraction.
That’s an increase of 7% from the same period last year. Its net sales for the fiscal year were $149.35 billion, which was also a growth from its last fiscal year.
With sales on the rise, you can bet that we’ll continue to see more Costco locations and more value-driven, high-quality products in-stores — a win for Canadian Costco members!

If you’re in need of some groceries, make your next food run less of a chore! These grocery stores are all looking to elevate your shopping experience, and bring more value to the inevitable task we all have to do at least once a week. Whether it’s fast check-out technology, zero waste, or having your vegetables pre-cut for you, these retailers are stepping up their game in more ways than one. Grab your cart, and get shopping because purchasing food has never been so cool or fun!
With its state of the art technology, the Stockyards Walmart location in Toronto is really putting the super in Supercentre. Recently launched as a prototype for more innovative stores, this Walmart location is integrating e-commerce into the checkout process to bring you new fast lane technology. What this means is that customers simply download the app, scan items as they go, and then pay directly with their phone. No waiting in checkout lines! Literally just grab and go.
We hear the words diversity and multicultural a lot these days, but they aren’t necessarily reflected in many grocery store offerings, that is until Nations grocery store opened. The grocery retailer focuses on offering multicultural produce and a wide assortment of prepared foods from all across the world. Whether it’s Eastern or Western, Nations’ focus is to bring you food that is diverse, fresh, and affordable.
As the name implies, Unboxed Market is Toronto’s first zero waste grocery store. You literally won’t find any single use plastic or plastic bags here, only recyclable paper packaging. Customers are encouraged to bring their own mugs and containers to put produce or other items in. Despite being waste free, there is no shortage of departments as this smaller-than-most grocery store is a one-stop-shop. Along with the usual produce, deli, and dry good offerings, you can even find lotion and shampoo in dispensers that are ready to be put into your own reusable containers.
Pusateri’s is calling all vegetarians and vegetable lovers! Not only is it one of the most beautiful grocery stores in Toronto, but the high-end food retailer also has its own vegetable butcher. Similar to a regular butcher, this person will chop and prep all of your vegetables right before your eyes or while you shop. Unlike packaged and chopped veggies, you know these will be incredibly fresh, not to mention how much of a time saver it is.
If you’re looking for a specialty grocery store in the European-Italian sense, then Lady York has got you covered. Having opened in 1959, Lady York has a lot of experience in purveying specialty foods, gourmet items, and high quality produce & deli products. The family-owned business has been operating for 55 years so they must be doing something right because let’s be real: have you ever met a traditional Italian who made mundane food? Point taken.
Farm Boy is the perfect grocery store for people who love markets! The folks behind this mega successful store have taken the fresh market approach and turned it into a retail chain. Everyday, buyers go out and source produce and meat from local markets, which they bring back to the stores. The end result are shelves filled with the freshest ingredients, all in one place!
We’re pretty sure all of us would like to buy organic, the only problem being the cost. That’s where Organic Garage comes in, with its organic, low-cost model. Along with a fun and playful approach to grocery shopping, the stores are filled with murals and hopscotch and it even employs smart buying practices that allow for organic food to be priced for less. You won’t ever have to pay an arm and a leg to shop healthy again.

Canada can’t get enough of its variety stores. The country is teeming with old and new retailers focusing on affordable goods. From Japanese-inspired MINISO and Oomomo, to the Korean-inspired Mumuso, and of course, Canada’s own beloved dollar store, Dollarama, we have our pick of the crop to shop.
And now, Canada is getting the Dutch’s version of a value-based retailer.
Known for its high-quality design and competitive pricing, the popular European retailer sells household goods, beauty products, clothing, and more. A quick peek at HEMA’s website reveals items priced as low as €1, which is equivalent to about $1.50 Canadian.
But instead of diving head first into Canada and taking missteps — like some retailers have done in the past — HEMA Amsterdam has partnered with Walmart to open shops-in-stores and standalone stores in larger Walmarts, similar to a partnership Walmart has with MINISO. According to a press release, the first stores will open this year, although, no locations have been revealed yet.
Facebook/HEMA
If one thing’s for certain, it’s that Canadians love a great deal, so it would be no surprise if Canadians loved HEMA too.
In addition, HEMA Amsterdam will be launching into the United States via Walmart’s online store, which will test the markets with housewares to start.
There aren’t any updates on whether or not Canada will receive HEMA Amsterdam’s full range of offerings, but we will keep you updated as more news arises. Until then, take a peek at all the hype behind HEMA below.

Your makeup routine doesn’t have to break the bank!
While there are some weeks where, sure, the total worth of cosmetics on my face seeps well into the hundreds, there are also weeks when finances may be a little tighter than usual, and I’m not able to restock on my usual high-end products. But this doesn’t mean that the quality of my makeup application completely diminishes!
My experience working in beauty PR and as a certified makeup artist has led me to confirm that a lot of what you pay for when purchasing cosmetics is the branding! The price of a product doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality of the product or tool, and many drugstore products are made by the same manufacturers of high-end beauty products.
Fenty broke the internet when Rihanna released 40-shades range of foundation. I couldn’t wait to support her mission to diversify the beauty game, but I have to tip my hat off to Maybelline. Out of all the drugstore brands, I can say they’ve always had one of the widest range of shades in the drugstore market.
I’m extremely picky with my foundation, and when I’m trying to save, the Maybelline SuperStay Full Coverage Foundation is the only drugstore foundation that I feel comfortable running in and out of Shoppers to grab in a hurry. This is a fantastic dupe in terms of coverage, colour, and longevity. And it’ll save you a whole lot of cash, too!
If you’re a fan of the seasoned MAC Prolong Wear Concealer, then you’ll love the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer while saving 20 bucks! The liquid-to-creamy concealer provides great buildable coverage and a luminous finish. I like using this to brighten my under eye area. Like the Prolong Wear, it lasts for hours without creasing!
This isn’t the last time you’ll see Maybelline on this list! I told you, it’s definitely one of my favourite drugstore brands. I’m absolutely in love with one of their newest products: SuperStay Full Coverage Powder Foundation.
For years, I was willing to splurge the $60 on BECCA’s Perfect Skin Mineral Powder because of how difficult it was to find a shade deep enough to use as a contour for myself. It was a little costly considering I was using such minimal product on my face to fake some defined cheekbones. Then all of a sudden — poof! BECCA pulled my beloved product from its roster. Maybelline’s new launch of SuperStay Full Coverage Powder comes just as I needed to re-up, and it’s available in an extensive range of shades. The full coverage foundation has an awesome powder-to-creamy formula that is super blendable with a matte finish. Thanks, Maybelline!
When it comes to finishing touches, highlight is almost a necessity to any makeup obsessed doll! Sometimes its use is as minimal as using it for the teardrops of your eyes or the tip of your nose — why not save $39 on this step if you can?! I found the Wet ‘N Wild Highlighting Powder to be an exceptional dupe to the BECCA highlighter. You can easily get that blinding shine that BECCA’s offers by wetting or spritzing your brush before dabbing the powder, and VOILA —shine bright, girl.
I’ll be honest… Typically, you’ll find me with false lashes on — either lash strips or extensions. So, mascara is one product where I opt for a cheaper alternative quite regularly. I’ve been using the iconic Maybelline Great Lash since my high school days, and it’s yet to disappoint! In fact, it only seems to upgrade with new additions to its collection. I find that when I reach for the Blackest Black Maybelline Great Lash, I can’t even tell the difference between using a high-end mascara like MAC’s In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash. If you’re a lash addict like myself, save the additional $25 for your next refill!
A classic red lip is a staple beauty accessory, and I’ve sworn by MAC Ruby Woo for nearly a decade — it’s definitely my most recommended red lipstick! There’s something about a bold, matte, blue-toned, red lip that just gives me life. Maybe it’s the fact that the blue-base makes my smile extra pearly white, or that a red lip compliments nearly any outfit.
I rarely stray away from MAC Ruby Woo but I was actually pleasantly surprised with another of Maybelline products: SuperStay Matte Ink liquid lipstick. This dupe blesses you with a flawless matte and intense colour at half the cost! I rarely need to reapply with this lippie as it inks your lip for up to 16 hours.
