If working out and getting fit is on your “to do” list this summer, you’re going to love this round-up. Work out classes have become a huge trend, but you shouldn’t have to spend a big chunk of your paycheque to reach your fitness goals.
Gym memberships don’t come cheap, and passes for speciality studios like yoga or cycling can burn an even bigger hole in your pocket.
If you’re looking to get fit without the price tag, here are 6 ways to work out for free this year.
- Participate in Free Online Fitness Challenges
A quick Google search will show you tons of free fitness challenges to take on this year. Popsugar Fitness has 30-day challenges for everything from your glutes to your abs, Buzzfeed offers a killer 14-day challenge you can do anywhere, and Thrillist has a 30-day gym-free fitness challenge, working different body parts each day. These challenges give you to work towards, so choose the one(s) that’s right for you!
- Download an App
If you don’t have the budget for a trainer but crave structure in your workouts, download an app. Apps like Kineticoach, which creates custom, time-based workouts for you, or Keelo, for strength and high-intensity training workouts, are awesome ways to work out for free. Having specific, measurable goals are key to keeping you motivated, so daily workouts you can follow alongside an in-app trainer are going to help you succeed.
- Go for a Hike
Think outside the box when it comes to your workouts this year. Instead of always running on the treadmill or around your neighbourhood, find a hiking trail and get moving. If you really want to challenge yourself, fill up a hiking backpack and make sure you’re hiking uphill for the majority of your workout.
- Use Youtube
Youtube is stocked with workout videos led by professional trainers. Whether you want to get zen with a yoga class, get your heart rate up with cardio, or strengthen and tone with free weights, use Youtube for your at-home and outdoor workouts!
- Join a Running Club
Exercising is easier in numbers, so if you need a boost of motivation, join a free running club to keep you on track. There are lots of running clubs offered all around Toronto, from LuluLemon to Nike Run Club to Black Lungs Toronto. You’ll get to run alongside like-minded individuals who will keep you accountable and on your toes. Prepare to have some fun!
- Use Your Bodyweight
You don’t need machines and equipment to get a good workout. Using your bodyweight for short, high-intensity workouts is one of the best ways to lose weight and get fit fast. Bodyweight exercises can be done in your living room or yard, or wherever you have space. Check out an app like 500 Bodyweight Challenge, which uses unique natural bodyweight exercises to get you moving.
