Do Dollar Store Lipsticks Actually Compare To High End Lipsticks?
We all know there are some beauty staples worth investing in and for me, that has always been high-quality concealer and foundation. As someone that’s suffered with acne for a lot of their life, these two items are integral to my beauty regimen. I also firmly stand behind purchasing high-quality liquid eyeliner and eyeshadow because I find the cheaper options always seem to fall a little short.
But what are the items that we can get away with spending a little bit less money on?
Although this will be different for everybody, it’s a thought that always intrigues me. On my search for an answer, I tested how a lipstick from the dollar store held up for a full day of running around, versus a lipstick from Sephora.
Check out my findings below on if a dollar store lipstick compares to a high end option!
There are a few shade options available at the dollar store, but most of them are a light pink which isn’t really a good look for me, so I went with the dark wine.
Initially this lipstick went on pretty smooth, but I found it hard to apply right in my cupids bow due to the shape of the stick (it’s a little wide when it comes to a point).
So although I felt a little sloppy, there wasn’t too much to complain about! The above picture is of when I first applied the lipstick, and you can kind of see the struggle to get it tight into the cupids bow.
Throughout The Day:
Unfortunately this lipstick doesn’t have the longest wearing power, as come lunchtime it had faded around the middle of the mouth quite a bit. However, if you have the time to re-apply throughout the day, then this isn’t too big of a problem.
Also, I’d recommend pairing it with a lip balm as well, since it isn’t very moisturizing and it dried into the cracks in my lips.
The depth of colour that this provided isn’t necessarily something that I’d usually buy, but for $1.50, it’s an excellent option. I’d stick to wearing this for shorter commitments, and maybe to an event in the evening with low light (incase it starts to fade in the middle or bleed a little.)
It’s a great option for a night out with your girlfriends, but probably not for dinner, or a long day with lots of running around. Also, the packaging of the lipstick is very flimsy; the actual lipstick is quite loose, and jiggles when you apply it.
Right off the bat, I loved the shade of this lipstick, and the buildability; you can put multiple layers on to really build out the look you’re searching for. The first coat looks a little more on the orange side, but as you add more, the red tones really come out.
The application process was smooth and I was able to get into every corner of my lips. Pro tip; I’m also wearing it on my cheeks as blush!
A good quality lipstick has great spreadability, and can be used on more places than just your lips. I’ve had makeup artists do a full smokey eye using lipstick shades, so don’t be afraid to play around.
Throughout The Day:
The Lise Watier really held up as the day went on! The above is a picture of me at around 3pm, with NO re-application needed. I had a super busy day including lunch and a few coffee meetings and it kept my lips very moist. I even got quite a few compliments throughout the day, too!
If you’re looking to purchase a lipstick in a higher price range, this is a great buy. The depth of colour was beautiful, and it kept my lips moisturized all day long which is something that’s hard to find in a lipstick.
The case is also very sleek and strong, which if you’re going to keep it in your purse is VERY important because we all know that a lipstick explosion in your bag is a total day ruiner. It will hold up for a full day in the office full of meetings, and even last through after work drinks.
