If you’ve been paying attention to the food scene in the GTA you may have started to notice the prevalence and the quality of Filipino Cuisine. Access to Filipino food is about to reach the masses as our friends at Retail-Insider are reporting that California-based Filipino grocery chain Seafood City is planning a major expansion across Canada in conjunction with fast food powerhouse Jollibee.
If you haven’t heard of Seafood City there are already a few locations in the GTA and is an Asian food market that caters mostly to Filipino customers. The chain of stores includes a full-service supermarket, fresh seafood, meat and produce departments, groceries with dry goods. In Canada Seafood City also manages a group on in-store restaurants that include: Grill City, Noodle Street, CrispyTown and Jollibee.
According to our friends at Retail-Insider Seafood City is developing stores in Winnipeg with plans to have the stores ready in 2019. Additionally, it is reported that the company is planning to open 100 locations in Canada in the next five years. It’s a very ambitious plan, however with a huge Filipino community ( 867,000 + as of 2016 census) and a growing appreciation for Filipino cuisine makes Seafood City one of the most interesting grocery chains to watch.
