Just when you thought it all couldn’t get any worse, we get the news that beloved Canadian shoe retailer ALDO is reportedly planning on closing almost half of its Canadian stores.
This news comes after it was revealed that the shoe and accessory retailer filed for creditor protection back in May. In a release, the company said, “Like many other fashion retailers, we have been operating in a challenging retail environment over the last several years. Two years ago, we designed and began executing a comprehensive plan to restructure the business. We were making strong progress, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has put too much pressure on our business.”
The retailer also explained that they’re unable to predict how long the restructuring process will take but “our goal is to emerge from these proceedings as quickly as possible. However, the process can take several months.”

Even before the major struggle that continues to be COVID-19, many brands and retailers were experiencing hardship in the retail world. One brand that is, unfortunately, having a rough go is Canadian footwear and accessories brand ALDO.
“ALDO is one of the world’s leading fashion footwear and accessory brands with a solid track record of growth and profitability for almost half a century. It is no secret that the retail industry has experienced rapid and significant change over the last several years. We were making strong progress with the transformation of our business to tackle these challenges; however, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has put too much pressure on our business and our cash flows. After conducting an exhaustive review of strategic alternatives, we determined that filing under CCAA and related proceedings is in ALDO’s best interest to preserve the Company for the long term and survive through this challenging period,” says David Bensadoun, Chief Executive Officer of the Company, in a release.
While ALDO sold just over $1.2 billion worth of merchandise in the past 12 months up until February, it ended up losing money — $74.8 million at Canadian stores, and about $52.8 million in the U.S.
However, now that non-essential businesses are allowed to reopen soon in Ontario, ALDO locations that have street entrances will be opening their doors in accordance with public health regulations. With that being said, the brand’s filings reveal that not all of its 850 North American stores will reopen and will be closed for good.
Have an ALDO gift card that you’re looking to use? CBC also reports that the brand is asking courts for permission to honour customer gift cards during the restructuring process.

It might often feel like Canadian fashion brands don’t quite measure up to their American and European counterparts, but the truth is, that just isn’t the case. Canada is home to some incredible talent, especially when it comes to fashion. Some of the world’s most favourite brands were born right here on Canadian soil, including Aritzia, Jason Wu, Sentaler, and more.
From casual everyday wear and accessories, to red-carpet approved gowns, celebrities and models alike can’t seem to get enough of our homegrown talent. We’re talking about everyone from Meghan Markle, Michelle Obama, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Camilla Cabello, and many many more.
Raised in Toronto but designed in New York City, the Tanya Taylor brand embodies youthful spirit with its artful use of colour, bold prints, and simple feminine silhouettes. The pieces are sophisticated yet fun, and have been spotted on a slew of stars including Reese Witherspoon, Lena Dunham, Sarah Hyland, Tracee Ellis Ross, Michelle Obama, and Beyoncé.
Whether you knew it or not, Pink Tartan actually started in Toronto in 2002 and creator Kimberley Newport-Mimran has been providing effortless simplicity to its garments ever since. Over time the brand has garnered a following by celebrities like Jenny McCarthy, fashion icon Kim Cattrall, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Suits star Sarah Rafferty, and others. Clearly whatever Pink Tartan has been doing has been working, as more and more celebs are repeatedly wearing the brand at red carpet events.
Founded in 2008, Jenny Bird is known for its bold, modern designs that are carried in leading fashion retailers worldwide. The Toronto-based brand’s playful designs have garnered international attention from A-listers such as model Ashley Graham, former first lady Michelle Obama, tennis-star Bianca Andreescu, comedian Chelsea Handler, legendary actress Jane Fonda, reality TV star and makeup guru Kylie Jenner, singing queen P!nk, runway icon Hailey Bieber, This is Us actress Mandy Moore, and the one-and-only Celine Dion, just to name a few.
Toronto-based SENTALER, which is known for its luxury outwear, has become not only a favourite of Canadians, but also the Royal Family. Made with ethically sourced, sustainable, and cruelty-free fabrics and furs, SENTALER is an internationally recognized brand thanks to support from the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, who has appeared publicly on multiple occasions in the brand’s Long Wide Collar Wrap Coat with Signature Ribbed Cuffs.
Known for its elevated and quality-crafted basics, Vancouver-born Aritzia is where most shoppers go to stock up on well-made coats, great jeans, tailored trousers, layering essentials, and cozy knits. And it’s not just Canadians that can’t get enough of the brand, but celebs, too, including Riverdale actress Camila Mendes, the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, model Haley Bieber, fashion icon Cindy Crawford, social media queen Kylie Jenner, and more.
Even some of the biggest names in the industry can’t get enough of our beloved homegrown footwear brand, Aldo. Singer Camila Cabello recently wore Aldo heels at the MTV Video Music Awards, Pretty Little Liars Actress Lucy Hale donned a pair of Aldo heels at New York Fashion Week, and country music star Kacey Musgraves was spotted in the Canadian brand at the Country Music Hall of Fame this summer. But let’s not forget about the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, who opted for Aldo heels at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships this year.
Since launching in 2004 with blazers and jackets, Smythe has evolved into a collection of everyday wardrobe essentials that have gained a cult-status following. The Canadian brand’s list of celeb supports includes Bella Hadid, Nicole Scherzinger, Kate Beckinsale, Molly Sims, Alessandra Ambrosio, and even Miley Cyrus.
While Jason Wu is now based in the U.S., the designer was born in Vancouver, which is where he first learned to sew. Are Big Baller Shoe Brands Worth It?
Fall is officially here and as much as much as we love the small bag trend, they’re just impractical. September seems to bring with it the return of responsibility, whether it be school or work so your days spent relaxing by the beach are unfortunately over. No longer are your essentials just your phone and a lipstick so it’s time to get your hands on a fall work bag that will hold more than just a few items! With that being said, we firmly believe you shouldn’t have to make any style sacrifices to be practical. We’ve got you covered with a list of great bags for fall that will hold all your essentials!
Sustainable shopping is one of those trends that honestly shouldn’t be a trend — it should be commonplace, but here we are. So many retailers and brands have been implementing sustainability into their practices and it’s about damn time. If you’re looking to shop more sustainably but aren’t willing to sacrifice style, ALDO is here with its new sustainable shoe collection.
“The launch of the RPPL is a pivotal step towards our on-going journey and commitment towards a more sustainable future. We’re thrilled to have begun this partnership with the team at BLOOM, a move that has allowed us to explore new materials and methods of production that will have meaningful benefits on our customers, allowing them to choose good, while helping our planet.” said Daianara Grullon Amalfitano, SVP of ALDO, in a release.
Algae is a carbon neutral raw material that’s grown without any labour, irrigation, pesticides, or fertilizers and each RPPL shoe helps clean 35 litres of fresh water.

“ALGIX and BLOOM are super excited to be collaborating with ALDO, such an innovating and exciting brand that is using our BLOOM Foam sustainable material to make a major positive impact on our environment. With every RPPL shoe, together we will transform air and water pollution into sustainable footwear the consumer will be proud to wear! Together we have the power to restore our environment leaving tomorrow better than today.” said Mike Van Drunen, Co-Founder of BLOOM, innovators of BLOOM Foam technology, in a release.

Does Going Zero Waste Mean Buying More Stuff?
Trends come and go, any person who knows anything about the fashion life cycle is aware of this. Every season there’s a new “it” bag, and often times by next season, it’ll be out of style and on the shelves of every discount retailer and consignment store. This isn’t always the case as sometimes there are exceptions for certain pieces and the Hermès Birkin Bag is one of them. However, with a price point between $11,900 and $300,000, it’s the kind of accessory that most folks will never get their stylish hands on. If you’re searching for a Birkin Bag but can’t bear to shell out that kind of money, perhaps one of these affordable alternatives would suit you and your budget.
If spending over $10,000 on a purse is too daunting for your wallet, then this Dasein handbag that rings in at $58 might sound a lot better. Available in a variety of colours, this is a great alternative to the classic Birkin as it has all the classic hardware, but is a fraction of the price. If you’re in the market for a new work bag, this baby is a great option as it can even hold your laptop!
View this post on Instagram
Even though this Tory Burch bag is pricy, you have to admit it’s a steal compared to the price of a Birkin. The Lee Radziwell bag is a great option, as it’s still got that luxury vibe that’s synonymous of a Birkin Bag, but it’ll last longer than a fast fashion alternative.
Instagram/@amebeverly
If you’re bored of bags in colours like black, beige, and cream, ALDO’s Pauviel Bag is sure to liven things up. A gorgeous Birkin alternative but in fun leopard print, this is a great statement bag to wear that will still encompass those #BossLady vibes you’re after.
Crazy about the mini bag trend? This sparkly Knotty bag is not only super cute, but it’s a great dupe for the mini Birkins that have been all over Instagram these days. We love that this bag comes in a bunch of different colours so you can have one to match every outfit, kind of like how Victoria Beckham seems to have one Birkin for every look!
Say hello to your new everyday go-to bag. This satchel from mall fave Le Chateau will ensure every outfit looks polished and pulled together, as it’s professional and super stylish. What we love about this option is how roomy it is — it has two compartments that can hold all your bits and pieces that you’ll need throughout the day.
