Makeup-Tok is one of our favourites amongst the unofficial TikTok subgenres. The inevitable trial and error involved in searching for great makeup products are no longer left to chance. Thanks to the makeup gurus of TikTok giving us insight on the products we need to get our hands on and also, the products to stray away from.
Drugstore makeup is nothing like what it used to be. It’s way better! You can basically find any makeup product you could ever want, easily accessible at your local drugstore. Some even favoured over high-end makeup products. We did some digging (or scrolling) through TikTok, on the hunt for some makeup recommendations and certain drugstore makeup products kept popping up over and over, which means they must be worth a try!
@bexcxmpbell @elfcosmetics ♬ Mount Everest – Labrinth
If you’re a fan of drugstore makeup tutorials, you’ve probably come across Elf’s Poreless Putty Primer. It’s definitely a crowd favourite on TikTok. Popular for its pore-blurring effects and smooth texture. If you’re lucky enough to find this product in stock at the drugstore it retails for about $12, which is a steal compared to other comparable high-end primers!

The secret to full, yet natural-looking brows is the NYX Lift & Snatch! Brow Pen retailing for $15. The flexible micro-brush tip on the pen allows you to adjust the pressure for thicker or thinner lines, making it look like real brow hairs! We can see why this product is a cult fav on TikTok.

L’Oreal’s Colour Riche Lipstick, specifically in the shade 173 AKA Nu Impertinent, has gone viral on TikTok. We were recently invited to check out Formula Fig, a game-changing facial bar that already has 3 locations in Vancouver and has just opened its doors to the public in Toronto, located at 50 Ossington Avenue.
If you’re not familiar with Formula Fig, it is an experience-led, science-forward facial bar (AKA, Fig Bar), founded by Jessica Walsh and Anita Chan, offering a menu of facial treatments, neuromodulators, and IV injections. As well as tons of high-quality skincare products to shop for!

As soon as you approach its storefront, you’re greeted with a forest (pun intended) of green tiles and foliage, making it impossible to miss on the street of Ossington! Once you step foot inside you’ll realize it’s like no other facial bar you’ve ever been to—in the absolute best way possible.
You’re instantly transported into the London Tube, which this Fig Bar’s design was inspired by, and no detail was overlooked! It even has the same tiles used in the London subway station! Not only are you greeted with an aesthetically pleasing storefront filled with delicious hues of green, you instantly spot sight of its wide selection of carefully curated skincare products, some of which will be used on you during your facial. That way, you can take the facial home with you, in a way!

Once you go in for your facial, you enter a pod that appears to go on forever, thanks to its structure and mirrors. Giving the illusion of being in an underground subway station.
Making it super easy to pop in and take care of your skin on the regular! All of its facials have no downtime, so you can even go in on your lunch break and be on your way with glowy, beautiful skin!

One of our favourite facials offered at Formula Fig is the “All In” facial, giving you a little bit of everything, making it the perfect go-to for first-timers trying the bar out. Our favourite part? The membership option!
With the membership, you receive a monthly facial along with other perks, like 10% off all products.

After your relaxing, skin-enriching facial is complete, Formula Fig has the best post-facial selfie spot that is totally Instagram-worthy. Its fig-inspired washroom! Its pink and red hues along with its circular architecture totally remind us of what the inside of a fig would be like, if the inside of a fig were a washroom, that is. The circle mirror with text that says “Give a fig about your skin.”, with a dried flower bouquet on the counter, tied in with pink accents and flattering warm lighting makes it hard to resist taking a mirror selfie with your newly glowing skin.
If you’re looking to stray away from the average facial for something way cooler, you have to check out this Fig Bar!

Another beloved beauty brand is closing all retail locations in Canada, due to the pandemic.
Innisfree is the label that has recently fallen victim to ongoing COVID-19 challenges. The beauty brand is a hugely popular Korean cosmetics and skincare company that offers innovative clay masks, Green Tea Seed Cream, cleansing oils, and so much more.
Operation closures were announced on Innisfree Canada’s Instagram Stories which stated, “When we opened the first Innisfree store in Canada two years ago, our goal was to bring the best and latest K-beauty products to our customers and make them accessible to all. While our commitment to quality and serving our community remains the same, circumstances have changed over the past year and we anticipate that the health and safety risks of COVID-19 will be impacting our ability to deliver the right experience for the remainder of 2021 and beyond…”
Meanwhile the Eaton Centre and the Markville Mall storefronts have already shuttered.

If you’re a major fan of the beauty brand, or just interested in giving it a try, a handful of Innisfree products will still be available to shop for individuals who live in Canada at Sephora.

It’s quite a sad time for beauty lovers everywhere. The brand that brought us the infamous pressed highlighter is officially closing its doors. BECCA Cosmetics will be going out of business by September 2021.
The caption explained the main factor for the closure, “…At BECCA, an accumulation of challenges, together with the global impact of COVID-19, has sadly been more than our business can withstand…” The post left an overwhelming amount of fans shocked by this news. You’ll find the comment section flooded with heartfelt and loving comments by fellow makeup lovers.
Since the launch of the beauty line in 2001, it’s released a ton of products that are essentials in everyone’s makeup bag from lipsticks, to blush, to foundation.
While the news may come as a shock to outsiders, Amy Lucas, who is the Head of Commercial at Cosmetify explains that going out of business was definitely in the cards for BECCA Costmetics, “Our Q3 Beauty Index we revealed how each beauty brand performed in 2020 and BECCA Cosmetics sadly ranked in just 184th place. The brand saw a 18.1% decrease in search volume and had just a 0.05% engagement rate from its followers on Instagram. This was a big drop from our Q1 Beauty Index where it ranked in 73rd place.”

The classic beauty brand, Kiehl’s, is permanently closing eight of its 24 Canadian stores some time this year.
Kiehl’s first opened its flagship in New York City back in 1851 and has created a cult-like following since then. It was actually the first brand to list its ingredients on beauty products before it was even mandatory. Unfortunately, it’s now the latest notable brand to be impacted by the on-going pandemic.
The Kiehl’s stores that are shuttering are in the GTA, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonthon, London, and Halifax. The locations are at Toronto Yonge Street, Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, Masonville Place in London, Quartier Dix 30 in Montreal, Carrefour Laval, West Edmonton Mall, Halifax Shopping Centre, and Coquitlam Centre.
Plus, aside from its website, the it’ll continue to sell product at Sephora, Hudson’s Bay, Nordstrom, Holt Renfrew, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Any beauty addict knows that an appreciation for sheet masks or even facials can definitely put a dent in your wallet. And while we’re all about fresh skin year-round, a lot of these beauty buys cost a bit more than we’re willing to spend.
Fortunately, we’ve sourced affordable face masks that will keep your complexion clear, hydrated and healthy no matter your budget or concern.
If you’re looking for a few vanity heroes to stock up on before your slew of exciting plans this summer, be sure to check out these skin saviours.
As you know, we’re big fans of sheet masks – and for good reason. This particular line of natural lyocell fibre mask target a variety of skin concerns and types. They are also infused with a healthy variety of ingredients set to soothe skin, fight bacteria and strip the surface of any harmful dirt and debris. This product is also created with the contours of the face in mind, as it promises to hug your cheeks versus slipping off with any sudden movements. Be sure to pick up this pearl face mask to diminish irregularities, ultimately revealing brighter and more luminous skin.
Our lips are incredibly sensitive and receptive to the same negative effects that our skin receives from our daily grind. Luckily, Clinique created this overnight mask that will take care of the heavy lifting while we sleep. Come morning, our lips will feel hydrated, soft and plump with added moisture. Leave as is, or apply your favourite silk lipstick for an extra boost of brilliance.
The Body Shop has an army of skin-saving products and tools that help us look and feel our best, and this warming mask is no different. Infused with feel-good ginger, cinnamon oil and kaolin clay, your skin will be softer and smoother after first use. With continued use, prepare to see unclogged pores and a more refined finish.

The lovely purple coloured mask is not only pretty, but works wonders. Created to relax and restore your skin overnight to spark radiance for tomorrow. Composed of sleep inducing calming lemon verbena, valerian root, coconut, hydrating mullein leaf, and linseed decoction. All of these awesome ingredients are cold-pressed to enhance the benefits for your skin.
This powder face mask will infuse your skin with a much-needed dose of antioxidants. With matcha and green tea, your skin will look and feel more revitalized, with a fresher and more even texture come morning. And with a refreshing herbaceous aroma packed inside, you will instantly be transported to a signature spa with first contact.
This totally affordable cheerful mask delivers on its name! Feel beautiful with this nourishing and purifying mask that’s suitable for normal to combination skin. After first use your skin will feel squeaky clean, and with routine wear, you will see a more even texture for all under five dollars.
